Edit: The picture in the article looks ridiculous. Does anyone really want the earpiece cutting through the display??? No.

Would be nice if Macarumors covered the largest Apple patent unveiling just a couple of weeks ago.

iPhone 8 could be made from ceramic. Bye bye ugly antenna lines.

Xaiomi already released their phone in 2016 citing Apple rumours, made of ceramic and guess what, it costs lesser than a regular iPhone.

Is what number it is called really this big of a deal?

Don't we all know that Apple could roll out the iPhone KooKooAChoo and we'd gush at it anyway... "shut up and take my money"... probably spin the genius of the Beatles homage and on and on. We sure put a lot of consumer worry into thinking some kind of perceived naming pattern must not be broken or a portion of a name of a product that could be named anything at all and have absolutely zero effect on the look or functionality of that product.

iPhone Plasma
iPhone Poop
iPhone Vomit
iPhone PrettyInPink
PhoneyBaloney
MyLittlePhoney

Etc. Who cares? As long as it works very well and does what we need it to do.

An all edge-to-edge front display is a stupid and an impractical design idea...

Lol, yup... I'm sure they give their most prized secret up to some flunkie because of his expertise in "soldering stuff".
There's a reason that's an UNSKILLED labor job.... literally anyone can do it.
I stopped reading/believing after that line.
That's simply NOT a real job position in their secret lab. Get real.
"We need some solderers in here!" Lol.

Heh, so it's already begun, and now even directly from Apple staff??

I bet we'll have unusually many rumors surrounding this phone given the radical changes.

I've also heard that Apple may change into a different, longer release cycle as people no longer replace their phones as often.

So I wouldn't be surprised if Apple uses the opportunity for a major design change to also make a major change in branding. I'm not sure so sure this phone will be called iPhone 8. We're getting so close to silly numbers like iPhone 11 or iPhone 12. Maybe this moment will be one where it'll be simply referred to as... "iPhone". Like the Mac lines. And we'll instead have to refer them to by their release year, which may no longer be yearly.

Edit: Yeah, as above... "The new iPhone" in marketing. It makes sense they want to get away from traditional branding if they are moving from traditional cycles, or even traditional designs.

The iPhone X

An all edge-to-edge front display is a stupid and an impractical design idea...

...until "we" become convinced that Apple is going to adopt it... and then it will be genius and bezels will become "antiquated," useless, "99% don't want," etc.

I recall when bigger screens were design "abominations" and would require pants with bigger pockets, "one handed use" reigned supreme, developer fragmentation, etc. Then Apple went bigger screens and I'm still looking for all those pants with bigger pockets, apparently we all grew larger hands (or noticed we have another) and developers just found a way to roll with a variety of screen sizes & resolutions.

The radically redesigned iPhone 8 is said to include an all-glass body, edge-to-edge display with the camera and Touch ID integrated into it, no traditional Home Button, and potentially wireless charging.

According to who?
No one. This is tech journalist wish list. Not an actual, sourced rumor.

Here's some reality for ya:

1) Someone probably mistook a brief glimpse at an early Jet Black prototype as an "all-glass future iPhone".
2) Apple just redesigned the Home Button (major redesign) for the first time in 10 editions. No reason to believe they would radically change it again next year.
3) The odds of the next iPhone being an iPhone 7s are about 99.9%, if you look strictly at Apple and ignore so-called tech journalism.

My personal vote for the next phone's name is quite different - Apple Phone.

Apple has gotten rid of most of their i stuff. iPhone and iTunes and iPad and iMac are all that are left. I think this year iMac will be renamed and next year iTunes and the two iOS devices. But will iOS be renamed again too? Hmmm

I don't think either name will be the one. No iPhone 8 or iPhone 7s. The next iPhone will be called:
iPhone 10th Anniversary Edition

Or maybe switch to names like they did with Mac OS. Like iPhone Niagra, or iPhone Grand Canyon.

I suppose people would really be knocked off their seats if they realized that iPhone 8s... or 9... or whatever Apple names it, is being worked on too. There really is no big black top hat that Apple's pulls phones out of even if they call them "magic." Ha ha. It's years of work for every model, even the boring ones.

When your exceptions outnumber the non-exceptions, you might want to re-think your hypothesis. ;)

But, do think going with just iPhone or Apple Phone is likely. Removes the artificial expectation of changing design as that design nears a theoretical ideal.

The iMac 11. The MacMini 6. The MacBook 12. None of those sound too good.

One day the iPhone will just be called: iPhone.

When iPhone launched it really was a phone with a few extra features, and now 10 years later it's practically a fully fledged computer with a phone app. In this regard a re-brand would make sense, but man, I just can't imagine not calling it an iPhone.

I hear you. Would probably cause an uproar with current iPhone users that don't upgrade, but the iPhone is much more than just a phone anymore. Not sure what else they could call it, and maybe they won't rebrand it, but wouldn't be shocked if they did.

As the industry matures, we're just moving towards an automotive model. We'll talk about these devices in terms of which generation they are, ignoring the incremental upgrades except when actually purchasing. The generation will refer to the year the body style was released and then the minor upgrades between body style changes will only be relevant when you go to acquire a device. Older ones will cost less if in good condition, etc.

OS X came out in 2001 and is no longer used as a designation; SpaceX was founded in 2002.
I was just giving you a hard time. If Apple used the the "X" moniker in an iPhone name, at least they could claim that it's a roman numeral unlike SpaceX. That'd hold up to some degree in court, right? :p

Apple is building hardware for next year's iPhone model at its offices in Herzliya, Israel, and referring to it internally as the "iPhone 8," according to an employee there who spoke anonymously to Business Insider. The employee works on soldering components for Apple and gave vague references to how "different" the 2017 iPhone will be from the iPhone 7, which falls in line with rumors about the iPhone 8's radical redesign, without providing detailed information to add to the previous reports.

Still, the naming scheme of next year's iPhone is one of the device's most talked-about aspects. Normally, the smartphone would carry the "iPhone 7s" moniker given that it will be following this year's iPhone 7, but given the major changes Apple plans to introduce to the iPhone in 2017, it seems unlikely the device will receive an "S" name. Because of this, there's a good chance Apple may decide to skip directly to the next full number, naming the 2017 iPhone the iPhone 8.

iphoneconceptimage.jpg

The Apple employee speaking with Business Insider keeps this idea alive, mentioning what's coming "next" from Apple and discussing the iPhone 8 "unprompted" in the conversation. The same source, "who only spoke in broken English," added that the 2017 version of the iPhone will have a better camera than the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, which is expected at this point in Apple's yearly upgrade cycle.
The radically redesigned iPhone 8 is said to include an all-glass body, edge-to-edge display with the camera and Touch ID integrated into it, no traditional Home Button, and potentially wireless charging. The device's launch will also fall on the tenth anniversary of the original iPhone's debut, back in 2007, leading to even more speculation that Apple will land on a specialized branding instead of a simple "S" naming scheme.

But because it's so early in the rumor cycle -- and because Apple's R&D offices in Herzliya have nothing to do with marketing and branding of the iPhone -- it's best to take today's report with the usual grain of salt. Tim Cook visited the Herzliya offices when they opened last year with rumored focus on storage space, processors, and communications chips being worked on by around 800 employees.
