That my impression, the space in-between pill and hole is more annoying then just a notch. You're not really gaining usable screen space back.I still find this pill-and-hole layout looking less elegant and more distracting than the notch, especially its smaller latest variant.
Never considered this. Quite a few security implications there.Face ID is currently the superior tech for facial recognition. It is not yet under the display because the integrity is compromised. Once they master it, the world changes. Suddenly the potential exists for any screen you look at could be covering hidden facial recognition technology. Hidden. Big opportunity for marketers... and scammers.
Oh, so iPhone 14 still gets notch. Damn. I was hoping all the iPhone 14 models would get the "i", not just the Pros.
Mind you, the main reason I was hoping for this was just to get that battery percentage indicator back, so not the end of the world I guess.![]()
Pill, schmill. It's all about the camera, for me.
All four iPhone 15 models slated for release next year will feature a pill-and-hole display design that replaces the notch, according to display industry consultant Ross Young, who has a respectable track record with display-related information.

In a tweet, Young shared a roadmap that indicates both standard and Pro models of the iPhone 15 will feature the pill-and-hole layout, which refers to a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID sensors and a hole for the front camera. By comparison, only iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to switch to the pill-and-hole design this year, with the standard iPhone 14 models expected to retain the same notch as iPhone 13 models.
Young believes that Apple's end goal is to move Face ID sensors and the front camera completely under the display. If development is successful, he expects this transition to begin with under-screen Face ID on iPhone 16 Pro models in 2024, followed by under-screen Face ID and an under-screen front camera on iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026.
Young said the pill-and-hole design will result in iPhone 14 Pro models having slightly larger screen sizes compared to iPhone 13 Pro models.
Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 14 lineup in September, barring any major supply chain disruptions. For the Pro models, an upgraded 48-megapixel rear camera is expected to enable 8K video recording, up from 4K currently.
Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, has in the past accurately revealed that the sixth-generation iPad mini would feature an 8.3-inch display and that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models would feature ProMotion.

Is the notch really so bad that a pill and hole are better?
This is a non-upgrade they are selling us as an upgrade.
There is no practical reason this pill is better than the notch.
Cool, so we gain a few millimeters of unusable screen space that will be even more distracting than a notch. Glad Android phones don't get all the great features.
My theory :How much more screen real estate is salvaged with this pill? As if the space above and in-between the two cut-outs are even usable?
What am I missing here?
If it's any consolation, I am in the camp where I'd be absolutely stunned if Apple let us have the Battery Percentage back on the Pro Models with the Pill + Hole cut outs. They just seem so stubbornly adamant on not letting us have a feature so essentially practical.
When the notch size was reduced this time around, there was more than enough space already to add a battery percentage indicator, especially on the Pro Max. But no. Not a whiff of that anywhere in sight.
For current Apple? Nah. 4 years of planned iterative updates sounds spot on.Ross is a very credible leaker in my opinion, but his roadmap until iPhone 18 is kinda ridiculous. There are so many things that can change since then
Interesting theory.My theory :
The vertical space between the phone border and the hole define the camera module size you can use. Pushing the camera down free space to use a larger and better selfy camera. But then a notch will end up looking way to big.
So, it is not about the notch, but about a better front facing camera.
Don't forget the screen is slightly taller though, because of the reduced bezel size.I like the aesthetics of the pill and hole. But as others mentioned, I feel this actually REDUCES usable screen space vs the notch, as the pill and hole are further down the screen than the notch, and isn't much narrower either. Though we'll see what iOS does with it.
it's actually a sideways "!"it looks like a sideways "i"
Is the notch really so bad that a pill and hole are better?
I think you are overestimating side-loading's ability to physically change an LCD screen. The notch is, was, and always will be, a design abomination. But wth is a pill and hole?! No notch, no hole, no pill(!). Apple are cruel. This is not the work of a master designers, it's the work of designers abusing an unfair monopoly and I cannot wait for side-loading and an open app store.
That's a compelling question. While desktop computers are still around, they're have become more narrowly focused in the sense that more people are inclined to chose a laptop or tablet unless they have a specific need for a desk-bound computer.Does anyone think there will be an iPhone 50? The reason why I ask, the desktop computer has been around for 50 years. The Xerox Alto or Parc all count as part of the lineage for this.
So, I just want to assume if computers have been around that long I would expect the same for smart phones.
Snake. SNAKE! SNAAAKE!!!!! Sorry, couldn't contain my inner nerd.?it's actually a sideways "!"
