What about a merge of the Apple TV and the Mini into something new?

Perhaps a super Apple TV that runs the OS too?

I think so. I just doubt their ability to have that ready right away.
This does appear to be the long term vision. To whatever extent
they can cram features (dvr, game console, etc.) into some little
brick that costs 300-400, it *could* sell really well. I'm just
not convinced they are ready for this yet. The damn thing can't even
order off the itunes store now.

new imac features - wish list

i think it would be cool if the new imacs had:
e-SATA ports
Multi-touch screen capability
Built-in Blu-ray drive

I honestly feel that this won't be iMac. I feel this because the iMac was updated 329 days ago and the iMac site still says "The new iMacs. Faster. Bigger. Brighter." And it says "...every new iMac."

So, they're suggesting a model that's almost a year old (even with speed bumps) is new. If Apple doesn't update the web site by Tuesday, I don't think we'll be seeing anything having to do with the iMac.

Again, it could just be the new Mac Socks ( :p ) or Mac Pro birthday party.

I don't think they can not update the iMac line. They cannot wait until
January. And they would not call an event for just a speed bump.
If I'm wrong that would be pretty stupid of apple to put together an event
like this, just so that their stock can slide a few bucks after people see
that there's no design changes anywhere. Instead, I think we are about
to see a six month period like no other, in which there are a lot of rollouts.
Jobs wants to see that share price keep going upupup.

Maybe the whole "DeskMac" rumors will come back to life?

I like that name. Macbook tells you that it's a notebook. DeskMac tells you that it's a desktop Mac. Or I could just be nuts.

Maybe they'll reintroduce the 'Performa' moniker.

lawlz.

I don't believe e-SATA is ready enough for apple to mainstream it yet, more than likely next revision will see e-SATA, and the built-in blu ray, although it would be awesome, seems really farfetched... especially since they would have to substantially increase the price of the mac, which I believe they are trying to keep them at similar price points.

For some reason I am doubting that they'd make their desktop line touchscreen, don't have much to back that up it just doesnt seem like something they'd do.

I'm not saying I don't want a new iMac. I waant as much as the next guy. But I'm saying, the peices aren't fitting:

  • Apple's site still says "new" for a product that 329 days old
  • If Apple wanted this to be a big evet, the would have booked at Moscone

But, you never know. :)

2007 is the year of Mac.

That will never happen because the term "Mac" is used by almost everybody as a reference to an Apple computer.Changing the iMac to simply "Mac" would create consumer confusion.

Well if "almost everyone" is currently referring to Apple Computers as simply "Mac" anyway, changing the name from iMac to Mac is hardly gonna make much difference is it? The only difference will be that "almost everyone" will now be kind of right when referring to a newly renamed iMac. That's strange logic you have there.

The iMac, dead? Please. It's the most succesful all-in-one desktop on the planet, and certainly a cultural icon. The iMac will not go, and there won't be a product called just Mac. It's too confusing.

I'm not sure what'll happen to Mac mini, but I hope it gets the long awaited 64-bit speed bump it deserves.

As for iLife, I hope it's true. I'm a heavy user of iMovie and iWeb myself, so I'm curious as to what's become of them.

I'm talking about the name... See above post.

Quad Core iMacs Have Got To Be Next

I really believe that this is the point where the iMac separates its relationship with the mobile Macs and goes Core 2 Quad. This business of the iMac being a glorified MacBook Pro with a bigger screen and hard drive has got to end. Apple really needs to establish the iMac as a much more powerful choice than what the mobile Macs can deliver.

The same logic and new pricing makes me also believe the Mac Pro line will go all 8 core next.

With Harpertown coming in at the same price as the old Woodies, Quad Core Mac Pro's days have got to be numbered. Even the Clovertowns look long in the tooth when compared to the 3.16GHz Harpertown coming up later this year. While 160MHz may not look like much of a speed improvement on the surface, when looked at in the context of the 8 core environs it totals 1.28GHz more collective power capacity than the 3GHz model.

25.28 GHz vs. 24 GHz. But I don't know if this is a difference any of us will perceive. Getting into the bragging rights area of computing rather than the practical differences.

If I'm wrong and iMacs don't go Quad Core next week, that will blow my mind.

Any thoughts on why the invite shows a rollercoaster? Is it just because Apple is in a roller coaster ride as a company (see it's stock), or is the iMac design roller coaster inspired? ...:apple:

I'm thinking... Color-changing case! Evokes roller coasters and the original iMac.

That's bad, since you can't use Windows to check Apple-related news and rumors.

Why ever not? I'm using windows right now!

Excited

Hey guys being in Scotland I am joining this thread way late. Have not read through everyone so if I repeat someone else I am sorry.

I think it must be the iMac what else could it be. Ipods are rumoured but as this is mac related only then obviously they cant be so, yet.

Its been a long time coming I only hope it ships with free leapord upgrade when it does ship and I hope it ships immediately from announcment I would hate for Jobs to say "here is the new iMac and it ships in October" not something they usually do with this kinda product but we have seen it done with :apple:tv and the iPhone.

I cant see how many of you dont think it is the iMac in my opinion (which may not count for much) I think it is a dead cert.

That will never happen because the term "Mac" is used by almost everybody as a reference to an Apple computer.Changing the iMac to simply "Mac" would create consumer confusion.

Although...

I seem to recall a ton of "That will never happen" posts when the rumours surfaced about changing the iBook/Powerbook names to MB/MBP, and it ended up happening (and the sky didn't fall).

Anyone ever wonder if Apple even intended on having an August 7th event? I mean it's been a rumor for the longest time. We all knew the date like it was a planned conference and this invite from Apple was only ever a confirmation. Even then, the invite was a few phone calls and word got around.

You think Apple had an exec meeting and someone asked, "So Steve, what will we be seeing at the August 7th event?"
Steve: "Excuse me, the what?"
Exec: "August 7th...we have new iMacs coming or something, don't we?"
Steve: "Where on earth..what? I've been dealing with iPhones, Leopard and lawsuits every day; when did this iMac issue come about? Get me Jonny Ive."

We should almost name it the MacRumorsWorld Conference 2007.

Correct. I can't believe people are still selling the "imac is going to become 'mac'" line. That would be stupid because 1) "mac" is the generic term for any apple computer, and 2) the imac name is iconic at this point. The reason "ibook" was dropped was to get the word "mac" in to every apple product. Guess what? It's already in "imac."

New imacs are guaranteed. I hope it's more than that, though, because all 3 apple desktop lines are waaaay overdue for an update.

Did you read my post?

I said most people refer to a Macintosh computer as a Mac.This included the Mac Pro,iMac,MacBook,MacBook Pro etc.

If Apple were to call the iMac simply Mac it would confuse consumers.

For example :

At a party or gathering
Person A : I just bought a new Dell
Person B : I have a Mac
Person A : Oh? What kind do you have ?
Person B : I have (insert kind of Mac )
Person A : Ya but arn't they expensive ?

I hear this kind of conversation ALL the time.

What if apple, dropped everything! and made one super computer that you could take components off of and make a laptop, and then put it back together, and you have a desktop... ;)

Just kidding.

Anyways, I hope apple will release the new imacs on Aug. 7th, instead of previewing them to us, and then releasing them later with Leopard.

I seem to recall a ton of "That will never happen" posts when the rumours surfaced about changing the iBook/Powerbook names to MB/MBP, and it ended up happening (and the sky didn't fall).

Yeah..but that was a switch from an 'i' to a 'mac'. This would be eliminating the i and just having the mac.

Switcher: "Oh hey, what kind of computer is that?"
User: "A Mac"
Switcher: "Nice, which model?"
User: "The Mac...."

Granted I would love for it to be called the Macintosh again. That would be an improvement over the current switch in the naming scheme which would result in the new "MacMac" on 8/7. I should mention that I personally believe it will remain as the iMac, if it will be targeted towards the same market.

does anyone think that apple will release a highly expandable, affordable desktop tower? maybe used for games or something. i think there will be mac game announcement there too

Erm... what was the Mac Pro called before the name change? Oh yes. PowerMac. So, Mac was already in that name but it was still changed. Another one here with flawed and crazy logic.

You didn't really think that one through either did you?

I have thought this also. An iMac with tower seems viable because obvious competition is Vista. It is geared for multi media being optimised for tv viewing and recording. A lot of £900 plus units now ship with tv card installed. Gaming is also an area Apple want to get into so obvious upgrading of graphics cards would require a tower of somekind to keep the slim lines of the display. Add this with sound cards. installed memory card readers. upgrading to blu ray in future. etc I think it would destroy the lines of the part of the mac that is on your desk therefore I think a tower is the answer. And what a sexy tower it would be.

I dont really like the sound of a tower and I am only saying here that it should not be discounted

Yeah, I read your post. You actually said "Apple Computer" not "Macintosh Computer". Let me try to explain again. If "most people" currently refer to ANY Apple Computer as a "Mac", then wouldn't you say that the current naming scheme has done nothing to alleviate consumer confusion? Since as you point out, "the term "Mac" is used by almost everybody as a reference to an Apple computer."

Do you understand what I'm saying here?

Yes I understand you :)

That's why there is no Macintosh specifically called "Mac"

I can guarantee you come August 7th you will see a new "iMac"
