Apple today discontinued its Pro Display XDR, following the introduction of a new 27-inch Studio Display XDR monitor.

Introduced in December 2019 alongside a redesigned Mac Pro, the 32-inch Pro Display XDR was Apple's return to the premium external monitor market. The launch came three years after the company exited the category with the discontinuation of the Thunderbolt Display in 2016.

The Pro Display XDR drew particular scrutiny for its $999 Pro Stand, which was sold separately from the $4,999 display. Apple defended the price by emphasizing its precise engineering, height, tilt, and rotation adjustments, and support for both landscape and portrait orientations, but it was a focal point of criticism at launch.

In its place, Apple now offers an all-new Studio Display XDR, featuring a 5K resolution with mini-LED backlighting and up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity with up to 140W charging and multiple high-speed ports.

Compared with the Pro Display XDR, which was a larger 32-inch 6K monitor aimed at high-end HDR workflows, the new Studio Display XDR is smaller and cheaper, but it also features modern panel technology, higher refresh rates, and more connectivity.

Pre-orders for the new display begin March 4 and availability starts March 11, with pricing starting at $3,299 for standard glass and $3,599 with nano-texture glass.

They’ll probably replace it later this year.

The most expensive aspect of the display, like the Mac Pro, was the ‘honeycomb’ milling process for the enclosure. I can’t see any other reason they would discontinue it.
I was wondering that, checked the new XDR and it's literally half the price of the 32 inch one and appears to come with a stand!

Although 3k is still too rich for my blood especially for a monitor, I do feel making the XDR in a 27 and 32 inch version would be a good idea.

Even if the 32 inch costs an extra 1k.

While I think the pricing is horribly high, where is going from a 32" to a 27", 6k to 5k viewed as a good thing for a brand new product?

“Maybe” there is a 40” 8K Pro XDR coming…. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in the works. It also creates a bigger jump from both 5k and 27”.

6k at 120hz uses more bandwidth than 8k at 60hz. Apple “may” of thought that not having 120hz might have been seen as inferior if they sold two different size 27” & 32” and the 32” being only 60hz.

However I think 60hz can be overlooked if you sell a 40” 8K XDR monitor.

Some might argue 40” is too big but it sure would be monolithic 😎

I understand why they introduced the new 27-inch XDR Display. What I don’t understand is why they haven’t updated the 32-inch XDR. Many people are looking for larger monitors!

Why sell you one 32" monitor when they can sell you two 27"! I jest, I can't understand why Apple seems to have such a dislike for large format monitors.

The 32" isn't even big compared to the variety of other (much cheaper) monitors on the market. I swear by my flat 34" ultrawide, which is annoying because they all seem to be curved now, I'll never be able to replace it.

Honestly i think 27" is the sweet spot for size anyway - I don't know why people want 32" and bigger, or multi monitor setups - any time I have to start turning my head to see things my eyes can't just glance at, i'm out.

Spot-on. And especially for most people here who don't need a display the caliber of the XDR. It's not for gaming or casual every day display use.

I personally prefer 3x 27" monitors over one or two 32" ones. I don't have the space for three 32" ones and that is too big anyway.

The discontinuation of the Pro XDR display makes me think the Mac Pro is likely to be discontinued in the near future as well.

There may be another 32" display, but it sounds like 6K 120Hz is not possible with Thunderbolt 5, so it will have to wait for newer technology.

I know the pandemic was the real reason they switched to pre-recorded events, but I think the reaction to the stand reveal was the reason they never went back 😛
