When's the last time Apple did something like this, though? I can't recall them ever changing custom configuration options, especially so soon on the heels of a product release.

They did with the 2010 MacBook Pros and before that with the 2007 MacBook Pros.

why would they not let you have these upgrade options? they upcharge you so much money on them it is not even funny ...

Great, buying 2,7ghz with 768 SSD and 16gb of ram :D
... When I win the lottery. Fingers crossed.

With the student discount if I upgrade everything to have the same specs of the high end it'll be so much cheaper! $2569.

On the bit where it offers to alow an upgrade to the size of storage it mentions that this is not upgradable at a later date (so choose carefully now...)

I knew the RAM was hard wired to the board but always thought the SSD was socketed and therefore upgradable when memory became more affordable.

Can anyone enlighten me...?

The SSD IS socketed, but Apple doesn't want you to know that. AFAIK Apple won't change it if you take it to the Apple Store for an upgrade.

That's the difference between a product with 3-4 weeks delivery time and one with 1 week delivery time.

I just checked and came up with something strange... In the HK education store if you pick the base model and bto it then for the same specs its HKD 388 cheaper (USD 50). That annoys me as I bought the higher end model only 2 weeks ago.

$1000 for a 768GB SSD upgrade ???

Unbelievable price!

In the UK, SSDs seem to be hovering around the 50p/Gig mark currently.

So if you buy from Apple, you're paying $1.30 per gig and losing the stock drive in the process.

Why are you comparing a stock form factor SSD with a custom storage board that ONLY fits the RMBP? They may serve the same purpose but they definitely are not interchangeable by any means.

I'm not defending the pricing (everyone knows Apple charges a premium on upgrade parts), but it's silly to talk as if they are the same component when one is a custom board and one is a standard drive.

Here in Poland we are able to choose between all upgrades for Base Retina model. 2.6 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 256 SSD is available here to order.

Apple is now offering all available upgrades on the low-end model, giving customers full control over their configuration needs. For example, users who want to upgrade storage on the low-end model can now do so with 512 GB ($500)

In Massachusetts, with educational pricing, that would put it at $1 less than the maximum allowed for the upcoming sales tax holiday in a couple of weeks, and qualifies for the $100 back to school gift card! Sounds tempting...

Pricing Update: This 2.3GHz/8GB/512GB configuration is actually $2449 not $2499 under educational pricing . And if you boost the processor up to 2.6GHz it's $2539, that's $60 less than if you select the 2.6GHz base model (both are identical configurations!). Again, all of this is under educational pricing...

i don't know how's the customer service in UK, but can't you give it back as soon as it arrives? if you need the extra power (saving lot of money compared to the 2800$ version) then just do it. you've waited a month, you can wait another one :p

edit: anyway to me it seems more clever to just have one model in the online store, with complete bto possibilities, rather than two different models and crippled bto options (as usual at apple's though).

The frustrating thing is that I've had the computer for two weeks, so my return options are limited. If this had happened a week ago, I would have considered the return! Oh well, it's an unfortunate series of events...

Ok, I've been playing around with the options/prices and the Base model matched upto to the 512gb model now has the same price (at least in the UK store). So, if you bump up the Base to the same 512gb SSD and 2.6 Processor, there is no price difference (although there initially was...)

I'm really tempted to cancel my order (which is due to ship tomorrow) as I would have bumped up the processor had the option been there at the start...

I am really annoyed by this as I would have bumped the processor 100% as its only 100.00 dollars.

VERY ANNOYING to have this happen a month or so after launch.

They likely had a lot of complaints for forcing users to pay an extra $600 to allow additional upgrade configurations. $600 is a lot to pay for a 14% increase in speed, especially when that extra capacity is very seldom if ever needed by the average user.

Hopefully it's a lesson learned and they'll do what's right in the first place.

DO IT! If you don't cancel your order you'll won't be as happy as your next order if you decide you cancel ;)

This is absolute crap! I'm on the UK store and it still shows the ability to upgrade. I would have certainly upgraded to 2.6GHz for £100! Apple really screwed us here. If this had been an option five months down the line, maybe I'd feel differently about it, but this is just an insult, particularly since I had to wait a month for my computer to arrive in the first place!

A much better deal for those who are happy to wait though.

Early adopters should know that there will be more configuration options added in the near future. I am personally waiting for the 13" version and I won't be stupid enough to be an early adopter either, I'll wait. There's no rush.

Your comment about not defending the pricing is contradictory.

Either you believe that a 'custom storage board that ONLY fits the RMBP' is worth significantly more than a stock form factor solid state drive or you believe that flash storage is flash storage, irrespective of its form factor.

I believe the latter, and that Apple are somewhat insulting with the prices of upgrades.
