I wonder if it'll have a notch?!

If we’re being anatomically correct, all post-G4 iMacs have always had a double chin not a cleft lip.

Beyond looking ugly and increasingly dated, its only apparent use was to display the Apple logo and for most users, somewhere to stick pointless Post It notes.
Every iMac I took apart had the logic board extend down through the chin. Clearly there was more of a purpose for it than to just show an Apple logo.

Like buying a bigger house, if the space is there you’ll always expand your stuff to fill it.

Fact is, the basic design of the current iMac hasn’t changed in almost a decade and it shows. This new generation model can’t arrive soon enough.

Macs are making a giant comeback.

Those 2015-2020 years were bleak.
I agree. And, now that my wife has retired, I'll have less money to afford the next great leap in Macs going forward. Timing is everything.

Along with new redesigned 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple also has major plans for other Macs in the Mac lineup. We've been hearing rumors about a redesigned iMac for more than a year now, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today shared a report that offers details on what to expect.

The new iMac models will feature slimmed down bezels around the screen, and the metal chin will be removed in favor of a design that's similar to the Pro Display XDR monitor that Apple released in 2019.

Rather than a curved rear design, the iMacs will feature a flat back, which is also a design that we're expecting to see with the upcoming MacBook Pro models, and prior rumors have described this as "iPad Pro design language." There will be two versions to replace the existing 21.5 and 27-inch models, and prior rumors have suggested that one of these models will measure in at 23 to 24 inches.

Like the new MacBook Pro models, the redesigned iMacs will adopt Apple silicon chips, and the revamped look will coincide with Apple's move to shift away from Intel's chips, giving the iMacs updated processors and a fresh design all at once.

Apple plans to equip the new iMacs with next-generation versions of the Apple silicon chips that will be faster and with more GPU power. Apple is testing Apple silicon chips with as many as 16 power cores and four efficiency cores, but higher-end desktop models could have as many as 32 high-performance cores. Apple is also working on improved GPU technology and is testing 16 and 32-core graphics components.

Apple is expected to release the new iMacs in 2021, but specific launch timelines aren't known at this time.

I recently did an interesting, although unscientific experiment. I have an Intel-based Core i7 Mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I opened the Chess app and started a new game with the computer playing against itself. Very quickly my computer got very hot and the fan was at full blast. I went to a local tech store and tried out one of the new M1 Apple Silicon notebooks. I again opened the Chess app and started a new game with the computer playing itself, and the computer remained cool the whole time! It appears that the M1 chip can do very compute-intensive work without running hot, an interesting observation!

I have the original 27" Retina iMac from 2014, I think. If this is what's next, I'm totally on board.

Although TBH, this iMac is probably the best computer I've ever owned, and it's *still* pretty responsive and more than usable. Only quibble at this point is the screen's getting some significant burn-in, even with items that are only on the screen for a short time. Alas.

Dont care about bezels. I just want VESA mounting and a GPU strong enough to keep up with Alienware.

“the iMacs will feature a flat back, which is also a design that we're expecting to see with the upcoming MacBook Pro models”

What is meant when they say he MBP will also have a ”flat back“ ? It really has no “back” and the form factor is already “flat”. No?

I believe they mean neither the iMac nor the MacBook Pro display will have backsides that are thinnest at the edges and then taper thicker towards the center.

To me, this means the iMac and MacBook displays will be of a uniform thickness. That will allow for the fitting of a True Depth camera to allow FaceID (the current iMac and MacBooks are too thin where the web cameras are to house a True Depth module and that thinness also affects the quality of the camera they can fit).

Cannot come fast enough. My 2011 27" is hanging on for dear life. Will buy in a heartbeat.
A man of culture, keeping his mac for several years before replacing it, making sustainability choices. I'm one myself :)
I just replaced my 2010 MBA with a MBP M1. Awesome speed! You'll like it a lot!!

So bleak. I am still running a 2015 Retina MBP 15", largely because Apple (or anyone else) haven't made a machine that I want to buy that is an improvement on what I have. Looks like it might be finally happening this year!!!

Sounds like curved surfaces are out and flat sides and backs are in!

Been a Mac user since 1992 and my late 2015 iMac is the best Mac I've ever owned. Now my wife's 2020 MacBook Air on the other hand … kinda disappointing.
