Looking at online specs....the new machines have 140w PSUs, my current 2018 15inch has a 87w power supply. I thought these chips were more energy efficient so why the bigger PSUs? Faster charging is the only thing I can think of. Maybe to handle more devices powered through USB-C?

Yes, they support fast charging. 50% charge in 30 minutes according to the stream.

Well, considering the extra horsepower I’m not surprised. That will be one hot chip for those who tend to max out their systems. I’m interested in seeing just how comparable that GPU is to AMD/nvidia.

You don't get the point, for years prices stayed the same, since about 2015/2016 prices have gone up considerably, just look at the prices of Macbooks in the decade before, faster machines for the same money, again, Apple raised prices considerably, 15" MBP were about $500 cheaper for a loooonnnngggg time.

Boo hoo. Party's over. Like I said, you have other options if you don't think the new MBPs are worth it.

Yeah, I mean, I bought the (almost) top-end configuration of MBP in 2019, but it’s just been sitting in clamshell mode on my desk since Covid. I was looking to sell it and replace it with a Mac Mini… but I think Apple foresaw people like me and said “What if we make them upgrade to another MacBook Pro instead?”

Makes sense. I’m not going to do it personally, for a year or so, but I’m sure many people in my position WILL buy it, just to use it as a desktop machine.
Apple has never operated that way. The mini is basically the red headed stepchild, the idea that they’re consciously forcing you into another laptop instead of a mini is absurd. The MacBook line is their bread and butter of Macs, that’s why it’s been updated.

I’d love to strap a mini to the back of my monitor, but they’re not withholding the mini to force MacBook sales. Apple has always considered them entirely different product categories…because they are.

I hope an updated one comes soon for your use case though, I’ll definitely pick one up for a home machine at some point down the road.

Faster charging - and the ability to fast charge and work at the same time.

Nobody talking about how thick it is? Apple reversing course is a good thing I think, going from thin to thick rather than making everything as thin as possible, but my God this thing is HUGE

years of iPhone use has beaten you into submission. ;)

wait until you see what it does do lengthy menu bars...
Oh, I despise the notch on phones, but that’s because that screen space isn’t used for menus normally. The notch on a MBP just means they figured out how to push the menu bar up into the bezel, which is fantastic.

Loved everything. I'm waiting to see how the mid tier 14 inch pro's review in terms of specs. I don't think anything I do (including YouTube videos) needs the max over the pro chips. Debating between 1TB of space versus 2TB. Definitely going with 32 gigs of ram.

As long as nothing is wrong with these machines, they look really really good.

Fully pro, no compromises.

so with the same exact config, the 16in costs $200 more than the 14in. i haven't checked the battery size or know if the 16in has better cooling, but as of right now, you'd have to be a fool to buy the 14in imo.

I'm not a laptop guy, but these are certainly enticing. Those complaining about price are obviously not Pro users as the pricing is in line with past Pro pricing.

I'm left wondering if they might still sneak in a November event for the desktops (iMac and Mac mini)? After all, the M1 announcement last year was in November and it doesn't seem like they need to wait to announce new desktops at this point, unless they truly are concerned about chip shortages, not that I think desktops would really have that much of an impact. Here's hoping for a mac Mini Pro soon!
