Apple appears to be readying the release of a new Smart Battery Case for the iPhone XS, and possibly versions for the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR too, based on information uncovered by 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo.

iphone-xs-smart-battery-case.jpg

Rambo uncovered references to three model identifiers for the case in iOS code, including A2070, A2071 and A2171, suggesting that Apple could release the case in three different sizes for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Another identifier found in the iOS code reportedly points towards a 2018 release.

Apple's first Smart Battery Case was for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, and was equipped with a 1,877 mAh battery that protruded out of the back of the case. Apple later released an iPhone 7 version with a similar design but larger 2,365 mAh battery. Both cost $99 in the United States, with the latter still available.

9to5Mac earlier found an icon in the watchOS 5.1.2 beta that appears to correlate to the new Smart Battery Case. The icon suggests the case will have a Lightning connector, but it's unclear if wireless charging will be supported. It also looks like the new cases might not have a "chin" extending past the bottom of the iPhone.

It's not out of the ordinary for Apple to release new accessories in December, with the original Smart Battery Case launching this month in 2015 and AirPods launching in December 2016 after a multi-month delay.

[doublepost=1544309172][/doublepost]The new case looks much better.

The original looked pregnant, this one looks set to give birth any day now. Congratulations. I hope it’s an SE 2 myself, but as long as it’s healthy and has no antenna or screen issues...
LOL, I love this! There needs to be an iSE-II...X. Because... Apple.

Here’s my prediction for the next iPhone.

Wider and taller than previous iPhone models, slimmer thanks to the previous removal of most of the rigid internal frame, the headphone jack, and NOW, the battery! Also, the “iPhone Double-XR+(II) proPhone Phone Edition,” will work with the iStub, a small iPencil designed JUST for that phone. Construction of the iStub will be *extra* green, as the miniature iFactory that makes the iStub will be colocated with Steve Jobs’ grave, and powered by electrodes hooked up to commutators attached to the corpse at head and foot. Jobs’ spinning in his grave over the mockery of Apple that Cook & Company have made will provide all the power needed to drive all the machines, lights, etc. in the dimminutive structure.

The next iPhone itself will be even slimmer thanks to not coming with a battery. The battery/case will horribly ugly and stupid-looking, and it will be sold exclusively through Apple.com and at Apple stores for the low low price of only several hundred dollars extra. (Charger not included, that costs extra.). Also, it will be proprietary and have its own communication hardware, and will wirelessly check in periodically with Apple... the official puprose of this will be to help prevent theft. The *real* purpose will be to make it so hard to make an aftermarket / 3rd party replacement batteries that by the time someone figures it out, the iPhone itself is obsolete.

Further evidence of this: Apple has already made its already confusing product naming scheme even more insane than usual. Either THAT, or no one at Apple can count past TEN.

What comes aftern 10? At apple, a bunch of different, seemingly meaningless and confusing letters.

I think the need for these sort of cases is less than in the past. Low battery mode works really well for extra long days (just turn it on start of a long day, yet to not have it last crazy long time). Also, there are tons of portable battery packs that work well and are in many ways better because it doesnt have to be awkwardly attached to the iphone all the time.

And, Apple could just make iPhones 3mm thicker and negate much of the need for these sort of cases.

I agree. I’ve got several external battery packs in my house. My bag has at least one in it at all times. I really don’t see the need for something like this.

I had the same opinion until I actually held one of their silicon cases in real life. They’re actually really nice: rigid inner backbone and microfiber inner. The silicone feels nice to the touch too; none of that flabby, sticky stuff I was accustomed to

I don't mine the silicon either. I find it's great for protection. BUT, the battery hump is one of the ugliest cases EVER on the market. THEY made no attempt at aesthetics and focused on functionality! Which is completely the opposite of other products, where it is all aesthetics and little on the functionality!

Jobs approved all the products, and had a handle on the company as Apple was his baby. Tim just treats it as a cash machine and doesn't really care about the products. Tim is no visionary that's for sure

I love my iPhone 6 smart battery case so very much. I am on an iPhone 8 Plus right now so it doesn’t look like they will be making one for this phone at all, but eventually when I do move to the newer phones, I’m definitely going to be getting one of these. I could care less about what others think it looks like, the utility was amazing!

MacRumors: I wish Apple put function over form!
Also MacRumors: Ew, this case is ugly.
You seem share the rare Ivvy lack of awareness that an even, square form factor migh have been better. Or anything close
(Btw. Psychologists relate this to typical annorexia behavior: “Either love me or hate me”-complex)

If it's like the 6S case, just shows how lazy and sloppy apple has become , taking engineering and design about ten minutes to stick a battery to a case.

Also macrumors : why not just make the iPhone 3mm thicker ? Instead of two devices that fail in regards to form and function :)

I owned the 6S battery case, and it was poor in function and form - happy it achieved one or the other, not fail on both accounts

This. Funny how people talk about how beautifully sleek and stylish the iPhone is but have no problems with dongles and hump-backed battery cases.

I’m totally excited! Having used a 7 with a battery case I think it handles just fine and the hump isn’t a big deal.

If it supports Qi wireless charging I’ll be even more excited.

Big plus is that you’ll get an actual battery widget to tell you the charge level versus third party cases that have hard to interpret/inaccurate LED dots on the back of the case.

Hope it works with iPhone X : )
Im sure it will.

I can’t imagine needing this for my XS Max, even under intensive use, the battery life is incredible on this phone. And as large as smart phones are, I personally would not appreciate the added heft carrying in the pocket.

Are you asking or telling? Regardless, for those who want this, they don’t care what it looks like, they want the extended battery life, so functionality trumps looks in this instance.
I’m one of those people who starts to get twitchy when my battery gets below 40%, so this is a product for me and my Xs Max. Better than switching on power saving mode (which they should really make for iPads and laptops as well, but that’s a discussion for another day).

That is exactly why I like Apple’s battery cases, they support everything the iPhone does without the case, like a Lightning connector, passthrough iTunes sync, etc. So if the new one supports wireless charging I am going to get one.

And you know it won’t be bad quality like the cheap ones on amazon made by unknowns. I’m checking macrumors everyday waiting for it come out

Let’s be happy that the inner Freudian cause of Jonis’ bump anomaly hasn’t (yet) led to this

Funny enough - I gave away my MacBook Pro 2017, and went back to the 2015 model. Apart from some small speed updates the 2015 is superior in nearly every way. Simple things like MagSafe and dongles made the 2017 experience feel like a windows machine, compromises to sell accessories .
