Apple Expected to Replace Notch With Pill-and-Hole on All iPhone 15 Models

All four iPhone 15 models slated for release next year will feature a pill-and-hole display design that replaces the notch, according to display industry consultant Ross Young, who has a respectable track record with display-related information.

In a tweet, Young shared a roadmap that indicates both standard and Pro models of the iPhone 15 will feature the pill-and-hole layout, which refers to a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID sensors and a hole for the front camera. By comparison, only iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to switch to the pill-and-hole design this year, with the standard iPhone 14 models expected to retain the same notch as iPhone 13 models.

Young believes that Apple's end goal is to move Face ID sensors and the front camera completely under the display. If development is successful, he expects this transition to begin with under-screen Face ID on iPhone 16 Pro models in 2024, followed by under-screen Face ID and an under-screen front camera on iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026.

Young said the pill-and-hole design will result in iPhone 14 Pro models having slightly larger screen sizes compared to iPhone 13 Pro models.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 14 lineup in September, barring any major supply chain disruptions. For the Pro models, an upgraded 48-megapixel rear camera is expected to enable 8K video recording, up from 4K currently.

Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, has in the past accurately revealed that the sixth-generation iPad mini would feature an 8.3-inch display and that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models would feature ProMotion.

Oh, so iPhone 14 still gets notch. Damn. I was hoping all the iPhone 14 models would get the "i", not just the Pros.

Mind you, the main reason I was hoping for this was just to get that battery percentage indicator back, so not the end of the world I guess.

Changes with the notch change, screen size change, weight increases, and bigger camera bump don't bother me. I am worried the demand will be too high for this phone and supply will be too low this year with all the lockdowns.

Not only that but the notch is likely cheaper to implement. Why are they spending more money to make something that doesn't look quite as good?

Cool, so we gain a few millimeters of unusable screen space that will be even more distracting than a notch. Glad Android phones don't get all the great features.

Wish I got a penny for all the time and effort spent on this. If it weren't all the articles and complaints I probably wouldn't even remember there is a notch. I watch videos all the time and never notice it

Unfortunately Apples iPhone upgrades have become far and few in between. With all the patents Apple holds for new technology it’s strange only a micro amount see day of light in the iPhone
Yes there’s always a new chip and better camera but most Apple fans want more

Face ID is currently the superior tech for facial recognition. It is not yet under the display because the integrity is compromised. Once they master it, the world changes. Suddenly the potential exists for any screen you look at could be covering hidden facial recognition technology. Hidden. Big opportunity for marketers... and scammers.
