It sounds like Google has to use the APIs that Apple provides. So while Google will get your search string, odds are it’s sent in a way that will protect users (aka, Google will get the search string and return results, but will in no way know who sent it). The only way more information would be sent would be if you clicked on the “Show Google results”.

Now, please note this is all guess work, but it seems the most likely.

Am I the only one who read this as:

"Apple Drops Bing Search Engine Results for Siri, and Spotlight in Favor of Google"

And nearly had a heart-attack at the thought of Apple using an external solution over an internal one.

At some point you've just got to admit that Google offer the best search engine on the Internet, and that's not going to change any time soon. Why hinder a product out of pride?

Ahhhh, Craig. Tell us what you have in mind for Apple Maps....

We already know that. Apple is spending billions to create a new base map that should be finished in 2018. For now, Apple Maps, after a disastrous start, has blown by Google Maps in terms of usage, and is now used billions and billions of times a week by Apple customers, used exponentially more than Google Maps even though Google Maps is free and only takes a minute to download. Independent tests show they have achieved the same level of accuracy, and with lane assist being added in iOS 11, the main feature Google Maps still has is Street View, which Apple will soon have a more advanced and smoother version of as they complete their new base map. I'd still give Google and edge in searching, but that is rapidly closing and is more than offset by the fact that if you use Google maps, Google knows where you drive and adds that to your master file they have for everyone across all their services, e.g., every photo you take, every email you send or receive, every search you make, every document you create, etc., etc., and is kept forever and is available to LE, Intel, hackers, etc. DON"T FEED BIG BROTHER (GOOGLE) , you'll regret it someday.

Honestly Bing has always returned better media results than Google and as of the past two years, more relevant search results than Google. I'm kind of disappointed to see this.
Thought I'd be the only one. As anyone who has coded knows, searching for info is HUGE. I ditched Google 2 or so years ago due to ads. Bing either has the answer in the first page or I need to edit the query.

A disappointing move from a company that repeatedly tells us how important they believe privacy is. Google has zero respect for people's privacy and you can bet Google is now collecting and storing data about you when you use Siri and Spotlight and selling it to advertisers and whoever else is willing to pay for it.

Anecdotal but I went on a trip this summer and needed directions. Buddy typed the camp site that we were going to in GMaps. Place is big. We ended up going to the other side. Still within bounds of the forest but 1 hour away from the main trail. Typed in AMaps and got us there after we arrived at the wrong place.

Google is overrated.

THANK GOODNESS. I noticed over the weekend that asking Siri to "Search Google for..." was no longer working and was simply searching Bing and it was making me crazy. I'm guessing the feature wasn't working because this switch over was in process.

I honestly think Google is extremely overrated, especially these days. Bing in some cases offers better results, it just doesn't have the Google name. I switched to DuckDuckGo expecting trash and I don't miss Google at all. I say stop spreading the lie that only a stalking giant can have good online services.

Maybe people inexperienced in both engines. I however use both extensively. As far as media, Bing wins hands down and always has. For general searches, those are subjective but as I stated, Bing has been returning more relevant results than Google as of late.

It's definitely just bias. People laugh at the idea Microsoft can make a search engine as good as Google, I think based on real world use its already better.

While I love Microsoft, Craig Federighi is putting Siri in a better position. Siri should’ve never have used bing to begin with

Maybe they will announce YouTube 4K compatibility with ATV to return the favour?

It's never going to happen. YouTube 4k uses VP9 and Apple will never add it because it's a Google codec and decoding would have to be done in software and would therefore be terrible for battery life. HEVC is the industry standard and Apple has already added support for it to all its products and hardware decoding of HEVC has been on its chips since the A9.

"personal" is the key word. No they don't sell your name, email etc but they do collect your data (searches, topics etc) and sell that. And other companies (mine included) triangulate data from other sources to determine the real end users identity.
Apple does much the same. @kdarling can explain it far better than I can but the gist of it is both companies collect your personal data and use it to sell ad slots.

Maybe Siri stands a chance now.

Starting today, Apple search results from Siri and Spotlight on Mac and iOS will be provided by Google rather than Microsoft's Bing. Apple announced the news in a statement that was given to TechCrunch this morning, claiming consistency across iOS and Mac devices is the reason behind the switch.

Prior to this morning, all results from a search conducted on Spotlight using Finder on Mac or the swipe down search bar on iOS were Bing search results, as was all search information provided by Siri. Now, when you search using Spotlight or when you ask Siri a question that ends up involving a web search, info will come from Google.

According to TechCrunch, the swap will include both web links and video results from YouTube, but web image results in Siri and Spotlight searches will continue to be provided by Bing for the time being. Google searches will use the standard search API and will provide the same search results you'd get from a Google.com search.

While Apple has used Bing for search results for things like Siri and Spotlight, Google has remained the default search engine on iOS and Mac devices. Earlier this year, reports suggested Google paid Apple nearly $3 billion to maintain its position as the default search engine on iOS devices.

The search engine swap began rolling out to users at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

FINALLY! this. yes. wth. this is some good news of a monday morning. sensible retreat. i applaud this.

For now, Apple Maps, after a disastrous start, has blown by Google Maps in terms of usage, and is now used billions and billions of times a week by Apple customers, used exponentially more than Google Maps even though Google Maps is free and only takes a minute to download.

Meaningless statistic unless Apple allowed users to change the default Map app.

Apparently you've never taken the time to access your Google Dashboard where you can control most of what is stored, and turn it on/off or delete it. Even modify what kinds of ads you like to see.

A disappointing move from a company that repeatedly tells us how important they believe privacy is. Google has zero respect for people's privacy and you can bet Google is now collecting and storing data about you when you use Siri and Spotlight and selling it to advertisers and whoever else is willing to pay for it.

Google doesn't sell personal info, any more than Apple did with iAds or currently does with App Search.

However, there are hundreds of other companies which do actually collect and sell personal data. Not using Google would not change that fact.

But but but I thought google was the route of all evil and sells all your data to anyone that wants it no matter who they are, they stalk you with ads all the time too are a generally evil empire who must be brought down no matter what!!!

Yeap, I think that’s the jist of what people post on here when it’s a story about google..
