It's unclear if the thinner display technology would translate to overall thinner iPhones next year.

The usage of Y-OCTA only reduces the thickness by 50um.

And I actually want thinner iPhone, iPad Pro thickness at Sub 6mm would be perfect, I just dont want it as a Trade Off of Battery. I think this iPhone 11 generation has probably reach the point where it is good enough for most people.

And the next 10 years will be a slow, iteration of iPhone trying to reduces its thickness back to or below iPhone 6.

What people dont seems to understand is that we only have finite amount of time, Apple could reduces its power usage by 50% or double the battery by 100%, meaning double the amount of usage, but people dont have that much time. If you are using your Phone 6 hours a day, are you going to use it for 12 hours?

I think we need to stop trying to make everything thinner & lighter. Focus on better and longer battery life, stronger glass, and durability.
that's exactly what they did, in case you didn't notice... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Not entirely sure what you're getting at because as far as I know the iPhone hasn't become thinner or fundamentally lighter (if at all) in generations.
correct. But everyone here seems eager to write that non sense...

I hate to say it but I'm dreading the 2020 iPhones.

I've upgraded yearly (I know it doesn't make sense, but I like to) and currently use the iPhone 11 Pro. That's a 5.8 inch screen. I can *NOT* use the Max with its 6.5 inch screen, its simply to large for how I use my phone one handed in many situations. I think the 5.8 inch size is perfect although I think I could still manage with a 6.1 inch screen like on my kid's XR.

So.... the 2020 Pro iPhones will come in a 5.4 inch (0.5 smaller which is actually a LOT smaller!) and a 6.8 inch version (0.3 more than the already to large 6.5 inch screen on the current MAX)! To me this harms BOTH Pro phones. You make the smaller one too small, and the large one already pushing boundaries for even those who like them even larger. I suppose bezels could *maybe* get a hair smaller to help but they are pretty darn thin already on the 11.

I don't understand what Apple is doing here? I don't want to get the low-end mid-tier "12" with the 6.1 inch screen, I want to get a Pro and I'm willing to spend... but it seems they are trying to make both Pro models less desirable?

Does a thinner display mean thinner phone? Or does it mean more room for a larger battery?

We reached the breaking point (literally) of phone thinness.
If there's anything Apple should take away from its recent lessons is that thinness for the sake of thinness isn't always a good thing, especially if other features suffer for it.

Virtually no one outside of Apple wants thinner phone. BATTERY LIFE is our main concern.

I want thinner phones. At least as long as I have to put a stupid case on it.
The iPhone 11 with a case attached is a fat monster!
I was sticking to my iPhone X because of this...

I’m actually one of those people that are not happy with going to a smaller 5.4 Pro EVER.

Since I thought 5.8 was already too small and went to a 6.5” 11 Pro Max. I think 6.5 is large enough anything bigger would be unwieldy.

I’m pretty happy I guess I went with the 6.5 11 Pro Max this year but I’m not gonna be happy going to a 5.4 and the 6.7 may be too big.

I may have to go to android.

I’m one of the people who are stuck in between these sizes.

So basically, No Samsung, no Y-Octa, no smaller pro model. Bottom line, the Apple fans that have been wanting a smaller more compact pro model, have Samsung to thank for its existance. I've said it again and again, Samsung's innovations benefit the industry and dictate the limits of other OEM's products. True industry leaders.

I don't know if I'm more excited for the iPhone 12 Pro Max or iOS 14 supposed redesign. If the former is considerable I'd be tempted to upgrade.
I've yet to see any rumors indicating iOS 14 is getting a redesign

5.4" is for women--and my wife, all her friends will be very happy with that. Not all but a significant % of women have been clamoring for smaller phones--if its all screen--it'd be about the perfect size
Women want something that fits in their hand easier and don't have the phone needs that men do.

only rumor we have seen lately is apple already pushing features from iOS 14 to 15 to help get 14 be a more stable release on day 1 compared to the disaster of 13.

I don't think it's "for the sake of thinness."

If it wasn't for Apple pushing the envelope and driving thin phones, we'd all be carrying around chunky phones reminiscent of the early 2000s.

There's still a ways to go and I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple comes up with.

I'm really skeptical about the 5.4" rumor. With smaller bezels they could easily go from 6.5 to 6.7" on the Pro Max. Why is the point of reduce a "Pro" model? Price related? The entry level Pro? I don't think so. They know that the 5.8 have lot of fans and I think that most people that carry the phone in their pockets/have average hands size doesn't want a Max model. Also there's the SE2 model in the works. I believe that will have SE2 = 5.4", 12 PRO (Or just "PRO") = 6.1" and 12 PRO MAX (Or just "PRO MAX") = 6.7". With the "XR"/11 being discontinued. Also 5G hardware will take more space inside, and antenna space too and need more power (bigger battery). Hard to implement in a small body. 🤷‍♂️

I have the 11 Pro Max. I like the longer-life battery and the phone is not slippery like the X. The phone could be lighter.

A lighter iPhone 12, grippier, and even longer battery life would be good. Better cameras. Perhaps 1 more lens for clear close-up pictures (E.g. film insect).

I'm feeling some schadenfreude regarding the folks complaining that 5.4" will be too small, while those of us who've been wanting a smaller flagship haven't had anything for years. It's part of the reason I'm still on my 8 from over 2 years ago, because Apple hasn't given me a product I want to buy. Everyone will be making compromises though, as people who wanted a smaller phone wanted something closer to 5" than 5.5".

This is my frustration, exactly. To me, the 5.8" is the perfect size. Don't want to go to a phone that's smaller (5.4") or less capable (6.1"). 2020 may be the first time that I'll skip a year, even though I'm on the annual iPhone Upgrade Program.
