It's a bit disappointing if next week's laptops do not bring any other changes than the CPU. I thought it was part of a "waouh" effect to bring Apple Silicon along with a completely new design.

Just replacing the CPUs is a bit dull imo. Not to mention that only 2 of next week's laptop will be equipped with A chips, the MBP 16" will still be intel-based.

Sad.

The fact that they can already transition the 16-inch to Apple Silicon is honestly impressive.
As much as I want one, I won't trust it for a few years. I want them to iterate on the issues the first gen of 13"ers have, so people that use a 16" for actual professional work aren't having a dog of a time like I have with my 16" MBP.

Which makes me wonder if this rumor isn’t inaccurate. It’s possible that they would do something like this, but it certainly wouldn’t make me happy in any way, except for maybe saving money. And I was pretty excited about the whole thing.

What‘s the track record for Bloomberg?

ditto others wait see and enjoy then most likely wait for reviews and what software is out of them so soon of course showing and actual release date ?

very well might be a wait for 2nd gen would be wise this time

my real hope is that iPads can use regular software soon ! that for some would be a game changer

the new Macs will not feature significant design changes, with Apple continuing to use the same MacBook form factor. Rumors suggest Apple is working on redesigned versions of the MacBook Pro that will come in 14.1 and 16.1-inch sizes with mini-LED displays, but those machines will not be ready until 2021.

Exactly why I upgraded from my early 2015 rMBP to a 10th gen Intel MBP in July. I’ll gladly ride this machine out for 3 to 4 years until the design, hardware, and chipset transition are all nailed down.

If there truly is a 16” ARM Macbook released this month, I will rethink my plans to buy a smaller screen Macbook. I think the new ARM 16” usefulness would be worth the price.

2 years to transition? With the 13, Air, and 16 covered... is there really anything left that really makes it worth taking the whole 2 years?

I hope they do bring us a 12” MacBook (Air), but it would cannibalize the Air—which Apple couldn’t care less about. If they think there’s enough demand, they’ll make it.
Why would it? Look around with windows notebooks, the ultraportables are the most expensive ones, not the cheapest. The air is the entry level mac, similar sizes, but two totally different markets.

But the event will be fascinating, regardless. I was expecting something else, but it’s still a huge deal

NICE! A Macbook Air with 32GB RAM option is prolly wishful thinking but would be awesome.
What kind of features are others looking for in a possible new design? Touchscreen, smaller bezels?

It probably won't take two years. Their last "two year" transition took 7 months.

Yeah because you can only do "actual professional work" with a 16", Jesus.

I bought a 16 inch back in February. Dang I wish I waited. I was hoping for mini LEFD tho
But you're in a pretty good position then. You've got a new MBP and that'll give you the space to wait for the model you're waiting for. Me, I'm rocking a 2016 MBP. I'm just afraid of the rumors that were popping up that said it was just going to be the low end toys 😂

I've built this imaginary 14.1 inch MBP in my head for so long there's no way it will ever live up to my expectations 😅

Same, I'm so ready to upgrade my mid-2014. And I'm in a position to buy right now, not sure in 6-12 months though.

But aesthetics are useless when function is compromised. I’ll still take an old wrapper with non-windows, non-chrome book any day of the week still, even as Apple still handicaps the OSX with a childish Fisher-Price My first MacBook appearance (that’s only getting worse by the looks of it, heading into Big Slur). Futunately/unfortunately, I’m ready to replace my 2014 MBA though, Apple’s killed my productivity and ability to use the expensive software I’d purchased just 5 years ago (Logic Express 9, Adobe Photoshop, etc).
I understand where you're coming from and I agree (I'm typing this on my 2011 17", still my favorite laptop of all time).

That said, my needs have changed over the years, and so has Apple.

I hope they apply the clever product management they've done to the iOS lineup to the Mac and have a Mac for everyone... I think they're almost there.

What issues do you have with your MBP16? I have one, and am curious.

I do agree to an extent, it would be nice to see them refresh what is essentially the same design they've been using for years now. However, with Apple Silicon I'm willing to overlook the design aspect as it's aged really quite well to my eyes at least. Small additions like the touchbar etc. do help to bring the design up to date imo.
Don't get me wrong, I still love my huge-bezeled iMac and my not-so-thin-bezeled 17", and the current 16" is quite nice.

I just don't need such powerful machines anymore, so a thinner-bezeled Air (with maybe a bigger screen?) and iPad Pros is what I'd really love to see.

Not a need, really, just a want design-wise.

Seems like a lot of what is on the A14 would be wasted inside a MacBook, the neural engine and AI/ISP accelerators... no need for them in a laptop. Why not just add more CPU and GPU cores = better laptop/desktop chip?

Don't compare windows to a kind-of-unix os, which has a long history of supporting arm.
I'm not worried about the OS per se. Windows ran just fine on ARM. I'm worried about there being no other software besides the OS (and of course Pages, Keynote, Itunes, Safari).

Uh? This does not make any sense. The A14 is already as fast as the top of the line current MacBook Pro 13”. And that’s a phone SOC.

How can you keep the Intel as the top end when basically Apple could just literally take the same processor in the iPhone, clock it a bit higher and make a faster laptop?

Not running macOS it isn't - you can't just compared Geekbench scores.

If that is the case. If they are behind as you expect, they’ve blown it.
They didn’t start working on this during state of the union. I expect this ready.

Disagreed it's the planned approach - a slow phase out of top end models (where it's harder for them to compete off the bat anyway) and a slow roll out of lower end models so that the software can catch up with out "pro" users needing it all working NOW.
