Apple today announced plans to hold its annual iPhone-centric event on Monday, September 9 at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. The event is set to start at 10:00 a.m., and select members of the media have been invited to attend.

This year's event will see Apple unveil the iPhone 16 lineup, new Apple Watch models, and the AirPods 4, plus we'll get official launch dates for iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and Apple's other software updates.

All four of the new iPhones are expected to have the customizable Action Button and a new Capture Button for taking photos that will have built-in gestures, such as a swipe for zooming in and out or a soft press for autofocus. The Capture Button will be on the right side of the devices below the power button.

Apple is also adding an A18 chip to all models, so the entire iPhone 16 lineup will be capable of supporting the Apple Intelligence features that are coming in iOS 18. No other major new features are expected for the standard iPhone 16 models, but the Pro lineup will get an increase in display size, going from 6.1 and 6.7 inches to 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively, for the Pro and Pro Max. Both models will also include the 5x Telephoto zoom option that was exclusive to the Pro Max last year.

For the Apple Watch, the standard Series 10 is expected to feature a thinner design with a larger display, but the change won't be radical. Apple also plans to refresh the Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Ultra, and we could see new health features such as sleep apnea detection and blood pressure monitoring, but it is not yet entirely clear if Apple will have them ready in time for this year's launch.

There are two models of the AirPods 4 coming, one that's a direct successor to the current AirPods 3 and one that's a step up with support for Active Noise Cancellation at a non-Pro price.

Apple plans to stream the fall event live on its website, on YouTube, and through the Apple TV app. For those unable to watch, MacRumors will be providing full event coverage on MacRumors.com and the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

Year over year upgrading is pretty silly at this point, unless you have a ton of money you don’t know what to do with 😁
You have think about everything though. When you trade in your iPhone to upgrade to the new iPhone, every single year that you don’t upgrade, the trade-in value of your old iPhone decreases.

Now, the trade-in value lost is maybe say $150/year? So, you’re certainly saving money by not upgrading yearly, but it’s not as much as you might think it is without considering depreciation in your current iPhone.

Year over year upgrading is pretty silly at this point, unless you have a ton of money you don’t know what to do with 😁

There are also people upgrading with a ton of money who know exactly what to do with it. And knowing what to do with it is precisely why some people have the money in the first place.

So long as you're getting half the price when selling/trading in after a year, it's really not that big of a deal.
First off, I am not saying people SHOULDN'T spend money constantly to have the latest iPhone. People should spend money as they want. But the idea of NOT upgrading every year means that you have more money. An iPhone is a depreciating item. It will be worth less tomorrow than it is today. You will never be better off or "even" on it. Therefore if you purchase one, pay it off and then don't spend your money on another one for a while, you can use that money for other things. For example, I have an iPhone 13 Pro. I haven't had payments on my phone in several years. I have used the money that I would have spent on iPhone payments on other things. So $50/mo for two years is $1,200 I have been able to do whatever I want with VS someone spending that money to have the latest phone. To me that doesn't fit the "not that big of a deal" to most Americans. I just think most Americans are used to monthly costs and so they don't put thought into other options or what they are actually spending.

If you are a photographer, I can see that but I was speaking about most folks.
If you are using "photographer" in the sense of someone who likes to take photos on their phone, yes. If you are saying it in the sense of someone who does work or a hobby as that profession, then no.

Not saying the iPhone camera isn't super helpful. Many times people don't need more than their iPhone to snap a quick memory. In fact as you stated most folks just take photos from their phones and are happy. I also agree that for those people, the upgrades year over year aren't big enough for them to probably notice. But a photographer in a real workflow isn't using an iPhone, so it isn't applicable to them.

More Context:
The photos off an iPhone are fine when looking at them on your iPhone. They are fine to post on social media. But if you want to use them for other real photography purposes, a photographer would not use a 5mm x 4mm (largest one) sensor size on an iPhone VS a ~36mm x ~24mm sensor on a normal camera, its literally 5-7 times larger which means that much more detail/data. Any ICL camera from anytime in the past decade vastly outperforms the iPhone.

I just hope the Ultra 3 has the SpO2 stuff built back in. I'm not giving up my Ultra first gen if it doesn't. I track it nightly and during the day (although use a pulse oximeter during the day) due to recent lung issues. Not holding my breath (pun intended) though.

It's go time!

My theory:

September 9, 2024 = 9/9/2024

Add all numbers: 9+9+2+0+2+4=26

On that day at 10am, the moon is at 35% illumination

35% of 26 is 9.1

On that day at 10am, the moon is 247,456 miles away from the Earth

247,456+9.1=247,465.1

Now let's decipher each digit to the left of the decimal point in 247,465.1

Tim Cook's favorite number is 7
2+7=9
The ninth letter in the alphabet is i

Eddy Cue's favorite number is 12
4+12=16
Sixteenth letter is p

Craig Federighi's favorite number is 1
7+1=8
Eighth letter is h

John Ternus's favorite number is 11
4+11=15
Fifteenth letter is o

Jeff Williams's favorite number is 8
6+8=14
Fourteenth letter is n

Phil Schiller refused to say, therefore
5 remains 5
Fifth letter is e

Put all letters together, we get iPhone

On that day by 10am, the moon will have entered the sixteenth lunar mansion

iPhone 16 is confirmed!
You Sir / Madam have too much time on your hands! Bravo 👏

Traded in my series 6 a month ago & using my emergency series 3. Think I’ll notice quite a boost in performance up to the X. Maybe even the UW 3 if new design

So focus is on Apple Intelligence, to nobody's surprise.

Although, I do see a bit of Siri in there. But, then again, that's also implied with Apple Intelligence and iOS 18. So, again, as expected, no surprises.

I guess the biggest reveal for me will be an all-new Watch with Apple Intelligence. Like, surely, Apple is doing something with AI for Watch too?

I last bought AirPods in 2021 and an iPhone in 2022 (spring release of the 2021 model). I am due for an upgrade. I always watch the events no matter what, but they're more fun when you're actually planning on purchasing one of the products (and in this case, two).

Still hoping for an AirPods Max upgrade 🙏

I used to live for their annual event.

Now? Kinda meh... I must be getting older.

I was supposed to go iPhone 15 last year, but about the same time as release I had an incident with my 13 Pro and apple replaced it under apple care. It was a new phone with 100% battery. So I've been rocking it for the past year and unless something crazy is coming-out of the 16, I may just skip 16 as well and wait on 17.

I usually upgrade the phone and the watch at the same time, another reason I didn't upgrade the phone last year was the bad rumor about a black Apple Watch ultra. So, I am hoping for a black Apple Watch ultra to be released this year. If its not, I may go ahead and pull the trigger on one, whatever the color might be. Black or not I'll likely wrap it in a rubber bumper so the color really isn't that important. All of that said, my Apple Watch 7 is still at 83% battery health. Its not as good as it used to be, but it still fits my needs. I basically only charge it when I'm showering and getting ready for work. I sleep with it on.

For all iPhones sold outside the EU the lightning port will be reintroduced!
Honestly, test it outside the EU first, let's see if it makes any sense at all.
Of course Apple won't wait long to introduce AI in the EU, they certainly want to sell new iPhones in their second most important market!
It's certainly going to be an odd launch if the bulk of iPhones 16 AI features will have an asterisk saying "*Only available in the following territories" and not list the EU.

That kind of headline will steer a lot of EU buyers away from pre-ordering which is the best time to sell new smartphones.

I hate to hype things up but iPhones 16 and whatever level of AI Apple has ready at launch will have a huge impact on Apple's future.

Fingers crossed it all works out for Apple and consumers (including those in the EU)!

Huh? Well I don't have a ton of extra money but I usually upgrade every year because the way iPhones retain their value either through private sales or Apple/carrier trade-in, is insane. Most years I get about 50% back of what I paid the previous year if not more for my device which I then put towards the new model, making the monthly payment about $30 give or take depending on the model I go with, storage capacity, Apple Care, etc. That's really not bad to have the latest and greatest every year. Did you just emerge from under a rock since the year 2012 or something before all the financing and carrier subsidies were an option? Because that's the only way your comment makes any sense these days... It's actually quite affordable and accessible to be on an annual upgrade cycle.

I had my iPhone 7+ until I upgraded to the 14 Pro Max. Not sure why people have to update every year or two. The devices now are so close in features despite the marginal speed bump. I guess keep with the Joneses.
most people are upgrading because of the camera- also - you can do a no cost swap with most of the carriers.

So many people act like the only way to obtain an iPhone is to pay full price outright in one go.
