In January, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the new entry-level iPad would be equipped with an A17 Pro chip, enabling Apple Intelligence on the device:

This rumor proved to be wrong.
On the other hand, though, you’ve got to admit that it makes perfect sense that tomorrow the M4 MBA will be launched. We don’t need to be Mark Gurman to connect the dots and guess that the MBA refresh is coming very, very soon. It is not the first time Apple makes a refresh of the whole lineup on consecutive week days. And it is clear from Tim Apple’s teaser that the MacBook Air is getting its refresh.

Now, my only question is if Apple will keep an M2 or M3 MBA on sale, or if they will cleanup the Mac lineup even further leaving only the M4 model. After all, they have had all the Christmas time to sell most of the remaining stock of M2 and M3 MBA…

They haven’t got much to show to be honest. They could have make an event updating all their computers at once and next to it the whole iPad lineup. Something serious hardware companies do once a year or when new chips/tech comes available.
I would prefer if they went back to updating all their Macs at one event in January every year and all the iPads at one event in March. That would make it easier to choose which model to buy.

Will it have a 25% tarriff charge added on for US buyers ? we can presume there is a certain amount of base models already in stock which are exempt , but any BTO models ? or units bought 2-3 weeks from now ?
I could *really* use a 32gb MBA as 16gb just doesn't cut it even for regular use.

"Rumours" - the key word to understand Gurman. Not notices carved in stone, official notes or announcements. Things can change internally, sources can be mislead or just lying. Rumours, just that.

Fair enough, but too often its presented as 'this is what you can expect.' I always use a grain of salt but I think the reporting should too.

Accept then there would be huge logistics bottlenecks and people would complain about not getting inventory fast enough....

Me too, instead they spread it out for years now. Same chip, or they skip a chip. Their upgrades are minimalistic and almost not even worth the Word upgrade.

Why wouldn't 16GB not be enough for regular use? I can imagine if you run virtual machines but regular users watch youtube and surf the web and do email. iMovie is probably the most challenging we ever do.

It isn’t like they sell their computers by the millions at once. Dell or HP don’t seem to have those problems with their gear and are selling more than Apple in computers. Also the screens of Apple laptops aren’t the latest and greatest in tech what could delay those orders.

Now why couldn't all 4 of these products be an apple event with the headliner being the iPhone 16e?

Does Apple only do Apple Events for iPhones and WWDC now?

Apple has been stretching this event thing really thin as it is. They will have a hardware event, but talk about OS features over and over. There’s not a whole lot that’s new to discuss.

What would the event for an M4 MacBook Air that received no changes other than an updated SBC look like? They would go on and on about how many transistors are in M4 then they would go on and on about AI. Then they would introduce the iPad Air and go over the same things they just went over when they were talking about the MacBook Air. Then they would bring out the iPhone 16e introducing it. Then they would go over the same things they discussed already twice. This is why Apple is realizing the event thing isn’t so great. Without anything to say it’s hard to make it past 15 minutes of actual information. They have to put so much filler into the event that it becomes a waste of time to watch. Don’t get me wrong it’s still entertaining to see the special effects and the cool products but they need more to show off if they’re going to have an event.

How about being future proof? Apple Intelligence uses lots of RAM. And while it’s useless today, I don’t want to have to buy a new computer in a year or two from now because 16GB is insufficient to use it in the future.

Still synonymous to rumours. However someone else presents it, Gurman is passing on the rumours.

Me thinks you missed my point. Not surprised. It wasnt about Gurman :)

But still doesn't take away from the fact, whether Gurman is the middle man or not, his reputation is not improved with rumors that often are modified each day until he is right, or false all together.

You must be joking. Apple is in the same ballpark as Dell and HP for units sold in the US. They're literally all in the millions of units. Not at once, as that's not how laptops sales work, but spread over the year. :D

Dell or HP have an even larger skew, and are rarely even talked about. where are you getting your data from? And keep in mind we aren't just talking about computers, but iPads, which do sell in the millions. And whether the screens live up to your hopes, doesn't mean they are that easy to manufacture. Easier, yes. Easy, no.

Speaking of easy, it's easy to wish for simultaneous releases, but ignores that cash flow, inventory, need to be spread out over the year.

People would be disappointed less if they tempered their expectations to the possible.

Crazy that in 2025 we will have a NEW:

M3 iPad Air
M4 MacBook Air
M5 MacBook Pro

Interesting point, one could argue you have ranked them in terms of expected 'horse power.' If Apple released an M5 iPad people would be saying 'what a waste of power, who needs that?' Likewise, despite people hoping for an MacBook Air to replace an MacBook Pro, thats not how Apple is positioning.

Well, the numbers sold worldwide don’t lie. Apple definitely isn’t in the same ballpark as HP or Dell and the world is bigger than the USA alone:

Sitting here with my M1 pair - MBA and iPad Pro - and I couldn’t be more indifferent about either of these new “updates”.
