Actually, in Mavericks while its easier, you still have the annoyance.. but if you right click in a mail message, highlight a word/sentence, right click and choose "Search with Google" it opens Safari,, no matter the default browser..

You cannot change that.

So, we all have our problems :)

Thanks to Apple..

I went back and tried Safari because of this post...it's definitely speedier than the last time I used it, but Chrome is still very fast on my machine. It also keeps me logged in to all of my Google sites by default, which is nice.

The biggest UI issue I have with Safari is that I always have between 14-16 tabs open in Chrome (why not? Keep all the main sites I check out open), and with the "Pin tab" feature, it makes each tab nice and small.

In Safari, if I open that many tabs, they just start overlapping each other with no clear way to get to a specific tab. If Safari added that, I *might* consider trying them again.

No way

This is by far and away the slowest and worst iteration of Safari since 6 came out. It is slow and crashes repeatedly. I am using Firefox full time now, the speed difference (compared to older versions of Safari) isn't any different, really. Plus the RSS options are better. Apple putting out this promo for Safari is almost laughable.

Bottom: Firefox icons not exact look good either on 10.10

I like Safari but until it has vertical tabs and Tab Mix Plus etc like Firefox, I just can't bring myself to switch. The vertical tabs is the biggest thing, I haaaate horizontal tabs now that I'm used to them. :/

This "would you like to now or later approach" is very annoying when used by updates, and reminds me of the way parents try to trick their little kids with things like "would you like to go to bed now or in ten minutes?" It's almost as bad as that old Windows paperclip guy thing. I hope we're not heading in that direction with OS X.

But Safari STILL doesn't block pop-up ads on my favourite porn sites as well as Chrome does. Pity.

Oh -- and what about that ANNOYING Java install message that keeps popping up?!? FFS Apple..

This is the behaviour I see (attached screenshots). It's an all or nothing thing.

If I set it to "Ask", it asks when I load and I can either trust, not now, or block (never for this site). "Not now" leaves it to "Ask" and it will ask each time the page loads. Trust, explains itself. "Never..." blocks all for the site.

If I set it to "Block" in preferences, then that's it - it blocks all.

None of the above allows me to run once on an individual flash use on the page, like I can in Chrome. I don't want to block all or allow all, I want to be picky.
Example: I want to be able to have all flash ads blocked on youtube, but be able to load the video.

Wow. I knew the feature existed but I didn't realize how badly it was implemented.

Go :apple:

This and this.

I'm surprised nobody seems to have figured out how to get seamless in-place updates as well as Chrome does. "Update automatically" should not equal "annoy me until I manually click install and then close all of my browsers".

I haven't used Firefox in like 3 years. Safari is just snappy.

Something odd happened to Firefox (maybe they fixed it) after using it for a few years.

No Thanks. Need those Chrome extensions.

YES!

What do people use Chrome extensions for? I never could understand, esp. since Safari has extension options.

I use a few myself, not quite the same anywhere else aside from Firefox as a close second.

I find these kind of pop ups really intrusive and irritating!
(and the sort i'd like to have hoped had died out with windows xp)
especially when all you get is a choice of 'try now' and 'later' how about a 'no thanks' option!

I am an apple lover and love everything about it, but I happened to open safari yesterday and it just got hung for more than 5 minutes and I had to force quit it, so I went back to using chrome... I mean I re-opened safari again and it worked fine but it disappointed me again.

I love the new Safari and I only use FF as a backup if something is working on a site with Safari..which is normally coupon sites for my GF.

Yes you can

You can't even sort bookmarks in Safari

You can sort them - but the way Apple has you do it is...well, badly designed for a company that now (unfortunately) is so hyper-focused on design.

Go up to the Bookmarks menu at the top, and select Edit Bookmarks. You can then sort, rename, and delete them if you want from this window. However if you want to create a new folder you need to go to back up to Bookmarks, and select Show Bookmarks. Then you get the left-side bookmarks menu to appear and this is where you can create new bookmark folders. Which you can't do in the Edit Bookmarks window. Which is stoopid.

;)

----------

I've officially stopped using Chrome. Safari has Adblock Plus now and is insanely fast. Not to mention that Chrome unnecessarily activates the dedicated video card on my MacBook, such a power hog. The new Safari is just too good.

With Safari 8, Glims is unfortunately broken and unusable. But other plug-ins work fine, including the ad blockers.

You don't actually need AdBlock at all. Just install Ghostery, and Glimmer Blocker. Glimmer Blocker will block a ton of ads and spam in general, while Ghostery allows you to selectively allow/block what elements of a webpage you do want to see. Glimmer Blocker is configured in the Mac's System Preferences window, while Ghostery is configured in Safari Preferences (under extensions).

I recommend that when using Ghostery you set it to Enable Ghostrank (to allow it to track elements it blocks, nothing about your browsing habits is recorded), and then go under Blocking Options and Click Select all to make sure all the nasty stuff is blocked by default). Then click Save. Then you have the option of blocking Ghostery's default alert bubble. Open Ghostery option again and select the Advanced tab. Under Advanced Options uncheck the box next to Show alert bubble.

----------

It pains me to see anyone using Chrome on a Mac - Safari is SOO much better (though that wasn't always the case - especially during the Lion era).

But for those who like Chrome - use Chromium if you are jonesing to use Chrome so much. Chromium is Chrome with all of the tracking bits removed. It prevents Google from collecting info on your browsing habits. It is very speedy on it's own.

----------

Totally agree, which is why I use Opera. IMHO, Opera seems to have the best of both Safari and Firefox. Some complain about "performance" but I don't notice any issues. I just get a crash-free experience with all the features I want that will do what I need it to do when I need it to do it the way I want it to do it.

Opera has one of the worst iterations of bookmarks management I've ever seen. There isn't any bookmarks list - you get "blocks" in the Speed Dial page. Ugh. But I use Opera and Chromium at work and they are way better than IE when it comes to speed and privacy.

This is completely outrageous for apple to have popups to suggest you try an alternative when you open chrome or firefox. How come microsoft has to produce a version of windows that doesn't include Internet Explorer and windows media player at all and apple is allowed to force it upon you.

Evil bloody corporation.

They are not encouraging. They are forcing in some cases. I recently did a search and when i try to get the response from "discussions.apple.com" they told me this;

Unsupported Browser detected.

Announcement: Apple Support Communities has discontinued support for your current browser.

In order to provide the best platform for continued innovation, Apple Support Communities suggests using the latest version of Safari.

(Please remember to honor your company's IT policies before installing new software!)

I tried different browsers with the same result.
It scared me a little.

Apple, if you tray to force people to do your way you are gonna lose it.

Just one of those days where Firefox is taking up 1gb + for 5 or 6 tabs.

Close and re-open and back down to 350-400mb ... for a few minutes. It's weird that after the last FF update, videos playing in youtube NOT in full screen are choppy. In full screen it's fine. rMBP/2.4/8gb. This is the first time in a few years I'm contemplating giving up on my favorite browser.

A bit scary there. I have not seen this yet.
