Removing the dependency on Thunderbolt, and diverting focus to USB 3.1-C allows Apple to offer AMD Zen systems for APUs and Zen FX CPUs, along-side the Radeon/FirePro RX series of Polaris and upcoming Vega HBM2 memory GPGPUs.

Are people really freaking out over a monitor? It's discontinued, big deal... buy a better and cheaper monitor, there's tons of them out there.

If you're going to "quit" Apple over something so insignificant, you probably should have done that years ago.

Hmmm... Not looking good for the Mac. One step closer, I guess, (for me) away from this platform.

So far I've already stopped using iWork, iPhoto/Photos, and now I'm working on switching away from iTunes and to Google Play. Sold my iPad mini last fall and have recently been thinking about getting a Surface. Still set on my Mac for another year or two but by that time who knows what will remain of today's Mac lineup. I suppose I should start using that Bootcamp partition a little more...

I swear, at this rate, they may as well just kill the entire Mac line and get it over with!

AUGH! How I DESPISE Apple right now! Betrayal after betrayal after betrayal! Thunderbolt displays were always an incompatibility JOKE, but this takes the cake!

I'm calling it: Apple is going to kill the entire Mac line in the next 5 years and do NOTHING but their garbage iToys.

No wonder.

In Australia,
A$1,600 - Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch) [1440p]
A$569 - BenQ GW2765HT 27in 2K IPS Monitor [1440p]
A$1,139 - LG 34UC87C 34in Curved UltraWide IPS Monitor [10-bit 3440 x 1440]
A$320 - OWC 12 Port Thunderbolt 2 Dock

The Thunderbolt Display likely has higher build quality, but I could buy 2x BenQ (+ Dock) or a 34" LG (+ Dock) and have $150 to spare. It's hard to justify a $700 Apple Tax with little incentive (it's not like I need to buy an Apple Display to use macOS).
Yeah, it was only worth it when it had just come out, maybe for a few years after. It's ancient now.

Not by a long shot. 2560x1440 110ppi display for $1000 in 2016? USB 2 ports?

My $500 Dell P2715Q blows it out of the water, is matte, 4K, IPS, 3X USB 3.0 ports, identified by macs as a Retina display with multiple scaling options and is an absolute dream to look at/edit video on. I'm sure anyone with $1000 could do even better than me, but I opted for two of these Dells to go with a custom built 12 core Haswell-E/980Ti hackintosh because I simply couldn't push myself to buy a 2013 Mac Pro with worse video and CPU for more money. I'll pay the apple tax all day, but for frick's sake at least keep the hardware current so I don't feel totally jipped.

Their official statement really leads me to believe they're just going to straight up not make a standalone display anymore, though.
What do USB ports on a monitor do? I'm not sure what function they serve.

Apple is phasing out the display because the new iMac A10 desktop doesn't support dual displays and they are pushing us back to single display computers so it can look and feel like the iPad pro.

Great for laptops with those dinky screens, and you get a recharge at the same time.
I have a use Thunderbolt Display with rMBP. While very convenient, TD not being retina often makes me use smaller 15" screen. And it's also a shame that its connectivity is so outdated and power/Thunderbolt cable is not detachable (mine is fraying).

I cannot imagine anyone buying this for the last two to three years. I mean, it is 2011 tech costing one grand ...

To be fair that can be said for almost everything apple sells at any given time.

Not 2011 but old tech at high price excluding phones and iPads.

Apple today told several news sites that it plans to discontinue its Thunderbolt Display, which has been available for purchase online and in Apple retail stores since it was first introduced in the summer of 2011.

Apple will continue to sell existing Thunderbolt Display stock so long as it remains available, but once stock is exhausted, the Thunderbolt Display will no longer be available as production is ceasing. It is not clear why Apple has decided to make an announcement concerning the discontinuation of the display and if it means a new 4K or 5K display is on the horizon.

Stock shortages ahead of WWDC sparked rumors that Apple might be planning to introduce a new display at the event, but no new hardware appeared and Apple instead focused on software for iOS devices, Macs, Apple TVs, and Apple Watch devices.

Rumors have suggested Apple is working on a 5K display, and if true, such a display could feature a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 peripherals, and a design that mimics the latest iMacs. Speculation suggests it could come equipped with a built-in GPU or use a DisplayPort 1.2 Multi-Stream Transport setup to stitch two halves of a display together to make one seamless display.

If a new Thunderbolt Display is in the works, it could launch alongside next-generation Skylake Retina MacBook Pros, which are rumored to be in the works for late fall.

My guess is that they will drop thunderbolt and now use USB-C.

Sigh

Your hackintosh sounds AWESOME! I've only seen "budget" ones...
My only issue at all with your post (speaking as a gypsy)... is, I assume that you weren't aware that gypped/jipped is a racial slur?

WOW, that's very sad news. I still have hope they will eventually come up with a 5K option.
I LOVE my ACD 30" and Apple displays were always great.

Apple is really dropping the ball on the pro community. That's very sad.
We can only wish at this time better things are on the pipeline for pro's but I am not holding my breath.
