If you look at the back of the blue (aluminum) on the apple page, it says “Ion-X”.

These higher-end models never made a lot of sense, given the device itself has such significant performance upgrades every year.

I agree.

I upgrade yearly to the latest model.

I’ve had a ceramic and it was fine, and a couple stainless steel ones too. Last year I decided to go for aluminum and I just ordered a new aluminum. Really it’s not scratched or dented - it was just fine to have aluminum. When I resell locally I doubt I’ll be penalized in price enough to have made stainless worthwhile, and I do remember it was a bit harder selling my used ceramic watch. Who wants to pay a premium price for a old model watch? The guy who bought my ceramic had his reasons, but hey if I damage my aluminum watch I’ll just get another one - self insured.

I always buy the cheapest option. Space gray aluminum. I have never had a single scratch on my glass or on the watch at all. This is not a Swiss watch that I will keep forever so for someone that in my case has a 1 year life span why would I buy any option that is more expensive? I don't get why people pay way more for stainless steel or titanium for a watch that will be replaced a year later.

I always get the previous generation in stainless steel for ~$300 (paid $339 for my S4 Silver SS 44mm just a few months ago). I keep them usually 1.5 - 2 years. The IonX glass scratches instantly. I remember the one time I had the aluminum model it was full of tiny scratches within a few months. But you've never had the sapphire crystal -- it's flawless. It's truly amazing. The other nice features of upgrading: the beauty of SS over the super cheap looking aluminum, you get Cellular (honestly, I haven't used this yet), better resale value. I just can't stomach that cheap looking aluminum and the scratches on IonX glass.

I really wanted to buy the ceramic S6 and was waiting for it. And they discontinued the 5 so I can’t even get the old ceramic one 😭. Do you guys think it’ll come back with the 7? Or maybe a refresh mid year

Me too. I have the ceramic Watch Edition 2 and I am finding it to be very very slow. I would love to get a new ceramic and I was waiting for 6 to get it. Very frustrating that it is not available.

For those who think it's "dumb" to get one, I'll just say that I can afford it, I love my ceramic watch, lots of people ask about it or notice it, it's beautiful, it works with _any_ band color of which I have 8, it works with almost any clothes I wear, and I don't mind paying for a premium product. My family are artists and so I care a great deal about design and appearance.

Now I have to try and find a 5 to upgrade. Ug.

The ceramic was an interesting idea (I wanted one), but it sounds like the price kept the take rate lower than what Apple could justify. Too bad.

Finally ran out of enough suckers to justify offering these... honestly what we're spending now is hard to justify given the utility for something that'll be outdated and we'll want to upgrade within 3 years if we don't accidentally break or lose it before then. Don't get me wrong, I've got my order placed. It ain't the steel version, but it ain't the SE either.

It is so disappointing that Apple discontinued the ceramic watch again.

I do have a Series 5 ceramic and absolutely love it and was so excited to get a Series 6 ceramic. Now I do not even know if I want to upgrade. The only watch without „Nickel“ (I am allergic) would be titanium but that ones scratches very easily and I do not like that color.

How are those original $17K Apple Edition gold watches holding up these days? Always wondered how something with a battery, and surely one day limited memory and CPU would last. I love utility of my watch, but in no way do they belong in the same realm as mechanical watches in that price range that will work for many decades.

There are only two outcomes for that one:
1) Money is no object and the buyer doesn’t care at all about its depreciation. The watch is probably in a landfill somewhere.
2) If the watch was kept in sealed mint state, maybe just maybe it has kept its value or will be worth the same in the future at least.

It would really have been cool if Apple said those that bought the gold ones could send it in for the guts of a series 2 to be installed.

Series 6 is like the most boring Watch ever.
Maybe so... but for those of us with people we care about looking to them for health reasons love this newer oxygen monitoring feature. I will personally be changing the models I buy for both parents based on this feature. I will keep a 5 for myself.

I too had a chat with apple support but getting an answer just wasn’t meant to be. Lol

It was the color. Polished black ceramic would have sold an order of magnitude more. I guess they were worried you couldn't tell the difference between the SBSS but with them making it more "grey" this year with the graphite they wouldn't have had that problem.
