I take this as the bridge to an all ssd drive in next iMac version.
Now the price for SSD storage is only super expensive, reduced from insanely expensive.
The design guys don’t set the prices, this has nothing to do with Ive. And we’ll still be seeing new Ive-approved designs for the next couple years, even if he and his new company never does anything with Apple.Maybe so. Maybe someone was shifted to take Ive’s role, another one shifted to take the role of the first guy and so on. And one of them came up with the idea to cut prices. Who knows. I’m not even trying to analyze that mess which actually seems to be kind of a mess after reading recent reports. But something is going on.
They still sell 21'' iMacs with 5400 rpm HDDs.![]()
Sure, butI recently upgraded the boot drive in my home-built PC to a Samsung 1 TB SSD for $130. Apple's prices are still crazy. But I must be crazy too since I'm posting this comment from my 2017 iMac with a 1 TB SSD that left me with only one arm and one leg.
Nah. The prices Apple pays fluctuate. When prices get cheaper Apple can offer cheaper upgrade options.Maybe so. Sucks. I just purchased the newest set up, but outside the 14 day window.
Alongside a refresh of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro this morning, Apple has also dropped the price on high-end storage upgrades across the Mac lineup. This includes the iMac, iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and even the soon-to-be-discontinued Mac Pro.

For the most part, 1TB SSD upgrades have dropped by $200 on the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini; and 2TB SSD upgrades have dropped by $400 on the Mac mini and MacBook Pro. The ultra high-end 4TB SSD upgrade for the MacBook Pro has dropped by $1400.
For the iMac Pro, 2TB SSD upgrades have been marked down by $200, while the 4TB SSD upgrade has dropped by $1200.
The updates continue into the old Mac Pro as well, with the 1TB upgrade dropping by $200. Apple has also removed the 64GB RAM option for the Mac Pro from its store, and made this model only available in 16GB and 32GB options.
Head to Apple.com to see more of the changes to high-end upgrades on the Mac.

They still are a great thing. Most the time they feel like an SSD. Now to be fair Apple should not sell the 1TB with 32GB SSD version. They all should have the 128GB SSD like the 2TB Fusion. But I just checked prices and the 2TB Fusion is still $700 cheaper than 2TB SSD which is not insignificant to most. And you can’t even get more than 1TB SSD unless you get the top iMac. So if someone needs that storage it’s a great way to go. Me personally, I went with 512GB SSD and added a 6TB external.how come? i haven't been "following" them, but they seemed like a great thing when first introduced.
Why not? Is this “something” a good thing? It can’t be linked to the departure of Jony Ive. Something is happening inside Apple.
Prices still are quite inflated, but finally more reasonable.
Fusion Drive should've been dropped entirely as well.
Make 256 GB SSD on Entry iMac standard!
Allow the option to swap Magic Mouse to Magic Trackpad without a $50 dollar fee.
Gold option
Magic Keyboard with Touch Bar
Small bezels!
Jesus, that's half the storage of my iPhone. That configuration shouldn't exist on a "pro" laptop.MacBook “pro” starts with 128GB storage! Not very pro like. At least they are taking baby steps.
Those smaller storage tiers push people toward iCloud... so they get you one way or another ; )1TB SSD should be standard across all Macs.

Apple typically uses MLC; you have to compare it to the Samsung 960 PRO, which is 1 TB for $329.
Also compare it to PC makers: Lenovo sells you a 1 TB Samsung 960 EVO OEM version (PM961) for a $615 upgrade. So Apple is cheaper and better than PC makers.
You can tell the old Mac Pro is at its end-of-life; no way could a max of 32 gb of RAM count as "pro". At least on that machine, you can upgrade it yourself easily. The updates continue into the old Mac Pro as well, with the 1TB upgrade dropping by $200. Apple has also removed the 64GB RAM option for the Mac Pro from its store, and made this model only available in 16GB and 32GB options.
Could have been dropped to $1. People would still complain.
