Apple Event August 7th

My guess - the iMac is going to be repositioned as a high-end product in the top tier along with the Mac Pro. The Mac Mini is probably going to go away, essentially replaced by the AppleTV and iPhone. And a new entry level Mac will be introduced at the sub-$1000 price point.

Mac Pro $2499+
iMac $1499-$2499
New Mac $999-$1499

That would be a very stupid move by them. Apple is not going to gain market share by increasing prices on their already successful products. Instead if anything they would want to bring in more people by offering a new line to fill the gap between the Mac mini and the iMac.

This is Madness!

No, THIS. IS. Oh, forget it...

Oh, and who cares what they call it? How about we just get some updates? :D

Also, yesterday I was thinking about how much thinner the iMac could be and I thought about the MBP. It could be that thin... if not a bit thinner. take the screen half and flip it over so it faced out when closed (like a tablet), subtract the room needed for keyboard and trackpad, and boom, thin iMac.

Of course the screen sizes would have to be larger, but really I think it's possible.

Wouldn't prices for iMacs dip considerably before August 7th, then? And wouldn't that be the confirmation that Apple will be releasing a new line of iMacs?

Don't forget some way to get the heat out. In the notebooks the orientation helps to get heat out through the KB.

Yeah, I read your post. You actually said "Apple Computer" not "Macintosh Computer". Let me try to explain again. If "most people" currently refer to ANY Apple Computer as a "Mac", then wouldn't you say that the current naming scheme has done nothing to alleviate consumer confusion? Since as you point out, "the term "Mac" is used by almost everybody as a reference to an Apple computer."

Do you understand what I'm saying here?

Apple does and has made several types of computers, only one line of which is a Mac. There was an Apple, Apple ][, //gs, LISA, Mac, Newton, iPod, :apple:TV (bastard child Mac), iPhone (they're not admitting it's a Mac yet...) all of which run different OS's.

Mac refers to one line of hardware running the Mac OS.

That's true, I didn't consider heat. I was moreso speculating as to how thin it could be. I remember the iMac G4 intro and hearing that they wanted to have it behind the screen but it wasn't feasible at the time because of heat. The current iMac did what the G4 wanted to do. Who knows what Steve has planned next.

I do like the idea of merging the Mac Mini/:apple:tv But doubt that it will happen (yet).

I have thought this also. An iMac with tower seems viable because obvious competition is Vista. It is geared for multi media being optimised for tv viewing and recording. A lot of £900 plus units now ship with tv card installed. Gaming is also an area Apple want to get into so obvious upgrading of graphics cards would require a tower of somekind to keep the slim lines of the display. Add this with sound cards. installed memory card readers. upgrading to blu ray in future. etc I think it would destroy the lines of the part of the mac that is on your desk therefore I think a tower is the answer. And what a sexy tower it would be.

I dont really like the sound of a tower and I am only saying here that it should not be discounted

Uuuurgh.... Must this be brought up EVERY time ;) A glance through the Macrumor archives shows just how many times this very topic is brought up... Done, dusted, finito... iMac, all-in-one (as it'll stay). Potential mini upgrade or indeed, replacement due, or not.

No big upgradable tower. (They want you to throw away a perfectly good monitor to replace the CPU or upgrade the graphics card. More money in it.):(

Stop the madness... has anyone bothered to take a moment and read todays NYT... It has nothing to do with any iMac intro but the fact that Apple is going to break up into three seperate businesses. The New York Times online has said that Apple will become three.. iphones, macs, ipods. The meeting Tuesday 8/7th is for Wall Street types.. nothing more as I read it.. sorry to burst your bubble.....

I just read the NYT online and found nothing supporting what you said. You need to provide a link.

I see your point. I still disagree, though.

I believe the Apple peripherals - iPod, iPhone, and AppleTV are what Apple is positioning as entry-level products. And they're counting on the halo-effect to entice new customers to shell out more money for their computers.

In your defense, I could have mixed up the iMac and the New Mac. Perhaps the New Mac will fill in the gap below the Mac Pro. It's just that hearing all of these rumors about a metal enclosure and new keyboard for the iMac makes me think they're going to reposition it as a higher-end model.

It's not as if the proposed new keyboard would be reserved solely for the new iMac. A new keyboard or any new input device for that matter, such as Multitouch mouse, would not be used to distinguish any certain Mac above others.

Now THAT is madness... Apple is just fine the way it is. You may have misread it; SJ said that Apple was going to have three core businesses, not split into three parts.

I agree that the notion they are providing is that of something that is going to be much higher end. That is if the Metal enclosures turn out to be a fact. I personally do not belive that this is the case but we will find out soon i guess:D

This makes me happy. I hope they do introduce the new iPods and some new computers. But why wouldnt they wait until 10.5 is released?

They could call it.....................the xMac!

Amazing that no one has ever suggested this before.

I don't have the time to find them right now, but I have heard this quite a lot over the past few years, as a suggestion to as what Apple should call it. But, I guess not for awhile now though.

yes the imac will stay all in one, that is a given.
but there is no reason not to put a highly expandable tower out there, for a reasonable price, especially since apple seems to go towards gaming

what would be amazing (but wont happen) is that if apple makes a motherboard, so u can have a build-your-own mac essentially, or even the unthinkable...having os x run on a regular pc.

I think they will announce price cuts in the mac pro by 50%, and rename it the mac pro-phylactic

Sorry, it has been awhile since I posted something tasteless.

Call it Mac.

or how bout the notsoBigMac or notsoProMac

I think they should call it the Mac desktop coupe 2007GTxli
and next year the could offer the Mac desktop convertible 2008GTO
but of course the touchscreen should be called the HandsoffofmyMac get your own.

Call it Mac.

Too confusing.

Person 1: What kind of computer do you have?
Person 2: It's a Mac.
Person 1: Cool, which one.
Person 2: The Mac.
Person 1: Yeah, but what kind.
Person 2: Mac.
Person 1: You idiot, what model?
Person 2: Mac.
Person 1: I hate you so much, nevermind.
Person 1: It's the Mac!
