This is sad.

Say what you want about Ive, Apple needs an extraordinary talent like him, and Cook correctly gave him all product authorities at Apple (I don't think he can work under any new boss apart from Jobs). Sadly he had proven himself not up to that. The design was nice but not practical. Now Apple boards - correctly again - questions is it worth it to pay him another $100M basically just to wall him off from competitors for a few years?

Ive should be still working at Apple, he shouldn't be given all the controls and most importantly, he should know he shouldn't. Sadly all these hadn't happened.

following his dream of a paperthin pro machine...
He was ahead of his time and chip technology. He made (even) the 27“ iMac thin early last decade accommodating intel space heater processors but it took 8 more years for the industry to come up with an SoC to run cool and quiet enough. Now that M chip just entered its second generation and there is still no 27“ iMac.

Nobody knows what he even was doing for Apple the past few years. This seems like a story that is a big nothingburger but is good clickbait for Apple rumor sites and places like The Verge. I‘m sure the ATP podcast will have a whole segment on it. 😴

Ugh. That's too bad. It seemed like their setup could have been a big win for customers, retaining Ive's great design input, but not having him there running the show, so we'd get less of form at the expense of function. But I can see how it didn't work out.

Jony Ive was Sr. VP of Design. He would have been responsible for evaluating and deciding on the keyboard implementation based on the thinness and reliability tradeoffs.

In the 2015 Apple Special Event, the butterfly keyboard was the first thing Jony talked about and how it defined the thinness of the new MacBook.
Wouldn’t the keyboard mess be on Tim Cook?… he is the CEO of the company. What are they paying him millions for anyway?

He couldn’t stand the ugliness of the new iPhones and MacBooks. The diagonal cameras setup was the last straw.

Ive is form over function. The new laptops that walk back work Jony Ive oversaw are Apple's greatest ever.
He never was one for form follows function. And to make it clear, the sole reason Ive had such success at Apple fell at the feet of my former boss, Steven P. Jobs. Ive was about to hand in his resignation when the merger happened, Steve was name special advisor and soon after when Steve got more authority he insisted on meeting the industrial design team to either replace them or make use of them.

Steve joked that he walked into a room filled with ideas that never became products and that's where he met Jony. They hit it off and the rest was history. Steve had a way of inspiring Jony and of course Steve had final say on all designs.

No one could replicate that kind of synergy and I don't blame Jony for seeking new beginnings. The man gave his life's work to Apple.

I hope Ive becomes a direct competitor and releases computers, phones, etc.

"Direct competitor" is highly unlikely, as modern-day Apple is more than just a phone and laptop company (chips, services, banking, etc). Even if he runs to Microsoft and starts designing their SurfaceBooks, I doubt we'd see many people switch, plus it would tarnish his brand. He can currently exit as one of Apple's "Greats". If he goes to a competitor he looks bitter.

I always thought Ive was a bit of pompous jerk from the way he carried himself in his presentations.

But I can appreciate that many of the most iconic and attractive apple products were from his era and believe much of the desirability of the brand came from that.

Wow! shocking news. This article actually makes me very sad. Love him or Hate him, he is behind Apple's success.
True, people here blatantly blame him for HWE Teams Failures, thermal constraint Macs, though designs are upgradable and ratified by the Product Managing Team, so blaming him for thermal failures at Apple, is a wrong move, designs may be thin, but pretty sure, they could be made thicker, Just like Jony designed Mac Pro 2019 (quite huge in comparison to it's predecessor), iPhone 8-11 Pro were thicker than their predecessors, MacBook Pro 2019 (whose designs were mostly confirmed in March2019 as per leaks) was thicker than it's predecessor, claiming now Macs are better is quite bad as its the game of semiconductors at Apple that has made them work better, not because Jony left Apple, Jony leaving Apple has really given us a terrible design since he left, May be I will be the only one who will miss him

Looking at the NYT article we can see why they parted
--------
When Mr. Ive left Apple in 2019 to start his own design firm, LoveFrom, the iPhone maker signed a multiyear contract with him valued at more than $100 million. That made Apple his firm’s primary client, people with knowledge of the agreement said.

The deal restricted Mr. Ive from taking on work that Apple found competitive and ensured that the designer would inform the development of future products, such as an augmented-reality headset that it is expected to ship next year, the people said.

In recent weeks, with the contract coming up for renewal, the parties agreed not to extend it. Some Apple executives had questioned how much the company was paying Mr. Ive and had grown frustrated after several of its designers left to join Mr. Ive’s firm. And Mr. Ive wanted the freedom to take on clients without needing Apple’s clearance, these people said.

---------
How can one continue to run a design firm if Apple decides anything he is working on is competitive?
appears to be the best time to split apart and move on.

Jony sucked. Such a no-talent. iMacs with screen edges so sharp they cut your hands. Keyboards for the "thinnuh" and "lightuh" laptops which malfunctioned. Macs with inadequate cooling. Trashcan Mac Pro. Stupid Touch Bar. Disappearing upgradeability year after year. Hockey puck mouse. Apple Watch as a fashion accessory. Overheating G4 Cube. HomePod. Rechargeable mouse you have to flip over on its back to recharge. Sorry, Jony is an overrated moron.

Remember: Steve set up Apple so nobody could overrule the great idiotic Jonathan Ive.

Function should be paramount, not form. Good riddance.

Johnny Ive's more recent work gave us butterfly keyboards and touch bars. Sometimes, a guy just needs to know when to retire. Glad Apple forced it along before more damage could be done.
He was designer, Not that guy who works on Keyboard Engineering, or who worked on the Idea of TouchBar

Not surprising. Ive's designs were pivotal in refreshing Apple's image but his absolute insistence on form over function eventually became a liability.
Ivev didnt get the G4 Jet...bye.. Tim bought it..Back to the drawing boards
