I've been waiting to upgrade my 2020 SE for about a year now, and I am now torn between the 16e and the new base 17.....or maybe just even replacing the battery and keep rocking the SE. I was hopeful for the 16e, but annoyed by some of the design choices (no magsafe, meh camera, action button, etc)....but the battery life is appealing. Now the 17 base has even better battery life (ostensibly), but has all the new stuff I don't want (like dynamic island, more AI, etc). Price-wise for 256 GB...they would only be $100 different... hmmmm what to do....

Maybe they'll drop the 16e price? (doubtful). Maybe it's time I check out the certified refurbished Iphone 14pro (currently listing for $649)

In other news....I might finally upgrade my Airpods Pro V1 though.

I'm getting a refurbished iPhone 13 mini with a new battery. It's not because I can't afford an iPhone 17 - I used to buy a new one with every model since the inception - but because I prefer the smaller screen.

Nothing about the new iPhone 17 trumps the smaller screen size.

I recently had a look at the iPhone 16e. You can buy 3rd party bumpers for them. From the side I'd say that camera sticks out about a single mm.

So, the 16e with a bumper might be the way to go.

Will there be a 17e? Will its tumor have grown?

So. Many. Questions.

Imagine what they could innovate with an extra millimeter of battery.

The All New … iPhone Flush.

They are becoming very large. I had a look at the Pro Max the other day. I don't think that even fits in my trouser pockets as is, let alone when in a cover.

Regular ip 17 looks like awesome deal, iphone air looks really cool and futuristic, pro looks fugly and is heavy as brick. Will be choosing between 17 and air…

The absolute worst part of it all is the wobble when on the table. And the fact that the part that hits the table is a lens.

That's from a company that takes pride in its design.

It's good thing we can put it on the table screen down so that the screen takes the scratches.

Near the end of the presentation, I was confused…Apple says the phones will now have the ceramic backing, which is “industry leading” in toughness…but then they show the phone cases and then tell you it’s woven toughness to protect your phone from scratches, etc…. 🧐

There are two sides to the coin:
- on one side, a lot of ground work: OLTP, Glass, A19 Pro, N1, C1X, Camera system, ...
- on the other side, no new use case, incremental improvements from a non-technical user perspective.
Looks very much like a transition year with benefits to come.

I’m actually quite pleased with what was released.

That said, I’ll make it clear that I have no interest in iPhones this year (and probably won’t until 2027 - I’m happy with what I have now.

But for what I was interested in:

The Watch SE3 is far better than expected - a lot of features came to it that I thought would be ring fenced fir the 11 and Ultra 3 - a few hours ago I thought I’d be buying my wife a 10, now it will be an SE3 - fast charging and AOD tipped the scales for me.

The extra battery life on the 11 and U3 is a solid update, as that’s always the main complaint about Apple Watches.

AirPods Pro 3 look good - the last minute doom and gloom seems to gave been some grandstanding room and gloom just for the sake of it.

The event itself, meh - I watched 20 minutes then stopped and just followed the specs as they were posted online. At the end of the day it’s a presser and infomercial, nottentertainment.

Do I have to pay a fine now for not fuming about how “everything is even more terriblier” than last year?

It's a dilemma, isn't it? I have the dark purple iPhone 14 Pro, in one of Apple's leather cases since day one. I never get to enjoy that purple because of that case, which also adds bulk.

I don't want the camera lenses smashing the table either.

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

It’s a phone - what new use-case were you expecting?

Looks like a solid set of spec updates for 17 and 17 Pro and then a new category with 17 Air (kind of a morph of the iPhone mini where you make some sacrifices (in this case cameras) in order to get a smaller phone).

This is 2mm thick!

Yep, this is why I gave up worrying about the colour of an iPhone once it went notch, then Dynamic Island - once it’s in a case I forget what colour it is anyway.

I REALLY miss when Apple used to do live events. These pre-recorded, overproduced videos don't do it for me. So blah. So lack of excitement. So... yuck. Apple is no longer the scrappy underdog. Not by a long shot. Sad, really.
They’re also incredibly huge and incredibly wealthy. Always something for something. They’re never going back to the old days of having 4% of the market.

The other side of the coin is that, if they were not as big as they are now, they would have never been in the position to design their own chips and be taken seriously by a chip foundry.

At least we get some new colours in iPhone events. If you look at MacBook Air keynotes of the last few years ... that's just M1, 2, 3, 4. Even when you decide to buy, you realise that 364 days later you'll have an outdated computer.

The only interesting keynotes are the ones which have one more thing. Like you said: the rest are just press releases.
