They needed something that would fit with the bloody rim around the camera?

I'm not a designer or anything but like... you'd think you could kill 2 birds with 1 stone by making the phone 1mm thicker, hiding the camera's rim and spreading the battery evenly using the newfound thickness.

But this way they get the best business option: They can make the phone thinner, which they can charge more for as it's a "feature". Then they can charge additional money for a battery case.

From the customers perspective, I don't think anyone would care if the phone was another 1-2mm thick and had the extra battery capacity. But that isn't good for business.

i could easily explain the reasoning behind: charging the magic mouse, charging the first apple pencil, the notch, removal of a headphone jack, and etc...

but the first Apple iPhone battery case design is something i cannot figure out.

Don't tell us about the removal of classical headphone socket or the ugliest notch: both not really necessary.

The notch is a design accident: if you wish an unbroken view on video/game/photo you get a smaller active display area with black frame – so the full display look is a lie. Ugly for all who kept their clear view ;)

It seems the ability to wirelessly charge the battery pack (which in turn charges the phone) is an unknown at this time. If it can't do that, it's not very "smart" and I'm not buying. I don't charge my phone with a cable any more but a battery case that I can leave attached and wirelessly charge? I'd buy that. I know at least one company out there is doing something like this but I forget which...

If it will fit the X, I will get one. Had one for my 7 and always came in handy

It should, but leaving that unsightly 1mm gap under the camera... (i.e. fitting X into an Xs case...)
Although unlikely... Really hope the three models would be iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone Xs instead...

In a fantasy world sure. In the real world more battery (and 1-2mm don't seem a lot until you realise is for all the surface of the device) means more weight, more heat, more money. So once you have more heat you need more space and 2mm are not 2mm anymore, and you have to ask more money for a device that's ticker and weight more. What do you get in exchange? If one thinks about it" nothing. iPhone batteries right now easily last for more than day. Adding a bit more capacity is meaningless. If at the end of the day I have 10 or 14% of battery I have no benefit. I have to charge the phone the same. Apple doesn't increase the battery capacity in small increments because until you have to charge it every night, from a User Experience perspective it doesn't change nothing. They would only sell a bulkier, thicker, heavier, warmer device for more money with no real advantage.

I can’t imagine needing this for my XS Max, even under intensive use, the battery life is incredible on this phone. And as large as smart phones are, I personally would not appreciate the added heft carrying in the pocket.

Are you asking or telling? Regardless, for those who want this, they don’t care what it looks like, they want the extended battery life, so functionality trumps looks in this instance.
Ahha, I see. BTW, I was both asking and telling!

Going to be hard to choose between my Pitaka case and this for my Max.

For most people, it won’t be needed.

But I can see situations where it would be nice when you combine heavy usage, a little gaming, and poor cellular connectivity. Will be nice to have that extra cushion, at least occasionally.

Because Tim Cook is God and he has bestowed upon us a new case. Be fruitful and multiply.

Well with all the extra productivity you will gain from the case you should be able to buy a XS MAX 512 GB. We had a working brunch earlier. We came to the conclusion that the only way to keep profits up is not to drop prices but increase the productivity of our customers. Have a member of your family that is under performing? This is the perfect stocking stuffer for them! Merry Christmas on behalf off the entire team at Apple.

So much negativity in this thread!

If you don’t like Apple’s pricing strategy, don’t buy their newest phones. Android options are available or older iPhones. I do tend to wish the prices were a bit cheaper, but I’m not shareholder nor am I on the board making these business decisions.

If you don’t like the battery case, don’t buy it.

Apple has indeed made their phones thicker in recent iterations, and added significant new features that also take up space (larger speakers, larger vibration motors, larger sensors, etc). It’s all about trade offs for space and I think apple has done a fine job for the average customer.

For power users who need more battery/runtime, this will be a good choice.

Definitely. If you’re in intensive user into streaming lots of music, movies and other various media on your iPhone, then this battery pack would be worth whatever Apple charges, especially if you’re someone that’s mobile without not always having a charger available.

Bring them on! Xr color matched versions please! Awesome especially if they fold wireless charging in (it'd be very Apple to do that).

Kinda tough to make that argument though - The Xs Max has longer battery life than the old champ (8 Plus), while the Xr goes another hour (or two) beyond the Xs Max.

Now if you're talking about Motorola and what they did with the Z Play (on the Z2 and Z3 Play) where battery capacity went down alot and the users are almost forced into buying a battery pack you're supposition has real traction.

But Apple is increasing it's battery life of its new phones, not shortening it. That said lots of people will want this extra capacity (including myself).

Apple appears to be readying the release of a new Smart Battery Case for the iPhone XS, and possibly versions for the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR too, based on information uncovered by 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo.

iphone-xs-smart-battery-case.jpg

Rambo uncovered references to three model identifiers for the case in iOS code, including A2070, A2071 and A2171, suggesting that Apple could release the case in three different sizes for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Another identifier found in the iOS code reportedly points towards a 2018 release.

Apple's first Smart Battery Case was for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, and was equipped with a 1,877 mAh battery that protruded out of the back of the case. Apple later released an iPhone 7 version with a similar design but larger 2,365 mAh battery. Both cost $99 in the United States, with the latter still available.

9to5Mac earlier found an icon in the watchOS 5.1.2 beta that appears to correlate to the new Smart Battery Case. The icon suggests the case will have a Lightning connector, but it's unclear if wireless charging will be supported. It also looks like the new cases might not have a "chin" extending past the bottom of the iPhone.

It's not out of the ordinary for Apple to release new accessories in December, with the original Smart Battery Case launching this month in 2015 and AirPods launching in December 2016 after a multi-month delay.

The fact that Apple is about to release these cases shows what it an insult it was to those of us who bought an iPhone X that Apple never bothered to offer one to us. Likewise its failure to offer silicone cases for its recent iPads.
