"Vapor chamber cooling system" isn't a feature. This is something I shouldn't even know about as a consumer. Apple is implementing this because the iPhone gets too hot at times- as if every phone gets too hot.
Some units do. Some don’t.
Some do only under extreme load. They always did.
Why stand in the way of a fix? Especially in warmer climates this can be helpful.

iPhone 17 Pro models will come with thermal camera integrated.
Those cameras are indeed bulky.
And for niche applications.
Apple will not just put such a camera in every iPhone for, what reason? Like, if you really expect this over a vapor chamber, may I interest you in some snake oil?
Although admittedly, that was my very first thought too, but then again, really, what do Pro‘s need that for?

Not standing in the way of a fix. I just don't agree with calling it a "feature". It's more of a fix.

Did the iridescent white version rumor die out or anyone think we might get it? The logo could hint with the color shifting but I might be looking into that too much.

There is a logic to those guesses and I'll be curious if they're true.

I should mention that this website, and Apple forums in general, love to read the tea leaves about the Apple event logos but I've never seen follow-up comments dissecting whether the guesses were right or wrong. It's just a time-passing activity that has become a sort of tradition, but I'm quite sure if you look back, there are numerous events where the cool visual design ended up not being linked to anything announced at all.
Actually, there were hints more often than not. But yeah, I just thought an article about these cases would be great.
I swear there have been clues. Subtle, but present. Most of the times at least.

People actually worry about the color of their phone and a camera bump? Man, I hope nothing serious never happens to you in life like someone putting a pizza box in your recycle container.

I would find it odd if they base the entire logo and design of this event announcement around a cooling feature that most customers will not even know or even care about.

I hope Apple's processors don't become like Intels and need constant cooling. The main difference Apple pushed when it developed its own chip was that it ran cool and had great performance-per-watt. Maybe they should just get in the business of marketing hotplates.

Am I not supposed to put pizza boxes in the recycling?!?

I don’t care that much about new colors. Since they came out with the titanium colors, that’s my go to choice without even thinking about other options. Looks so nice, and makes so much sense to just have it natural without any colors.
natural titanium is soo nice. got that for the 15PM. went back to white for 16PM and am likely going back to natural with 17PM.

It is. The iPhone’s back in 2008 didn’t require much as users didn’t use it much. Now that users are actually pushing their iPhone’s harder, it’s going to need to stay cool. It’s also a great way to beta test the vapor chamber before bringing it to the MacBook Air and iPad Pro.
You could make that comment for literally any computer-type device ever made. Here's the cycle...

Device is used in a certain way → Technology improves → Device is used in an expanded way that's more resource intensive → Battery, RAM, Processor, etc. are overworked → device needs to not overheat → Technology meets that need → Device reaches new baseline → Repeat

Sure technology advances are great, but the larger problem is that competitive landscape is also much different than it was in 2008. Apple cannot afford to only do "under the hood" updates and call them features. People want real-world, practical features that make engaging with their device feel different than everyone else.

Macrumors suggested the new color was a "feature", not Apple. Huge difference.
Not really a "huge difference" when you see how incremental everything since iPhone 12/13 has been compared to how it's hyped/presented in the reality distortion field.

Apple literally made an entire marketing "film" on the switch to a Titanium frame and put it front and center in the new "features" on the iPhone 16 Pro. Arguably, that "feature" actually hurt thermal performance, and, besides being something they could buzz around, is an entirely non-functional feature beyond some fractions of an ounce/a few grams?

Apple *very much* does stuff like this on a regular basis, and, well, I can't blame them, the fanbois lap it up, camp out for upgrades/to shell out increasingly large sums to "upgrade". Take the money for the least amount of risk/investment/innovation, of course, but trying to suggest that Apple doesn't engage in such chicanery.

Maybe Apple has something that hasn't leaked that is _truly_ amazing and MR got this wrong, but that wouldn't be a bet I'd make.

Maybe one day I will be able to use my iPhone outside in the summer without the screen dimming to unreadable levels from overheating

I don’t have the new design but I wish we could ditch the camera bump entirely and get a chunkier phone that sits flush on a table
Remember when that was the norm?
I agree.

I also think we could go back to iPhone 6 Plus era cameras, and the vast majority of people wouldn’t notice or care. I feel like it’s the online tech reviewers giving hyper analytical reviews of the camera, together perhaps with online influencers, who are driving the constant increase in size of the camera (to achieve small gains in image quality). I have photos dating back to the 90s in my photo library on my phone, including some taken on the very first digital cameras that used floppy discs. When I scan back looking over old memories, I am not even aware of the difference in image quality for the most part. And, certainly from the 6plus era, I can’t tell unless I zoom in or focus heavily on small details, which I’m not doing as an average user looking at old photos. I suspect many average users would be the same.

If we went back to simpler hardware, with today’s software and processing power, I think the difference in quality would be even less. If that gave me a simpler phone without the massive bump on the back, I’d choose that every time.

You know what helps keep a device cool? Designing it properly in the first place and not trying to make it "the thinnest device yet". Apple are pathetic when it comes to cooling.

Gray will be the color I’ll probably get but I’m open to the copper / orange if it’s a nice shade. Guess we gotta wait to the official unveiling to see what they actually look like
