Okay. So this is the direction Apple is taking.
Unless Apple exceeds my expectations with the MacBook Pro refresh, I'm done with this company. There's nothing for me here anymore.

you can always wait a few years until you can buy their car.

Shame. The 20", 23", and 30" CCFL LCD lineup was tops. The switch to repurposing iMac LED LCD panels (first 24" then 27" models) as replacements screamed of profit margin focus replacing professionally recognized and respected displays. Given the official statement, it's 99.9% certain that Apple has officially killed their display "line".

It wasn't a niche market, many professionals used them on Mac's and Windows systems. Annie Leibovitz famously used 4 30" CCFL LCD's with her Power Mac's years ago as they required little to no calibration and worked seamlessly with OS X.

This.

I have 2 30" connected to my old '08 Mac Pro. They are still working great.

One of the reasons the old displays were expensive is because Apple got the best "stock" and they used decent panels. If you know anything about TFT displays, it's a yield game as well as display technology. How many dead, stuck pixels do you want? It wasn't uncommon for Apple's displays to arrive perfect. They also used top-of-the-line IPS panels.

Just like Xeons vs Core, if you're going to compare monitor specs, Dell's UP2715K uses virtually same panel as the iMac 5K (LG's LM270QQ1) and it's around $1500. I don't know why Apple can't do the same. They seem to be getting a pretty good deal on them considering the low end 5K iMac starts at $1800.

If a new Thunderbolt Display is in the works, it could launch alongside next-generation Skylake Retina MacBook Pros, which are rumored to be in the works for late fall.

Article Link: Apple Discontinues Thunderbolt Display

If they discounted the Thunderbolt Display, that means a new Thunderbolt Display is not in the works. It would be an "Apple Display" with USBC, if anything. A new "Thunderbolt Display" would contradict the announcement. In fact, their push for customers to use 3rd party options, strongly hints that nothing is coming to replace it IMO.

Some things still need raw power that tablets can't do as well right now.

Exactly. What will developers (myself included) use to produce those applications? Photographers, film production, designers, and even consumers still need power and display real estate that iPad's and 15" MacBook's won't replace. Most have at least two displays. Currently I have three LED Cinema Displays running on my 12-Core Mac Pro6,1. Still run well but absolutely outdated tech, especially as the Thunderbolt Display replaced it and most displays on the market are more affordable and offer much more.

Why they killed their dedicated display line in 2008 is beyond me. They sold very well for the company.

Can't you use the iMac in target display mode with another Mac? Maybe that's why they killed it. With all the features of Sierra like iCloud Drive sync, it makes sense to just have two Macs for the price of the Thunderbolt Display. Just a guess through. I'm sure they didn't sell tons of the Thunderbolt Displays.

Apple's belief that even a desktop Mac must always become thinner and lighter (seriously, who is picking up and carrying around their iMac on a regular basis who would even notice or care about that)
i think you care about that.. and so does everyone else.

would you buy a tv like this?

maxresdefault.jpg

...back then, i bet you didn't care that it was as bulky as it was and it seemed normal to you.. but now, looking back, you can see that it was way too heavy and fat..

just like in 25 years from now, people will look back at today's desktop computers and think "geez.. so intrusive" (etc)

Why so? It has been one of the best quality displays available in the market IMO.

It depends on your concerns. For the amount Apple charges, there are standalone display options with better warranties, better uniformity, and better color stability (they all drift over time, but some have features to help with this).

I don't know.
With the PC market in constant decline every quarter, I would think it is now the opposite.

It is more likely that computer monitor sales are in a rapid decline as well and thus Apple sees no point in continuing to sell separate displays as it is no longer profitable enough for them.
This is part of the gradual phasing out of the Macintosh in favor of the "post PC era". I predict the Mac Pro will go soon, next the Mini, then the iMac. Apple will make just portable Macs until the iPad replaces them. This will probably only take as long as it takes to get higher end apps on the iPad. Most of the Mac software will probably be discontinued in the next 5 years like Final Cut and Logic once they have iPad versions just as powerful.

Not a future I wanted to live in...but oh well. Here comes the post PC era.....or as I call it....the watch band era.

Built-In hub for USB Challenged Laptops.
So I can connect a USB device to a monitor and it will work with the laptop?
[doublepost=1466736751][/doublepost]
Connecting USB devices.
That's obvious. I was wondering if connecting USB devices to the monitor would only work with the monitor, or would it also work with the laptop or desktop connected to it.

Says the person who's icon is Microsoft logo o_O
Well I must say that I bought an Asus Zeenbook, Office 365 subscription, selling all my Macs except for the iMac 5k (Because in terms of design is still better than other All In Ones), not looking for an iPhone or iPad anymore, my 5s will work until Apple releases an iOS that will make it extremely slow . There is no difference in having a Mac anymore, (even rumors are boring) competition offers better tech, better price, manufactures are catching up with hardware design, the only missing piece is Windows, eventually they will create a good looking OS that can work with high res displays. Then what is left for Apple?, but is good they run on renewable energy, I like that about Apple.

Strange that they haven't introduced a 4K or 5K model yet. Wonder why the long delay?
Strange that they haven't introduced a Skylake Mac mini yet. Wonder why the long delay?

Perhaps they're simply giving up on standalone displays, and all the Macs that need one.
why onot buy 5k imac?
I'm guessing he needs the portability.
Yes, it's called the iMac 21" 4K & 27" 5K and you can buy it now and activate target display mode.
Not quite, the 4K and 5K iMacs don't support Target Display Mode.

Skylake in Mac mini? Isn't that an entry level Mac? Mac Pro yes, but the mini???

I do not understand this move by Apple. They've got a great line of laptops for people that want to go mobile, but then don't offer an Apple Cinema Display? Basically saying, there are plenty of third party options to hook your macbook up to. Or what about the Mac mini? Or the power Mac? Those people will DEFINITELY need a display. So Apple is happy about offering half a product, and letting a different company supply the other half? Huh? Dumb move apple.

Not to mention that you can't use the new 5k iMacs as monitors anymore like you used to be able to. Lame.

Nothing lost. Better options for professional monitors in the market. Not sure who still buys these, poor sales probably why they got cut.

Yes it's the entry level Mac, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be kept current. The appropriate Skylake chips are available now in comparable small form factor PCs, and the mini is two generations back at Haswell.

So what are they going to kill next? The Mac Pro?

Oh ****…

"Can't innovate anymore my ass…umption was correct!"

As a creative who uses Macs, this really makes me feel like Apple doesn't care about creatives who use Macs anymore. I've been holding out for a retina upgrade and USB 3.0 for a few years and was wanting to upgrade my Mac at the same time. If they're not making them anymore because they're not selling—well—I can tell you why they're not selling! I really do hope they're waiting for the tech to mature and finally got embarrassed that they're still selling them. But I don't have much hope for that given the wording in their statement. What am I going to hook up to the 5K iMac I buy next year? No way I want to stare at some plastic Dell logo all day. Someone should start a service installing high quality 27" 4K panels into old Thunderbolt displays. I seriously wonder how tricky that would be to pull off? I'd try it if I had a lot of money to potentially burn. I barely soldered together a semi-working telephone and AM radio from parts back in middle school and that process scarred me for life.

That's the thanks all of us pro's are getting? Us (older) imaging professionals carried Apple through their darkest days in the 90's... I feel like we are being kicked to the curb now. You are welcome Apple!

Really? I guess I'm nobody. Mine has had a RAID plugged into it's Thunderbolt port for years. I'm such a freak.

Not one studio I've ever been to has had a single thunderbolt device. And I work in media. Everyone's on USB 3.0.

You're just an exception. Face it, the port is a failure.
