If you ask me it's pretty clear what's happening.

We are finally at the point where smartphone and computer can't be updated every year so they started to create "phases" for upgrading.

iphone 15? Look how cool it is compared to an iphone 11
macbook pro? Look how many things you get upgrading from an intel mac.

The point is, they're are not even trying to convince people that bought in the last couple of years, the events of this year were clearly for people with older devices.
I like this analysis. I like that we are hitting the limits and even necessity of innovation for innovation's sake. Growth is not always required. This is a gross analogy, but continuing to grow "forever" is called cancer and we don't want that. ;-)

I am still holding out also, though I feel the Death Star tractor beam on my ass...

<<holds down option key and boots into Windows for non-iPhone quality gaming>>
You, sir, are a retrograde! Tim is not happy!

The base model Pro is actually an interesting option. Consider:

Air 13 M2 - 8/10/8/512 - $1,399 - 2.7lbs
Air 15 M2 - 8/10/8/512 - $1,499 - 3.3lbs
Pro 14 M3 - 8/10/8/512 - $1,599 - 3.4lbs

Basically, anyone who wanted the XDR display or other Pro features can now get them for an extra $100-$200, instead of having to shell out a full $2K.

Bit late for that with those pants they made him wear.

I think they desperately want Intel Mac owners to upgrade. Any M1 or M2 owners is a bonus.
If they want us to upgrade why not give us what we are asking for? A 27 or larger iMac. That will get me to upgrade. My parents have another 27 iMac and for them size is the most important aspect, as well as being as simple as possible to use, a 24 iMac just won't cut it. So if they are desperate, give us what we want.

No interest at all in a studio display and a Mac mini.

make boot camp happen and I will give them $4k tonight. Until then, I can wait...
If Apple didn't completely change the firmware from (not U)EFI it would be easy. Windows will boot on (practically) any UEFI ARM device.

As more details come out it's looking fairly clear that Apple have nerfed the M3 Pro MBP to encourage upgrades to the M3 Max versions. Lower memory bandwidth than M2 Pro, fewer P cores and fewer GPU cores... It would not surprise me if the base M3 Pro is only 5-10% faster than the M2 Pro in general tasks that don't require new hardware features (e.g. ray-tracing or AV1 decode).

M2 Pro was 6 or 8 p-cores with 4 e-cores and 16 or 19 GPU cores with 200 GB/s memory bandwidth. M3 pro is 5 or 6 p-cores with 6 e-cores and 14 or 18 GPU cores with 150 GB/s memory bandwidth.
So this is true?

I'm as stumped as you as to why making a 27" iMac is now apparently an impossibility. Best guess, is they are trying to force the Mac mini and Studio display on that market segment.

Has Apple always referred to the capabilities of the base products (iMac, 14 inch M3 MBP) as being for "exploring hobbies" vs the M3 Pro/Max MBPs being for Pros? Or are they using new marketing terms
Yes, they often do that. I guess that's how they sell more expensive computers to pros, even though the majority of them don't require the additional horsepower. Personally, I handle music projects with hundreds of tracks on an iMac M1 without any problems. The only benefit "Pro" Macs could give me is additional ports, but with external hubs, everything works perfectly! And I have to say I prefer the colorful iMac over the serious silver, grey, and black tones of "Pro" Macs.

The comparisons on the site seem to suggest the jump is similar to M1 Pro>M2 Pro or better. Some examples.

Bit late for that with those pants they made him wear.

Your takes are utterly juvenile. Tim Cook looked perfectly fine for the occasion; casually coordinated and together, but just professional enough for the occasion. His styling team is right-on-point. And orders of magnitude more put together than anything you are wearing.

I don’t get these commenters. Cook is an excellent CEO, Apple is doing well, releasing great stuff. The presentation is right to the point. And yet here we are, idiocy concerning his clothing.

Apple: ignore this stupidity.

Those numbers don't give any specifics - it's likely they are using the top spec M3 Pro chip rather than the base model.

It depends what you do with it. I have a MBP 16 I9 2.4 with 32512 and graphic card upgrade. I just looked at the M1/M2/M3 specs - they very similar. Since i am not doing something pro with it, no need to buy something new. Battery is around 80% and still does many hours with the intel 630.

Why do people keep calling these things keynotes?

It’s obvious. The text slides, graphs and transitions are done in Apple Keynote. If you use Keynote, you instantly recognize the slide gradients, fonts, shaders, transitions, graphs, etc.

Also, for a nice looking slide presentation that can be done in half the time, Keynote is superior to PowerPoint.

Actually, thinking about this for a bit longer I wonder if the reduced core counts are to do with lower than expected yields from the new 3 nm process as a way to use chips with faulty cores. If so, I wonder whether we will see a refresh next year (WWDC) that keeps the M3 range, but bumps the CPU/GPU cores as the process yields improve.

So you get some ports back and 1 inch bigger screen for $300 more than what an old MBP started out at as. Wow what a bargain . I hope everybody that was complaining like it was physically hurting you is happy they got rid of the 13’ MBP because you ask and you shall receive, but it’s just going to cost you $200-300 more than you asked for.

With that said, I like that they got an actual full black MBP now. The event overall was..disappointing? I’m not sure what I expected. I figured it was going to be pretty short, I believe the prior events around this time were short also. It was kind of cool to be somewhat surprised by the existence of the event in the first place, thanks to Apple feeding false info to leakers, but I also actually kind of hoped it was actuall going to be more gaming focused. Oh well.

Edit: Looking at it now, the price is more like $100 more than what it started out at before considering it comes standard with 512GB storage, so I guess that blow is a little less, the pricing overall is a little more balanced. I’m probably not going to upgrade from M1 for quite a while, but it is nice to know that once I do there will be a lot bigger gaps and enhancements in performance than I had anticipated so good on Apple for that.

Too much effort just to support Windows ARM and Linux ARM. Virtualization is their solution.

actually he needs to hit the gym.. that gut was highly visible in that tight T

This is possible. Except for a few graphs they avoided direct comparisons with the M2 series. But they clearly wanted to get the M3 series chips out in 2023. It could be fulfilling their commitment to TSMC requires more than just the A17 Pro, or they really want the ray tracing support to convince more developers to port AAA games.

Yes - but look at the specs. I don't think your Samsung SSD (i have and love them as well) will handle read and write speeds like the apple chips. Internal SSD's with that speed cost far more than 100 bucks.
No Apple SSD even the Mac Pro's comes close to 12,000MBps that we're getting with PCIe 5.0 SSD NVME now. They still run around $250 for 2TB.
