Apple will never update the display. It is getting out of the standalone display market. Otherwise they would of discontinue it when a new one is announced. This move is the best proof. The company is even suggesting to go elsewhere. I don't mind though iMac 5K are just remarkable.

It is not clear why Apple has decided to make an announcement concerning the discontinuation of the display and if it means a new 4K or 5K display is on the horizon.

Yes, it's called the iMac 21" 4K & 27" 5K and you can buy it now and activate target display mode.
If Apple still charges $1K for an outdated 27" display, then what would the price point of a 4 or 5K monitor be ?
$1499 and $1799 ? right.. that's the price of the current iMacs.

Just removing the logic board would not lower costs significantly enough to squeeze in between $1K - $1.5K and still be a viable option when compared to competitors offerings.

But I like the fact it ties into all my other Mac gear. I don't really want a non apple screen on my desk. Anyone recommend the best looking alternative?

I really hope that Apple releases an updated Thunderbolt Display, but I'm doubtful that will happen unfortunately. Apple just doesn't really seem to care that much about displays, and it's likely easier for them to just let Mac users buy third-party monitors.

Why? For not continuing to sell a display only a fool would purchase that has been dated for years and costs almost as much as a full on computer? I can't believe anyone would have been stupid enough to still purchase it.... it hasn't even had a price drop.... and it's USB 2 ports....
For ending the product and not replacing it with a modern equivalent. But sure, follow Apple blindly into the molten lava.

why onot buy 5k imac?
not portable enough.

its sad that everyone on here are such downers about Apple...
The real question is, why didnt they stop selling these a long time ago...
Like the Apple TV they didnt sell a screen just the box connecting the screen, they cant make enough profit keeping up with monitors when there is to much competition not to mention the real-estate the screens take up in the stores (in the back) Smart move apple.

Why so? It has been one of the best quality displays available in the market IMO.
The screen resolution / refresh is great. The Thunderbolt hub capability is awesome. The screen glare is so bad that it kinda kills the experience. I'm looking at it right now. Or, should I say, I'm looking at my face's reflection on it.

Seriously, if it didn't have that super-reflective glass on the front, it would be great.

While sad, it makes a great deal of sense. Only Mac mini and Mac Pro need to be connected to the display (unless they run headless).

The question is, what else is about to walk the plank? My guess is AirPort products (AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule) all of which are overdue for an update.
