I'm not a fan of the price hikes at all. Was just pointing out people's exaggerations. If the price stays the same this year, I'll probably be going back to Android again.

The "me" from five years ago would find this idea totally abhorrent. My my the difference five years makes.

The prices themselves don't really bother me; I can handle them. What does it for me is my perception of value. In that regard my opinion is the value Apple brings to the table today with their product lineup is at an all time low and has been on the downward trend since about 2014-15. Sure the iPhone X icosts $1500 - but it's not a $1500 phone.

I guess I'm unlike some people in that I do not exist to transfer wealth.

It's more about principle than price for me at this point. I can afford these devices just fine, but it's getting a bit ridiculous.

Best iPhone under SJ (iPhone 4 - 2010) started at $599, now it is $999. Is iPhone X 67% more innovative than the iPhone 4 was at the time of the release? I don't think so.
We all loved SJ, but you’re right that he totally missed the boat by not offering a premium version with some exclusive features alongside the iPhone 4. A lost opportunity!

I love how people judge Apple's "success" by how bloated its stock looks. Is that kind of "success" sustainable?
Give me one metric that supports AAPL’s valuation being bloated. Do you even follow the market? AAPL is trading under 19 times 2018 earnings and has $269B in cash.

They're proven 66.6% wrong. Two out of three ain't bad.
Sure Apple has made mistakes but things like the Airpods are just plain awesome and have become mainstream within less than a year. Apple can still innovate, they are just misguided in certain areas. When they have real focus, they can do things well.

But when you are beholden to Wall Street and have become the new Behemoth in town.....stuff happens.

Good explanation of how stupid these iPhone X demand rumors are.

People celebrating billionaires getting more billions for products that pale in comparison to their competition.

And charge more for the ‘privelege’.

Only Apple can do this.

I also celebrate billionaires getting more wins in seasons that were less exciting than their competition.

And they charge more for the 'privelege' to watch those games.

Anyone can do it.

I have as much of chance of being a Superbowl QB as I do a CEO of the largest company in the world. I also have little interest in doing those jobs. There is nothing wrong with being happy for people you watched struggle to succeed. Having watched college players and executives try stand out by being the best in their position I am proud of them when they are successful. We shouldn't badmouths the kid who wins the science fair five years in a row, nor should we badmouth the Little League MVP if they do it for just as long.

You don't like level of someones success? Fine. Go celebrate something else.

But it didn’t start at $599. That was the subsidized price. The actual cost was hundreds more. Phones are not subsidized anymore so the price tag consumers see is more.
When I go to AT&T or Verizon I don’t see full price I see monthly. Verizon show full price but it’s small print. The monthly installment price is in big, bold font.

Did the same thing in my head yesterday and bought more shares. Absolutely dead on accurate.
The WSJ and others can’t be bothered to pull up Apple’s financials to see how stupid these rumors are. But we’re supposed to believe this isn’t intentional and these articles are written in good faith. BS.

Oh it’s intentional. It’s also highly illegal so I don’t understand why we have his dog and pony show every quarter. Nikkei has done it before. It’s wiping a lot of shareholder value out very quickly and it’s just idiotic. I am buying more today. I might be wrong, but I will hold until the real facts change.

On your previous point, I try to tell people the $1000 price tag is almost meaningless. People buy everything on monthly payments and that’s what is advertised. You think people even care what the total price of a car is? They want to know the monthly payment.

It seems to me that despite all the hype about hitting that "magic" $1000 price point on iPhone X -- the reality is, most people get so much use out of their smartphone, they're fine paying that price for it, if they can afford it and want a good experience.

IMO, the primary reason iPhone X sales are sluggish is the fact that there are plenty of recently purchased iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models in service that people aren't quite done using yet. And beyond that, a certain number of people who ARE ready to replace one or to buy one to switch over from something else are fine with the iPhone 8 series. Like me, they may have a preference for a physical Home button to press, and not be so eager to re-learn how to swipe around to access some of the features.

I'm sure I'll buy an iPhone X at some point, but my 7 Plus w/256GB of storage is still doing everything I need at the moment. Additionally? The whole switchover process is kind of a pain. There's a lot of content to resync to the new phone ... apps to reinstall or reenter login/password info into if it didn't make the transition. Phone number has to be ported over correctly and new voicemail greeting recorded. Delete Bluetooth pairings to the old phone and add the new one to your devices, etc. Not the end of the world, obviously ... but another nagging thing to take some of your time away.

Get an iPhone SE which is cheaper(399) and way more powerful than iphone 4.
That would be the correct comparison .

Moderator Note:

Can everyone just give the 'Apple is doomed' crap a rest.

We don't care if you are pro-Apple, anti-Apple or indifferent, please give it a rest as it's not funny any more and is getting really boring.

Thank you.

Anymore? I don't think it was ever funny Olly - this can go for about 15 repetitive comment types on here.

Incorrect. $599 WAS the full price. The subsidized price was $199

Nope. The iPhone 4 was 1€ on a 39€ plan or 599€ without contract. Now it’s like 399€ for the iPhone X on a 49€ plan. Insanity.

No sir, you got it wrong. The subsidized price of the iPhone 4 was $199 and $299 for the 16GB and 32GB model respectively. $599 was the off-contract price for 16GB.

I stand corrected. Thanks.

Historical revisionism is hard in the age of the internet.

https://mashable.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-pricing-2/#cbrZHDjbjmq9

And I bought a 4S without contract in Canada for $649 CDN directly from Apple on pre-order day.

Or it was just an honest mistake. If it was historical revisionism in the age of the Internet then your comment is knee-jerk rush to condemn in the age of the Internet. Honestly, neither are a good look.

Back in 2010 all you needed was £500 and you would buy the latest iPhone! Now, you can't buy anything with £500.

But that was 8 years ago. For a start £500 in 2010 is a minimum of £640 today in just inflation alone - now lets take in the 20% drop in the pound due to Brexit, where it was $599 in the US and £500 over here, it's now parity with the dollar, so that £640 could go up to £740 easily - and £500 was only for the base model, the 32gb iPhone 4S was £599 which would be £765 today, and about £900 taking in the drop of the pound.

So if anything prices have gone up about £100, and it's not just Apple is it, ever manufacturers flag ship has gone up, Samsung and HTC also sell phones for the same as or close to the iPhone X price.

Come back in another 8 years and £1600 will be the norm for a flagship phone.
