I've been really excited about Apple moving to their own chips in Macs since it was a rumor. With that said, the issue isn't entirely the hardware. I'm not making the move until I don't have to fire up my terminal with Rosetta to do my development work. This isn't on Apple, per se, but the software issues will take longer than the hardware. (And that's expected, it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation.)

Also, I look forward to a bigger iMac. I recently moved from a laptop to an iMac and... I can't say I want to go back. Although a "Pro" Mini with a standalone display would be all right too.

This is cool stuff. We'll see. I'm mixed on the MacBook Pros—but nothing show stopping. I think I have to see the notch in action. The promo pictures are interesting because in the Pro apps they regularly show the top back as just black.

Intel/AMD are in a bit of trouble.

Not really. Apple is a big customer for Intel but... not even close to the biggest. If ARM servers grow in the hosting space, that's probably a bigger deal for Intel. Windows starting to focus on ARM is a problem too.

Is there anywhere a comparison between this new 13” MacBook pro and M1 MacBook air? Curios what the differences are.

Everything old is new again… ;)

(Image from Magic Workbench, I'm somewhat astonished and impressed that that site is still online!)

The 14" is essentially a replacement for the 13.3" with the old plain vanilla M1 chip, and is priced $700 higher. Truly a staggering price increase. I'm wondering if the upcoming redesigned MacBook Air will start at $1649.

Now looking forward to high-end iMac models. Surprised they couldn't be shown today. Hopefully in a spring event, like last year's M1 iMac.
Maybe they are waiting for the 32” miniLED panels to be produced in large quantities before they announce the new high end iMac.

Today must have been hard to watch for Intel, even though Apple was never a major slice of their business. Especially in light of the recent comments from Intel’s CEO. They aren’t catching up to the M1/M1 Pro/M1 Max any time soon. And even if they did, they aren’t going to be nearly as efficient.

That’s not really fair though. The new 14” has significantly more powerful GPU, faster RAM, much better display, and shoot, all the extra ports are damn near worth it.

But it isn't.

The 13.3" with the old plain vanilla M1 chip replaced the two-port Intel MacBook Pro.

The 14" is now replacing the four-port 13.3" Intel MacBook Pro.

The two-port MacBook Pro has always been significantly cheaper than the four-port one.

They should have just dropped the 13.3 M1 MacBook Pro. There is barley any difference between it and the M1 MacBook Air. Also can’t see how the 13.3” can even be classed as a pro alongside the machines they released today.

I'd like an intel option. Them going intel really made me want a mac in the first place, but as long as it works, I'm good. Word processors and stuff don't really care what's inside.

It’s pretty incredible that Apple was able to complete this transition so fast. I can’t wait to get my hands on it next week.
Man you’ve been MIA here! Which model did you go with? I picked up an M1 Air a couple months back and absolutely love it so am sitting this year out. But this is exciting times for Mac.
