Apple Drops Prices on 512GB and 1TB SSD Upgrades for Older Mac Lineup

Thanks for the crumbs Apple... I can buy a 36 core E5v4 Dell for less than a 12 core E5v2 MacPro. But hey, now I can upgrade my drive to 512MB for a couple hundred less... oooh ahhh. Your flagship model has become a complete joke to the industry. Its actually embarrassing to have to talk about them when PC guys come in to the office laughing.

Either Update them or kill them. This is badly hurting Apple's name and reputation. This is the most inept, disgusting management I've seen at Apple in 32 years... I can't believe they are forcing us loyal pros to switch. I'm actually devastated that this is happening.

I'm hanging on until the end of November as per a UK rumour site saying their reliable sources indicate MacPro's will be released before then. Not holding on to much hope at this point because every other rumour site says the opposite.

So they reduce the price of storage to make up for not releasing a new Mac Pro, iMac or Mac Mini? We didn't wait 3+ years for this measly consolation discount.

The mac pro and mini are both in need of an update but the iMac received skylake chips last fall. Intel hasn't released any desktop kaby lake processors yet so there isnt really anything apple can do to update them at this point without keeping the exact same CPU's.

Normally you don't need a 1TB SSD.

A 512GB m.2 SSD + 2TB hard drive or SSHD should be fine.

Maybe 1TB SSD for VM.

256MB is even fine for most pros. Generally we store the OS and apps on the internal and have the rest on external storage where we can see even better speeds.

Why would they lower prices on the MP? It's completely dead to them and they want that micro market to trail off. The profits are in the phones, watches and such. It sort of amazes me people are cluelessly waiting for an update for it.

Yeah-- if I were a pro (I'm not, at least not tech pro), I would have stepped away years ago and built my own Pro PC. I am tempted to comp shop building an ultra powerful, high quality part PC and compare it in price and performance to the best Mac Pro available. I bet the PC will overpower it by a factor of 2 and will be half as much.

I really don't get why pros sit around and wait for more mac pros. It obviously ain't gonna happen.

If you were a pro, you wouldn't build your own machine. Reliability, warranty and support would be too important to you. You'd pay whatever it took to get a machine that made you as efficient as you could be because you'd be getting paid for your productivity not for futzing with DIY computer projects.

My 4 year old self built PC has had -zero- problems and runs like a champ. Can't say the same for any apple product I've owned.

My DIY computer has had zero downtime in 3 years. Any half competent computer builder can easily and cost effectively build a computer that matches or exceeds the build quality of any prebuilt machine.

Like honestly. A computer manufacturer puts shipping units above building them well. Building my own machine I can put as much care into it as I please.

Plus "Pros" like to build their own machines because we can build a computer to the exact spec we want, and it makes upgrading way easier.
