Yep. I personally think Apple trade in is a better value as well as long as you intend on use it for an Apple purchase.

eBay/Swappa may offer a better price, but those platforms have their own fees (such as PayPal). Ideally, it would be $100 or so less than eBay listing you get to your pocket. That is without taking into the headaches if there is some scam on it.

Apple trade in at a store is the best choice.

The last two iPhones I sold on ebay were shipped to shady 'freight forwarders', which means they could have ended up in Russia, North Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. Apparently using such forwarding companies is pretty common, allowing, I'd wager, hundreds of tons of illegal tech to 'leak' to those countries, and others.

I’m sorry. For a company with $200 BILLION IN CASH sitting in the bank, they should STOP nickel-and-diming us to death. God I miss Steve. This soul-less bean counter should go. We need more leaders with great vision. Not going to trade in my perfectly capable 12 Pro Max 256. I’ve never felt the need to have the absolutely latest version of any hardware, not just for upgrades sake. There must be some serious improvements.

For the "never trade it in" crowd, a little short sighted if you care about time and annoyance.

A 12 Pro Max sells used for ~$900. If trading a 12 Pro Max at the previous $790 also gets you $790 off sales tax.

$1100 - 13 Pro Max
$95 - Sales tax (8.7%)
-$900 - Used Sale
_______________
$295

$1100 - 13 Pro Max
$27 - Sales tax (8.7%)
-$790 - Used Sale
_______________
$337

For me, the ease is (was) worth $42.

Sells for $900.00. After fees and possible box/shipping material, you get $790.00 (I always seem to get a lot less than I thought, after all that)? Apple charges sales tax on the original value, so the price difference is -$0.00-. Oh, assuming the ebay buyer pays, and doesn't try to scam you, and drag the whole process out. Even if the ebay angle gets someone more, the difference is not hundreds of dollars. With so many going to sketchy freight forwarders, I'd now rather have Apple end up with it.

The trade-ins are often pretty competitive when you take into account the returned taxes and third party seller fees, especially when you can trade in in a physical store with no risk of shipping damage. Not sure how this is nickel-and-diming.

Maybe it differs by state/country, but last time I traded in for a new device it was applied as a refund (which naturally means lower taxes).

Without knowing the laptops spec, I can still confidently assert you got ripped off. Also, the laptop didn't lose $40 in value to them with this announcement...

I checked out swappa, same specs..256GB 2018 13 inch macbook pro would have made about 750 for it..but considering I had to ship it, and paypal gets their fees..and once I ship it out I would worry if the person changes their mind and ships it back I figured who needs the hassle just trade it into apple and thats it. With my 2018 ipad pro I wont be doing that will be selling it online but with the macbook too many issues to worry about I didnt want to deal with it

If only it worked like that in the UK.

We get hammered for the 20% “value” added tax (VAT) on the full price regardless.

But that is an interesting question. If they are giving a “refund” for the value of the trade in (their words, not mine), surely they should be refunding an equivalent proportion of the VAT too? Hmmm.

You do get less by selling your used Apple devices back to Apple in general. However the thing I like about doing that, is knowing absoulutely everything will be recycled & reused rather than ending up in a landfill eventually.

I received an $800USD credit after trading my iPhone X towards my new iPhone 13 pro via AT&T. Go through your cell provider if you want better deals for a new phone.

With supply shortages?? Apple must think people are going to wait a long time for those new devices. Also, as of a month ago, 42% of Americans have racked up more credit card debt since COVID-19 began.
dropped prices to create fomo

When I ordered my M1 Pro, I traded in my existing MBP and was offered something like $1,200 for it. My girlfriend lost the shipping box so I took it into the store, where I got $1,350 instead. Glad this change didn’t impact me this time, but as someone who always keeps gear in good shape to trade up, this isn’t great.

That’s a fantastic point :)

I remember in 2017 Apple was offering same day battery repairs on iPhone 6s for $50. Or something ridiculous. I never took them up on the offer, but I don’t think you can even buy a new battery for that much (at the time).

So I figure those 30 minute turn around sessions are similar.

Anyone notice Apple getting picky as crap with their tradeins? My last 3 tradeins (iPhone, watch, iPad) all were in cases, all protected, all basically like brand new...

Apple found something wrong with each one and dropped the trade price.

Maybe it’s all the people trying to trade in an iPhone 4s for $500 credit? :)

I think the used iPhones, from the trade-in, for the “VIP” clients sort of target the “Karens” of the world.

Or someone who is very upset and a way to offer them a replacement without having to give them a new phone.

I use Apple trade in only for devices that are several years/generations behind. Last year it was the entry level iPad Air 2 and Watch series 3. When I checked eBay prices, the fees/shipping/hassle wasn’t worth it over what apple offered.

Wow. prices are way too low. Better go sell it on a third party website.
When I realized the “up to” trade in price wasn’t guaranteed (I know, duh) and low to begin with, I listed my 2020SE on eBay instead. It’s already higher than that and still most of a week remaining.
