Yes, a fantastic marketing ploy. Why else would Apple do it? Because they really, really care? Let's not be naive.

Yes, it is the Catholic Church, which is a single entity.

The ignorance is strong on this one. It's owned by the French ministry of Culture. And for your information, it's also a UNESCO world heritage site, so this is equivalent to the Colosseum being destroyed. Have some respect for such sites, it's a piece human history for all our future generations to learn from, it's got nothing to do with religion or money at this point.

There goes Timmy, on his SJW campaign. I'm sure he cares deeply about the Catholic church (sarcasm). Look, it's great to donate money to this cause, if you truly care. When it's done purely for PR, it's garbage.

Its a miracle it wasn’t totally destroyed! I just don’t get people’s ignorant comments here. The building is a heritage of western life and is more than a cathedral! It has the same value as the pyramids in Egypt or Taj Mahal in India. If they were about to be destroyed the same companies would donate in the same way.

The level of ignorance in this thread is astounding!
"The Church" does not own the Notre Dame Cathedral.
The Cathedral is a beautiful and historic building.

Thank you Apple, and everyone else who is pitching in to restore this building.
It's horrible that it happened, but now efforts need to be positive to restore it.

This. Exactly this. I'm no fan of catholocism but the building is a testament to human ingenuity. Though the LEAD roof is more than just a bit concerning.

Why is apple donating? The church has more money than most governments.

1) The Cathedral is owned by the French State, not the Church.
2) The Cathedral is part of UNESCO's world heritage.
3) The Cathedral is a major touristic attraction, that is it generates money. Lots of money.
4) The Cathedral is a major real-estate value driver. If it fell apart so would part of Paris' real estate value.
5) The fact that it's historically used by a religion does not make it less valuable in the eyes of society. Lots of history happened in there or because of there, lots of art is in there, etc. I am catholic but, should it be damaged, I'd be glad to contribute at rebuilding the Blue Mosque due to its historical value, and I almost can't be farther than the religion that utilizes it.
6) It's money from a company. If you're a shareholder, you're free to invest somewhere else. If you're a customer, you're free to not buy from the company. No one is stealing it from you, no one is asking you to use tax money for it.

What a massively impressive building. The rebuilding/restoration will take a significant amount of time, fortunately the entire building was not a total loss. I wonder if they’ll ever be able to determine what caused the fire.

[doublepost=1555427829][/doublepost]Same with literally any other company that has donated to this cause if you go by your logic.

Sad news to come out of Paris, but I just wanted to mention a similar or arguably even more significant loss that occurred last year, because it didn’t get anywhere near the same attention or coverage that it rightfully deserved.

That is the almost complete and total destruction by fire of the National Museum of Brazil, along with up to 20 million items and artefacts from its collection. It was a significant loss, not just for Brazil but to the entire collective human heritage.

I don’t recall Apple donating anything on that occasion, even though Brazil is far less capable of coping with and rebuilding after such a devastating loss. There aren’t rich billionaires offering to help with recovery or reconstruction either as far as I’m aware, but if there are I’ll edit the post. The arduous and painstaking task of sifting through the ashes is achieved mostly by students and volunteers. I think it’s the case that France is a much bigger market for Apple and these donations are in part a form of marketing, for better or worse.

Unfortunately, the risk of and ultimate severity of the inferno was exacerbated by chronic underfunding and severely inadequate maintenance. The Brazil and now Paris fires highlight the risk to significant collections and historic buildings everywhere. If a major fire can break out in Windsor Castle as it did in 1992, there’s got to be thousands of important buildings across Europe and elsewhere at even greater risk of loss.

Thinking of France and Brazil.

Probably the renovation works...

I had forgotten until you brought it back up, but yes that was an absolutely devastating tragedy.
