Oh FFS, $2K for a 14" laptop. My 2015 MBP 13" was $1100.
Yeah but those 13" weren't really all that "Pro". They were just using the run-of-the-mill dual-core processors that every basic Windows laptop had from the time. The current MacBook Air with the M1 is a much closer comparison to those 13" MBPs than these new 14" and 16" MBPs are.

It was still October when I tried right after the store opened. Sadly I didn't manage to get through at first and by the time I did it was already shipping towards the end of November...

There is crazy demand apparently.
Best MacBook Pro release since 2015? I’d say so!

How is that possible with that horrible notch? Who could possibly be buying this thing?

/scarcasm

I don’t understand the notch hate. It gives the user more screen real estate that used to be wasted on a massive bezel.

Seriously - I can see the reasoning: it's moved the menu bar out of the way and left the main 16:10 area free - and 95% of the time the middle of the menu bar is blank... but if you use "light mode" it's always going to look like a a big bite out of the display.

Hey, maybe if they'd made the bezel white... (runs away very fast :) )

Last week: “The 13” MBP isn’t a real Pro device”.

Today: The most powerful and capable MBP’s ever. 30x 4K ProRes / 7x 8K ProRes streams in real-time…they’re cheap at those prices.

What we can deduce from the comments is that non-pros want to buy pro devices but not pay pro prices.

it's only reasonably priced compared to previous macbooks. the cost to upgrade the SSD/RAM still costs the apple premium, and the GPU performance still does not outclass the performance out of the RTX 3080. sure, it'll be more power efficient, but i doubt that it'll be that good due to the 140W adapter and the probability that this chip will run HOT and LOUD underload

The SSD upgrade prices are quite high. But $400 to go from 32 GB to 64 GB is pretty reasonable.

Looking at online specs....the new machines have 140w PSUs, my current 2018 15inch has a 87w power supply. I thought these chips were more energy efficient so why the bigger PSUs? Faster charging is the only thing I can think of. Maybe to handle more devices powered through USB-C?

This is the cinema4D menu. Now tell me how the f*** notch fits there?

yeah, now when I have to charge feom the right I loose ports on the right. Also if I need tk connect to a screen from the left, I can use the usb-c port and leave the hdmi empty. Nevermind a non standard charger, that as soon as it breaks wont use anymore.

I was hoping we would get to retain the 4 ports in addition to an sd card reader and hdmi. After 5 years od using an usb-c only mac this seems like a step back. Way less versatile.

the worst is the magsafe, propetary chargers are not a sustainable solution.
When do you ever have to plug in a monitor on a particular side? I get the slight frustration with not being able to charge from both sides if you're sitting on a couch or in bed, but if you're plugging in additional peripherals, you're probably sitting at a desk where it doesn't matter which side you charge or drive a monitor from.

As for MagSafe, I'm personally happy that my existing chargers will now work for this laptop, but it is a step backwards overall. There's zero reason for proprietary chargers nowadays, and USB not being up to spec for certain current draws isn't a good excuse, since that can be changed.
Am I now the one saying I’ll stick woth my 2016 until they come back to their senses? Is this how the cycle goes?
I've been holding onto my 2014 one all this time to avoid the 2016-2020 models, so I guess so.

So this time they have enough courage to bring back: hdmi, sd card reader, mag safe and even proper keyboard. About time!

Ordered maxed out 16". Spent ten minutes deciding how much SSD to buy and shipping date slipped by 5 weeks. lol

The event did say they can fast charge now 50% in 30 minutes. That's my guess for the bigger PSU

Haha! It’s not expensive if you need it. I’m getting that most people complaining about the price don’t necessarily need a pro machine anyway.

Looks like I’ll be getting a mid range configured 14”, for around £3.5k, but I produce Photography, film, and music. And I move around.

trust me, if I didn’t need it, or have a use case for it, I wouldn’t buy it. I’d just get an M1 Air, or even an iPad Air. Actually I did already, and that’s what I use when I’m not working.

if you need M1 Pro, and I mean Really, the price is expected.
I’m not complaining. It will get the job done, quicker, so I can get paid sooner And more often. That justifies the cost and pays for itself.
