Just for reference, this is the sort of monitors the new Apple Pro Display XDR is set to compete with:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...m_318g_31_1_true_4k_monitor_4096x2160_10.html

They will sell these to entertainment studios mainly and these won't care about having to pay for a stand for $999, they will probably get the VESA adapter or maybe even get custom adapters to fit exactly what they need so the all outrage about the stand price is ridiculous when you put things in context.

It's like Sunday drivers feeking outraged at the price price of Formula 1 tyres as if they could use the Formula 1 to its full potential in the first place.

Yah, and see the four fans on the back of that TVLogic monitor? Just goes to show you that these beasts generate heat, which explains the need for a huge heat sink on the Pro Display!

...and buy what? That's the problem.

As for price comparisons, as far as I can tell, the entry level system (we don't know the price of afterburner/Vega II/28 core stuff that they were bragging about at WWDC yet...) is swings/roundabout with the iMac Pro (which costs $1000 less and comes with $1000 of display.

Basically, what Apple is saying is, if you want a moderately powerful, general-purpose, desktop that isn't a thermally limited, non-expandable all-in-one or unnecessarily-small-form-factor Mac Mini - go fish unless price really is no object.

We'll sell you a Smart 4x4 or a Bugatti but nothing in between...

User have been asking for a "headless" iMac for 10+ years. I suspect it will never happen

I feel like a lot of the people who were previously complaining that Apple didn't make a computer that was truly aimed at professionals are the same people who are complaining about how expensive the new Mac Pro is.

The new design is ugly as hell, and this does not come from a PC hateboy who custom-modded his lame box with LEDs but from a long-time computer user who has also seen the G4 Cube and the cylindrical Mac Pro (among others).

Ugh. I don't know how much simpler I can explain this. What made the Cheese Grater G5 awesome wasn't the cheese grater grill in the front.:rolleyes::rolleyes: It's the ease of opening the chassis for upgrading. Say it with me, Apple. Modular, that's the word of the day.:D

This is just another sealed box with a holes in the front.

Form should follow function.

Look at its design a little closer. The whole outer case is a sleeve that slips off for 180 degree accessibility.

Personally, I think it looks cool. But, in case anyone might think it's ugly:

I'm a little surprised they didn't just bundle the monitor and stand together - the way most monitors are sold - and just go with $5999 for the base price, $6999 with the special matte option. Then - again, as with most monitors - if you wanted a VESA mount you'd pay for that additionally on top of the base price.

I guess I would've expected the PR people to say "justified or not, people are gonna howl about the $999 stand" and eliminate the issue before it even got started.

As to the cheese grater design... it seems like an intentional, obvious homage to Apple's last widely-loved Pro, which does seem like a smart business decision.

Look at its design a little closer. The whole outer case is a sleeve that slips off for 180 degree accessibility.

Which means if your computer is in a rack or sitting against a desk, you have to take the whole computer out to service it. Versus virtually every other PC design that opens on one side because the motherboard is directly on a wall, not the middle. (Dell Precisions are the exception I think, but the right access is just to a drive backplane)

1) Cheese Grater
2) Trash Can
3) Potato Grater
4) Ash Tray << You will see, I predicted it.

No joking but I'd like to see a premium fish bowl water cooled workstation.

Intel quote "There are two separate claims being made by Intel, so let’s take them in order. First, Intel claims that AMD erred by not making use of the appropriate optimizations for its own platform and that if it had done so, performance on the comparative Intel platform improves by 30 percent, from 9.68ns/day to 12.65ns/day. That’s not enough to match Rome, but it’s still a large gain.

Second, Intel claims that its Cascade Lake-AP CPUs will offer much more competitive performance against Rome. The Xeon Platinum 9242 (48C/96T, 2.3GHz-3.8GHz clock) scores a 19.9 compared with AMD’s 19.6, while the Xeon Platinum 9282 (56C/112T, 2.6GHz – 3.8GHz) scores a 24.16, 1.23x faster than AMD’s Epyc Rome platform."

Hmmmm interesting!!!!!!

When Apple appears to be prioritizing form people complain about function. When Apple does the reverse people still complain. And most of the people complaining about this machine will never own one.

So true. I’m not sure how big of a market we are loosing in the peeps that can’t afford, but want, but don’t need, and definitely won’t buy because it doesn’t have award winning lines. But I think we’ll be ok.

I can’t afford this thing, but if I could, it’d be going on top of the desk no question. In view!

This design is over 15 years old and still looks better...

Who cares, these sit under the desk or in some dark corner. It does not matter what they look like to anyone that cares about performance.

Nope. You're arguing with somebody who recently was responsible for buying a bunch of dual-socket workstations for work. HP wanted 40% more than Lenovo.

And you really haven't figured out how desktops are made, including Apple: Intel comes out with a reference design, which we call Purley in this generation. The usual Taiwanese ODMs modify this design with the logos, Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Foxconn, then do the manufacturing. There is very little difference in quality in major brands since they're made by the same people.

Yup. And don't even get me started on the scale at which we buy workstations... However, no need to posture about such things. Intel reference, blah, blah. Yeah, the cheap clones do that. Apple, HP, sometimes Dell, and others engineer their own (based on Intel specs).

The proof is in reality. Go ahead, anyone, walk on over to Lenovo.com, or Dell.com, or HP.com and customize yourself a Xeon based workstation identical (or as close as possible) to the entry level new Mac Pro...

I did this yesterday at Hp.com (a Z4) - $7200. I just did it a few minutes ago at Lenovo.com (a P720) - $6360 (sans a few features that just aren't available from them, like 10gbe)... The reality is that capable workstations are expensive, and Apple now has a solid offering at an outstanding price point of $5999.

No, they are using professional level mastering monitors like the Sony BVM X300. A +$30K piece of equipment.

https://pro.sony/ue_US/products/broadcastpromonitors/bvm-x300-v2

Apple's new monitor is little more than an expensive FALD LCD monitor with wide gamut + HDR support, and the market has had such monitors for around $2K at least a year now, with newer versions coming this fall.

I completely understand the value of the display. However, it's still an extremely niche market.

If you find it to be over engineered and absurdly priced then you're not the target market and have no need for it. As the name implies, it is intended for professional users (people who earn a living creating special effects, editing film, etc).

We prefer the term visual effects. :)

Special effects are the practical effects shot on set.

I'll say it again here: The design of the new Mac Pro's grille triggers both my son's and my daughter's trypophobia.

My daughter cannot stand to look at it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say, but I find the vent pattern hideous as well.

Another thing I realize is that this thing is the same size as the old tower (without the dual drives)!

I wish (i know, NOT happening) Apple would get into the "classics" game and give us:

1. An old tower with just updated TB3, USB3, and current processors for the vacant ~$2,500 starting price point.
2. An updated 2012 cMBP with added TB3 and current processors
3. An iPhone SE and or 6 with a headphone jack

After all, the old iPad designs (3 of them!) and iPhone 8 are still kicking around (which in my mind shows Apple's focus-shift away from the Mac).

I also wonder how much the Tube will start going for once this beast is released.

I feel like a lot of the people who were previously complaining that Apple didn't make a computer that was truly aimed at professionals are the same people who are complaining about how expensive the new Mac Pro is.

The term "professional" has expanded greatly overt the past decade. So it's entirely reasonable to say that this machine does and doesn't suit the needs of professionals, depending on how you want to define it.
