Maybe for some, but Gruber had an article a few years back where some people he knew got all excited about new iPhones when all that had happened was that Apple released a new color in the spring. There are over a billion users out there. Apple has to provide something for everyone and I am happy for each one of them.

i've given up on transparent cases, they always start going a ugly yellow/brown colour around the rubberised edges.

Yeah I’m really curious about what the breakdown of people are pushing the limits of the iPhone on a regular basis. I know some countries a person’s phone is their only computing device so it might make more sense to see more things like games played on them, but I also thought those countries had more android device adoption than iPhone.
I see what you're saying, but don't you think this is excitement from people who are planning to upgrade anyway? That's it's a nice extra thing you get with your new iPhone but not that it's a feature really like a larger display or better camera system, etc.
This is an extremely common issue with the last two models. I had to return my 16 pro and learn to live with my 13 pro with a broken camera. It's hilarious that they couldn't solve this issue for such a long time. ---An irrelevant side note: please introduce more vivid (fanta) orange kinda cases this time!!!!
I was recently in a National Park and it was in the low-90's outside. My 16 Pro was struggling while just taking some photos and short videos. The screen darkened and was flashing darker to lighter to warn of overheating.
I have had every phone since the original and never used a case. The only damage I’ve had is in the screens on the more recent models which scratch very easily. But I also don't care about the colour. MR reports that an Apple Watch will be announced at the event. A thermal camera would be valuable on an Apple Watch if it were measuring Photobiomodulation (red and near-infrared) light from specialty lighting and sunlight! The Photobiomodulation Database ( bit.ly/PBM-database ) tracks the 8800+ papers that describe positive biological health impact of these light frequencies. Great potential impact on health -- if Apple has done the studies to measure/verify the impact of altering behavior through instrumentation and gamification of red/infrared light. An elusive-obvious heat map from the event invite could show this.
