so, mobile me going free , or mobile me going as a subscription app on the appstore .. i reckon the app store route is where it will go, cant see apple giving anything away free if they have been charging for it previously.

Great, so for those of us who have paid through a few years as we purchased it with an iPhone or such, do we get reimbursed?!

The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. You want a refund for a product that you've used for the past few years!? Are you being serious?

This will probably mean no more stock for resellers... Means paying retail from apple from now on too.

I hope it remains paid. However, I do hope it gets a lot of improvement otherwise I may not be renewing this year.

No I stated I purchased it so I have it through 2012. Any time I bought a new Mac or iPhone I bought MobileMe as it was discounted at the time of purchase.

For example:

I doubt that MobileMe will be free. It's just not the Apple Way.
Maybe a feature-poor free version with a Pro Membership lurking fascinated users ;)

What this really means

1. The "locker" aspect will be free. Lockers will house your movies/tv shows/music/apps etc. that you have purchased in iTunes. In actuality, these will simple be permission-based links. Why would this be free? Well, because it makes the entire iDevice ecosystem incredibly friendly.
2. Me.com mail - possibly free and gives Apple a nice alternative to GMail. MobileMe mail also works great with iDevices and Macs. I'm still a little surprised Apple hasn't offered a free Windows client for Mail, Address Book and iCal. Outlook is pricey whether purchased individually or in the Office Bundle.
3. Photo Storage - Fee based with a possible 10GB free. Syncs between iDevices and Macs.
4. iDisk - Fee based with a possible 10GB free. Allows you to have needed files always on hand no matter the device being used.

Services will be free where they offer significant value and a compelling reason to keep people in the iTunes ecosystem. If it is quite seamless, it is something that it's competitors can't match and a great reason to prevent people from switching.

For the record, you didn't state any such thing. You asked what would be done for those who had purchased it. Your original comment came off as though you wanted a refund for all the many times you've purchased it. Your original quote:

If they make it free it seems they would refund a prorated amount for all those that have purchased it and have it expiring after the point at which it becomes free. That would make sense anyway.

Free Isn't Always Better

I guess I just don't get all the "MobileMe should be free" comments. Don't get me wrong - I'd like to pay less and get more. But free comes at a price, either in functionality, support, or something else. Apple is a for profit company. If they don't earn a profit they can't develop future services and products. All of the infrastructure needed for these type of services is expensive. As opposed to Google's offerings, when I have had an issue in the past Apple provided support (I might add great support). That's worth something.

I think the question is more about pricing of the service. Perhaps the cost is to high for the services provided and a lower price would be better received. And yes, it could be bundled as a "premium" benefit of Apple device ownership. But that would probably be a "1st year free" type of deal, not forever.

Personally, I'd love to see a combination. Free for basic service and lower storage limits; Paid subscription for more storage, premium features, and continued support.

Um, no. Nice changing your comment. FOR THE RECORD, next time you refer to someone as stupid, why not get off your high horse and ASK before you insult?

My original quote, as you referenced:

meaning paid through ahead, not past tense…

It really pisses me off when people assume someone is stupid and leap to such an erroneous conclusion instead of inquiring about their statement (which frankly makes them seem "stupid"). It never ceases to amaze me how often I read "You're dumb", "Oh yeah, well, you're a poopy face!" comments out of nowhere on MacRumors. WTF are we children or adults?!

As long as I can keep using my Mac.com email addy AND can do something to avoid ads, it will all be fine....

I do not like that my iPad only uses me.com, try to explain to people that they are the same. It doesn't work. Just like trying to convince my ex's divorce lawyer that forum posts are NOT emails. Dude, you are just making yourself sound ignorant, you did not download email from my computer, you found public forum posts and copied them. Moron.

Anyway, I underuse MobileMe anyway.....

MobileMe Free, Extra features for a fee?

I foresee a free MobileMe offering:
Mail, Calendar, Gallery, Find my iPhone, Address Book (To compete with Google)

I foresee the $99 (or some lesser cost) MobileMe offering the following additional features:
Webhosting, AirDrop Integration, the Locker.

Free sounds good to me! I would like to see them prorate what's left on my family pack and just throw it on the iTunes store as a credit:)

I heard that!! That would make the Facetime charge a non-issue, not that I can blame them for having to charge for it.

Portends at least an update to MobileMe - free or still paid. My sub isn't up until June so I hope it just comes out before WWDC!

Lots of potential with MobileMe and basically puts it in competition even more with Google. I'm all for that.

I'd be happy if I got at least 100Mb. FREE for light use (a couple of docs, or some spreadsheets, a pair of docs). :D

If I want more I should pay for the service, I think this is fair.

I just paid full price for a renewal last week (forgot about the expiration and didn't have time for an Amazon order).

Hmm — wonder if I'll get a pro-rated refund if they transition to a free service? ;)
