The device doesn't leave the home, it's not asinine they didn't include it. You don't need U1 in the new remote – you want it in the new remote.
They specifically demoed the U1 features inside the home. Their ad even took place inside a couch. So …

But okay, playing a sound instead of the U1 would have been enough. And clearly, it doesn't need support for the Find My network.

Input switcher button and some favourite buttons and a beeper in the remote would have made the remote better. Seeing as the remote is for the living room it could have been made it from a more useable material like a rubberised material that can be dropped on the floor without denting or something if thrown to another person didn’t become a ninja star. And no, it’s not just that people grew up using a five-way control and are more familiar with it, it’s that a five-way control is the better design by an order of magnitude. I hate the touch pad for remote control so much I hope for design sake it can be turned off. Making a laptop from aluminium with a trackpad makes sense, making a TV remote from aluminium with a touch pad does not make sense, for the reasons I mentioned.

I’m a big boy, I put my toys away when I’m done using them. Haven’t lost a remote in years.

Applying that same logic no one needs the U1 chip in anything. It is a convenience and nothing more.

It does seem absolutely asinine when Apple has expanded Find My to third party devices and released AirTags yet they somehow overlooked the usefulness of having the remote be findable. Apple is all about the ecosystem and this would have been another way to reinforce their ecosystem to the customer.

I can’t tell you the number of times my kid loses things in the house. We were without the remote for 1 TV for the better part of a month before we found it.

I’m not sure what Tim Twerdahl is smoking at Apple HQ, but this quote stood out as odd.

They don’t make “great audio products for the home” they make ONE audio product for the home. (at this time) Not only that, but this eARC feature doesn’t currently support the latest selling “great audio product for the home”

You can’t even go to an Apple Store and buy a HomePod to take advantage of eARC because they stopped making them.**

**you might be able to purchase two white HomePods at an Apple Store today, but that doesn’t help if in 4 months you purchase a new Apple TV.

get a decent sofa, and that thing will not slip trough the cushions... 🤣

Seriously: If I were Tim, I would - sorry - spank the butt of that Exec for giving such a stupid answer. It does not have it, because it does not have it. End of story.

I probably would even have integrated it after having done some research at customers. It would not have ruined Apple and would have been an interesting gimmick. But ok. 10c less cost per remote...

I have had the new remote for about 30 minutes and its so much better than the old remote. It's funny because Apple doesnt do much that is a bust but that ATV4K original remote IMO, was a bust

Ignoring the Siri remote comment - and the 8 repeats of the same joke on the first page. I've not been able to use my stereo HomePods as an output constantly on my Apple TV (including the new one) as some apps don't sync up when using them. Twitch for instance is about 5 seconds behind, it's awful. They've had this feature for about 6 months now and Twitch still hasn't fixed it in their app.
Twitch sucks. I use my homepods and minis (different house) using netflix, prime Apple TV+. I even use them with my Mac ( although there is whiny from some on a such issue, but I’ve never experienced it could be their crappy wifi or a crappy app). I have no problems. There is an audio synch feature on Apple TV, did you try that? But I think that is more for syncing tv speakers with remote speakers, but again works great for me

Just got the new Siri Remote today and when using the YouTube app, you used to be able to skip ahead 15 seconds or so by pressing a certain area of the trackpad and no controls came up on screen, which was nice. Now I can't seem to replicate that feature with the new remote, it skips ahead the 15 seconds but it pauses the video and the controls come up on screen...that's not cute.
To be fair.. the youtube app for Apple TV is truly abysmal.
