Some are voting yes in support of the story.

Some are voting no because they're sad to see him pass away.

Both can be construed as positive.

Jerry speaking at the Apple Keynote (when Jobs returns) back in 1997

The Board starts discussing how they see Apple as needing to change, and give their viewpoint. The part with the board addressing the audiance begins at 14:15, with Jerry's first speaking at 15:32 in the video

A truly great man, and well spoken. He will be missed!!!

What a nice tribute on the home page.

Come on people, lets use our collective reality distorting powers to will him back to life!

Ho-ooope~ that's not funny (this isn't either, but I couldn't help thinking they should've let you check for a pulse)

RIP Jerry.

(Side note - there could be any reason people are voting positive, give 'em the benefit of the doubt)

Perhaps they see death as a liberation or as a natural path towards eternal life. We cannot presume that our ordinary beliefs of death being a "bad" thing must be shared by all; this is a website visited by people from all over the world and with totally different faiths anyway.

p.s.: Not my case, though...I have never met the guy, but RIP, my condolences to his loved ones and thanks for the great work at Apple.

I would write the same. Thanks BRLawyer! :)

maybe the people who are ranking this article positive are doing so because it has excellent grammar and stuff.

because thats the only reason i can think of for positively ranking an article about someone dying.

That or they are happy about Apple making it a front page item for their site despite the hype of the iPad.

First of all, what the heck does rating this thread even mean...? If I were to try to "rate" it I'd be unsure of whether to rate it as positive because I support the discussion of York's contributions and expressions of condolence, or negative because I don't like the news and think it's sad. I can see no sure definition there, unless the question is actually posed. It's not a poll, ferchissakes!

Reminds me of facebook, where my friend posted a funny story about a really bad thing that happened to him... I clicked "like" on the post, but then commented that I didn't mean that I liked what happened to him, but that I liked his way of telling the story, and that I "got it" and could relate to it. That's the problem with simple "up" or "down" ratings or polls. They don't get at anything too deep at all, yet people fight over them. That's the sad part.

STOP AND READ THIS!!!!

Page after page of people who posted without reading. Stop complaining about the ratings people gave. This has been explained again and again and again in this thread but nobody seems to be reading those explanations.

Don't post "the people who voted [whatever] should be ashamed." It's been hashed over and over in this thread. Read it.

2 positive ratings? interesting....

More like down right despicable.

I'm sure they were positive on celebrating his life, not on his death. Or like a digg for an important story.

People who would stop and read every page before posting would not post it. They're obviously clicking on this thread and writing their thoughts down without reading.

To summarize:
•*Positive rating = a celebration of his life.
• Negative rating = :( sorry to see him go.

sooo...... any guesses as to who gets the spot?

My vote is for Tim Cook. Bout time they get him on the board.

Which is another example why the MacRumors +/- rating system is pointless and is a precious waste of electrons.

Terrible. And 71 isn't *that* old these days. My thoughts go out to his family.

R.I.P.

To be a fly on the wall at his service ...

Two comments:

1. Four more years before I am his age, so 71 is not that old. (I still think of myself as 50-something.)

2. Why all the 'positive' / 'negative' comments tally? I don't see any way to 'vote' on this (or ANY) news article.

Lots of class

Apple's main-page tribute shows a lot of class on their part. Most companies' directors are and remain relatively unknown to the rest of us. Their respect for him, and by extension for all their employees, shines through.

How can anyone vote negatively about someone who has passed away?! Personally I think that's horrible, but that's just me. Vote positive as a show of support, to indicate that he will be missed, and for the tasteful tribute on Apple's website.

In fact, voting should be disabled for this story... it's too confusing and is disrespectful.

RIP good sir.
