Wow, that's pretty dismissive. Any particular reason why Apple wouldn't say "Leopard will be released on September 25th, and all Macs sold starting today will come with a voucher for Leopard"?

I think it is entirely possible. If they announce a new model, they know that a lot of users will wait until it comes with Leopard, unless it comes with a voucher of some sort.

Yes, it is likely that about a month ahead, they will announce 10.5's date
and will announce that anyone buying a new system within that ~ 1 month
window before 10.5 ships will qualify for a cheap upgrade (30-50$) price
on the OS. It would not be the first time.

The iPod is due an update, but not this time. The wording specifically says Mac products and the iPod doesn't come under the "Mac" umbrella/ :)

I'd be very surprised to see new iPods.

If you follow what Steve Jobs said about OS X on the iPod, surely it will eventually merge into the Mac range in some form.

Would you call iLife a Mac product? Yes because it's Mac software.
Would you call iTunes or Safari Mac products? Still probably, even though they now both run on Windows.
Would you call the iPhone or :apple:tv Mac products? Well, they both contain forms of OS X so I guess they should be Macs. Anyway, both are peripherals that whilst working with Windows, are also designed to work with a Mac like iTunes that powers them.
Would you call a new OS X powered iPod a Mac product?

:) Everyone is talking about the iMac, but what about the iPod. It's due for another refresh, particularly as Christmas draws closer.

The OPs seem to indicate the August 7 announcement is limited to Macs.

I'd be happy if they were to release DVDSP 5 since it was not included with the rest of the new Final Cut Studio.

Those images have been around for years and every now again someone finds them a posts them.

When I first saw them I went "wow", but I agree it's almost getting as boring as "PowerBook G5s next Tuesday". In saying that, nice to see an Apple special event scheduled for a Tuesday again. There hasn't been enough since the Intel switch.

As for those designs, it would indeed make a cool design for the iMac, but not for another 3 years or more. First off it would be extremely difficult to get close to making them like that with current technology. Even if you did, they would cost a small fortune I'm guessing.

Instead, give me something similar to the current iMac/ACDs with more RAM (or at least more room for expansion), bigger Hard Drives, better graphics (and possibly resolutions), more sockets and Blu Ray (even just as an option). That's what people are really screaming out for now. I just wait another day or two before this and/or other topics drift to "What I think they'll change in specs" or "What I'd like them to change" posts. You know the ones, where people state lists of specs such as 12TB of storage and Xeon processors for $100.

maybe they will replace the Mini with the Cube? remember: Cube was never discontinued, it was just "put on ice". That would allow Apple to move to desktop-CPU's and hard-drives while also giving the machine some expandability (one slot). That way the capabilities of the machine would go up while price would remain reasonable.

If the mini and 17" get discontinued, there is no way Apple is going to write off the low-end altogether. Mini sales may have been bad but as many forum members point out they have encouraged many switchers to buy better macs second time round. A cube-type experiment makes much more sense for the long-awaited mac midi tower and would appease the media center mac crowd (altho apple clearly has other plans for them so who knows).

I had expected that Apple would want to roll out updates individually to make the most of the iphone buzz at the moment, having put them off for so long, but a desktop-wide rehaul, with the reduced price xeons in the mac pro, the much-touted newform imac and a brand new budget mac would probably garner more press than the sum of its parts over consecutive tuesdays.

Well I am glad I did not buy my iMac last week. I had the order in and at the last minute I realized that I could not pay with 2 credit cards that do not have the same Billing address.

In the end i told my self that i would wait until the 7th since most of the rumors
where hinting at that day. Hopefully the wait was worth it. :apple:

I hope so too, for your sake!

I hope they release the long wante mini tower, eventhough I don't need it. New video options for my Mac Pro would be nice as well!

and..... eventhough it should be a mac only event, I'm hoping for a new iPod to replace my stolen one!

This is brilliant! Can't wait. 100% positive this is due to the new iMac, especially with the "Mac related only" tagline. :D

THe new iMac is going to be gloss black with chrome trimmings! remember you heard it from me 1st. It's going to look like a big iPhone.... with a kick stand of course

With all the mockups out there, I haven't seen one iPhoneMac that has left me anywhere near "smitten". Apple is definitely more creative than taking an existing product, turning it sideways and bolting a stand to it. :D

I love these threads, because you see these outrageous expectations for an announcement and then you get to see all the negative, disappointing comments afterwards.

People are really expecting updates to iPods, iMacs, and the Mini's... lol

I think all you people underestimate the power of the mini (okay...not all)

To get rid of it IS like getting rid of all the elementary-middle school students who use it. It is a cheap (or was) machine that has enough power for media, fun, and school. No middle schooler will fork up $1,000 for an iMac $500 for a mini is much better. If not mini, they would all go for dell or HP.

LUV UR MAC MINI
AND IT WILL LUV U!

:apple::apple::apple:

At first I really began to believe they were headed for killing the mini,
but the more I think about the fact that they are killing the 17" iMac,
the more I think they cannot kill the mini, for the reasons you cite.
However, I do think the long term strategy is to fold the aTV and mini
together. It seems unlikely that we've reached that point yet. I do
think the mini gets one more miserable go round here.

The main announcements are likely to be the kickass keyboard
and iMacs, anything else (minis, laptops) will see extremely minor tweaks
if anything. No doubt the design of the iMac will lead to new desktop
displays sometime soon, though maybe not next week. I doubt
we're going to get a leopard date here. Apple's gonna draw out the
entire rest of the year with dripping after dripping of new stuff, spaced
a month apart. By the conference in January, the stock price is gonna
be sky high unless they totally mess up some of these products
(and yes, they are capable of that).

Apart from the iPod, I mean.

With a week to go, and NO firm specs on a new iMac (much less pics of a new CPU design), I'm starting to worry about seeing Mac hardware updates prior to Leopard.

At best we've got a keyboard which could be:

shipping next week, -or-
a prototype that won't ever see the outside of the development lab

Keyboard is extremely likely to be in the mix Tuesday. But they would
not call together an "event" for that alone.

YES!
Well get an update on Apple Retail and iTunes Music Store market share!!!!

...

New iMacs, theyll ship in two months with Leopard...

My bet:
  • New iMac (with new keyboard)
  • New Mac Mini (with same design as AppleTV and Airport base)

Something like that, yeah. I say a merger of the wireless
station/mini/dvr/aTV at a lowish price is in the offing... just a matter or when
they manage to consummate such a merger.

They are definitely going to introduce the new iMac and maybe a new thinner MacBook and a replacement for the Mac Mini. I believe the Mac mini replacement will be a new gaming Mac; little bigger than the current Mac Mini and more powerful. The whole desktop lineup will be powerful enough for gaming.:apple:

Now that would be verrry interesting if Mac mini also evolves to a game
console. Verrry interesting. Could they possibly pull that off without people
knowing about it yet, though?

The iMac, dead? Please. It's the most succesful all-in-one desktop on the planet, and certainly a cultural icon. The iMac will not go, and there won't be a product called just Mac. It's too confusing.

I'm not sure what'll happen to Mac mini, but I hope it gets the long awaited 64-bit speed bump it deserves.

As for iLife, I hope it's true. I'm a heavy user of iMovie and iWeb myself, so I'm curious as to what's become of them.

I honestly feel that this won't be iMac. I feel this because the iMac was updated 329 days ago and the iMac site still says "The new iMacs. Faster. Bigger. Brighter." And it says "...every new iMac."

So, they're suggesting a model that's almost a year old (even with speed bumps) is new. If Apple doesn't update the web site by Tuesday, I don't think we'll be seeing anything having to do with the iMac.

Again, it could just be the new Mac Socks ( :p ) or Mac Pro birthday party.

  • Leopard - We will get an update on where it is now and when to expect its release
  • Mac sales update to let us know how each model is doing.
  • New iMac - 20" and 24" definitely; 17" not so sure.
  • Mac mini - we find out its fate which will be updated, redesigned, or discontinued
  • new Mac - if Mac mini and 17" iMac are discontinued then I expect something to fill in the gap they left behind
  • iWork - I am expecting a demo with it going on sale immediately.
  • iLife - I think this will get a demo at MWSF because it (iWeb), the .mac service, and the iPhone compliment each other. The .mac service is going to get an update before MWSF because it needs to provide the back-to-mac service for Leopard, but waiting until MWSF to demonstrate iLife will give Apple that much more time to work on the .mac service, iWeb, and iPhone.

Agree all except Leopard. They will be mum about it because you don't want
to plant the idea of waiting three more months to buy a computer in anyone's
head. Leopard and ipods will get talked about in due time, after the sales
figures from the end of tax-free days are in, after the back-to-school
special is over, and after the initial imac surge is over... circa October 1-10
you will hear about ipods and finally hear about leopard... at a time
point when they can begin to guestimate their Q3 take.
The most you'll hear about the OS on Tuesday is that "10.4.final will
be released on xyz day".
