OK, so Apple put some ARM cores and a gpu into the M1, which TSMC makes on their 5nm fab, so after china takes over Taiwan, no more chips for apple.

The 16" M1 pro is the ultimate 3 kilobuck web surfer. Apple finally has caught up with my 2014 Dell XPS 15 9550 running Linux Mint. Its got USB, HDMI AND SD card ports on it, and 32 GB RAM, whooHoo! (which my Dell has had since 2014) At 4.7 lbs, the macbook is heavier than my 4.4 lb Dell, maybe from a bigger battery, which they crow endlessly about, like you really need 15 hours or whatever.

what M1 is really about: more profit for apple

What do you use your MBA for? I use mine for school, but I still upped RAM to 16GB. I don’t intend to replace my Air for years. Next replacement is the next-gen iPad Pro.
Honestly, nothing overly taxing, just like shiny new things that run fast and have more features

The west is capable of producing its own chips, as we speak new factories are already being built. Sure there will be a delay for a couple of years. And it isn't just Apple.
