He had me shut down my computer and he did the battery test. As he was pulling up the info on his iPad about the battery replacement, I could see that it said that the part was out of stock. He read more information, and I think saw something about the program. He went in back to speak with someone about it, and came back telling me my 2 options were to wait until mid-September to get a free battery replacement, or pay the $199 for the battery and get a 2015 refurbished system. I obviously took the latter, knowing that it has a good chance of being even newer.

@PackFan which Apple store did you go to? Looks like you're in the MSP area? I'm 3 hours away with no Apple store, so this may actually be worth the drive if I could get upgraded to a newer MBP for $199.

I had them replace my base model refurbished 2012 with a 2015 refurbished. Doubled my storage, ram, and got a better GPU/CPU.

Kind of late story though. It sounds like they will discontinue this program pretty soon.

Actually, I just went to my local store (Pittsburgh), and they told me that top case parts will become available in September. Swapped mine last night.

If you check Coconut Battery and your percent is under 80% with cycles less than 1000, you should be fine.

I downloaded Coconut Battery earlier and so far I've seen it fluctuate anywhere from just over 80% to 77.5%. Just over 550 cycles now.

So I had my appt today. I had 750 cycles and about 60% battery according to coconut. Genius didn't even look into it that much. Just saw I needed new battery, tried to order one, saw the part was out of stock and then saw the program. He offered me a new machine or to wait until December 2017 to get it fixed. I chose the new machine of course haha.

He said I would get a call from someone in the store later today to get credit card info and confirm everything else. Apple Store in Bridgewater NJ for all those curious. Love Apple's Customer Service!

Took my laptop in just now and got offered replacement. The tech said she's seen mostly 2017 touch bar models come through as replacements lately, but, as stated, no guarantee on what I will get.

I just finished my Genius Bar appointment. My guy was very informed about the rMBP mid 2012 battery issue. He quickly ran the battery test with his iPad and confirmed the rMBP battery is failing. Then he gave me some options but specifically advised me to take the refurb computer instead of waiting for the battery part to restock. The Apple Store will then contact me in a day to get my credit card info and confirm the refurb rMBP model. It should arrive within 2 weeks. Thanks Apple!!!

Hopefully, we both get the 2017 one. I was at the one around the world trade center today

Apple will not replace the battery, especially with this program, without showing a need for the battery. and be warned, its not a newer model for the price of the repair. if you want that you will have to pay the difference. You get a refurbished model of minimum likeness to what you give up for the price of the repair.

I just took five computer from that era in cause they had battery issue. only 4 passed the diagnostic for battery replacement the fifth they said I had to wait. since they are work machines we needed the 4 fixed now. 3 they had the refurbs in stock, the 4th the boss opt'd to pay up for newer. oh and the touch bar computers are not allowed.

Ok....sooooooo how much did you have to pay?

I took my 2012 MacBook Pro in to the store today. I've had a few issues since they changed the logic board. I also have under 80% battery capacity. They didn't want to run the test and asked to keep it in for a triage. They said it would take up to three days but they said I'll probably get a call tomorrow.

Sounds like someone does not have a laptop that qualifies, however, if you did you would be singing a different tune. Be happy for people, envy is an evil thing and will only make your life miserable.

Actually I have a 2017 Pro. Enjoy having to waste a load of time cycling your battery over and over in a desperate attempt to borderline defraud Apple to be able to upgrade yours.

TBH I don't really care and if people are getting them replaced after legit wearing the battery out... yay! All I was saying is, I bet those of you purposefully killing your battery from the moment this news broke out to whenever it dies will end up simply wasting a lot of time, having to pay for battery service you didn't need before and being left with your existing machine. No skin off my nose I guess, it'll be amusing if nothing else.

You're kind of acting like you care...

Is this true? I had my 2012 Macbook Pro battery checked back in June, and the guy from Apple Store told me to come back in September and waived the repairing cost. So now I see that there is another option, which I need because I can't bring my current Macbook Pro to class, I got pretty excited. However, I called Apple support 5 times and they told me there is no such a program... Should I just bring my Macbook Pro to the store and ask again?

Said F it and decided to head to one of my stores (Los Angeles) and get on the stand by list. Only took 15min of the estimated hour and a half.

They ran the test. Looked it over and now they are looking into how to do the swap as they haven't done here yet.

Cool.

My battery is still in "good" condition but I wouldn't say it's in great condition. 2 hours of life typically. coconutBattery says it's any where from 77% healthy to 83% healthy depending on the current usage. Any advice on how to quickly get my battery to a "needs service" state? Additionally, coconutBattery says I'm running at 105º currently... is that normal?

This is largely me. Mid 2012, 327 cycles, about 2 hours of life typically and just shuts down once I get in to the low 30% if I am lucky, it waffles a lot between 77-83 for health....I call BS on the "good" status. Might bring it in this weekend if I have some time and see how it goes.

I would take it to the store and see what they say.
