Why are people voting this positive???

It's the same as youtube. Some people vote based on the quality of the video itself and/or cinematography (high definition vs pixelated cell cam), while some people vote based off their opinion of the video's content (one star because I didn't like the video's message even though it looked great).

Anyway RIP York, even though I didn't know ya. Being on the financial board he seemed like one of those old money fiscally responsible types who probably had a hand in directing Apple to amass a large warchest instead of spending like a drunken sailor, thinking the good times would never end....even though for Apple they technically haven't (based on earnings).

I've chosen not to vote on this story, simply because you cannot vote on the value of a human life.

I'll happily give my condolences, but I won't vote ... even though I know it's a negative story due to the tragic circumstances surrounding it.

But...but...

You just SAID it's negative here in your post! If you didn't want to annonomously vote negative on the main page why would you vote negatively in a post with your name on it?

Terrible story, and I wish his family the best, but I really don't understand your post.

Very sad news. My heart goes out to the York family.

It's moments such as these in which it is important to stop and realize the fragility of life.

Are people negging this because it is bad he died or negging it because they think it is good he died? It seems like people really don't understand how the system is supposed to work if they are negging a story about a board member of Apple dying.

RIP.

(I think that a positive rating is meant that the individual reading the article likes it. Someone likes that this article is posted to inform of this important person's passing.)

I assume from people who think that remembering his life is a nice gesture from Macrumors.

yeah, that's the reason, I was tempted to vote positive for a split second as an appreciation for his life, but I of course dismissed it the next second. But it can happen for it to be misunderstood, in the first votes at least (I voted in 0-0), when the tone hasn't been set.

The voted system being there by mac rumors in the story was a tasteless decision to begin with. This is a mans life we are talking about, not voting necessary, you can comment of course.

Why are people voting this positive???

Perhaps they see death as a liberation or as a natural path towards eternal life. We cannot presume that our ordinary beliefs of death being a "bad" thing must be shared by all; this is a website visited by people from all over the world and with totally different faiths anyway.

p.s.: Not my case, though...I have never met the guy, but RIP, my condolences to his loved ones and thanks for the great work at Apple.

This is a sad thing. May he rest in peace. My best thoughts to his family and friends as they work through their grief.

Rating (35 Positives; 134 Negatives) Wow.
Yes, some just vote positive to piss off the emos here.

I still don't understand why some people are so over sensitive about someone they did not know personaly, did not know if he was a great or an awful person. Just because he had some relation with Apple Inc?

Many others die each day/hour/minute so get over it; it's just life.

I didn't vote because I wasn't sure what a positive or negative meant in this case.

Positive could mean a vote for Jerry's work and accomlishments in life.
Positive could mean a vote for the story getting attention
Positive could mean "Yay he's dead."

Negative could mean you're sad for his family's and Apple's loss
Negative could mean you think this article has no place on a mac rumor site
Negative could mean "Yay he's dead"

I'd take it easy on the positve and negative votes out there for this reason.

That being said, I don't know anything about the man, though I do wish his family all the best. My one experience with him is that his death has removed that monstrosity iTouch XL from the Apple front page, so at the very least he's done what I thought would be impossible this month and I wish him well in the afterlife at the very least for that.

I'd like to see the ratings go away completely, they are a waste of time and I'd say generally misleading.

They plummeted when he had the stroke. Logic (and good taste) suggests you are incorrect.

Calling a stock being down about 2% from its all time high a "plummet" is pretty silly.

I think this is, (as was mentioned on the previous thread,) that voting either way may be a misunderstanding of intention

In that instance, a thumbs up could have been to signify that they were glad he was ok at the time, whilst a down could signify sadness that he was ill.

In this instance, a thumbs up may well signify that relief that someone has ended their suffering and has passed onto a happier and calmer place. Cerebral Haemorrhage is not a nice thing to endure for any length of time. RIP.

Dont try to double guess meanings which possible weren't meant...

Chill out...
You got it! Obviously some are voting positive just as some people break out into rounds of loud applause when a funeral procession of someone highly respected goes by. Can't imagine anyone here is voting with bad intentions. - Obviously a sad loss to his family & to Apple.

Kudos to Apple for recognizing the solemnity of the event and dedicating their main page to the departed. May he rest in peace.
