if they wanna sell 6,000,000 (look at all those 0's) a month then apple will be lowering the price of these things to a base price of 400 or maybe 350 dollars.

However it is unlikely that will happen. There hasn't been any reduction in demand for the ipad so why lower the price if your already selling every device you roll off the line?

I am seeing for sure a front facing camera possibly a rear camera.
I see the same display (retina display would make the ipad cost 1,000+, and making yet another version for app developers to worry about)
512 ram for sure
possibly the same a4 chip (at this point there is no demand for a better processor in the ipad and as long as developers are happy i don't see apple upping specs for no reason apple normally doesnt get in spec wars with it's competitors and apple won't let battery life be effected for a small performance bump)
weight possibly reduced might use lighter weight materials to accomplish this.
32, 64, 128 GB versions.
same battery life.

A retina display would do nothing to developers other than require them to supply higher res images. It'll be likely imo that Apple moves to a dual-core chip at a lower frequency, which should offer more performance and less power usage than the A4. Hoping for less weight too!

I don't think there will be higher resolution model yet... maybe it'll be in the 2012 model. Apple is known for releasing smaller updates each year, so that there will be things to update every year. I think the next model will have more memory, maybe slighty faster processor, and camera for Facetime. The competitors won't have retina displays anytime soon, and they would be probably too expensive also. Current iPad is very competitive in the tablet market, so there's no need yet to do any huge improvements.

I doubt that the price points will increase. They could also sell the 1st gen iPad at a lower price, and the 2nd gen iPad at the current price points.

Since the iPad is the runaway über-technological hit of the past year, and it paved the way for the future format of computing while opening a new market, Apple should (hopefully is) putting all chips in. That means they will be making the iPad far more than it was and taking leaps in tech.

We all know they had already wanted to load the Pad with other features they removed to keep the price down at launch. Those are coming with bells on, I bet. If Apple sluggishly adds one low-res camera, then another, then a gyroscope, etc., it will drag down their edge. This next iPad will be best served by having all the iPhone tech bits added, with possibly more on higher end models.

It is possible that they shift 6 million a month if they do that and increase the ability for productivity on the iPad. Personally, the iPad is my target for a personal computer in 2013 or beyond, my old MacPro used only for pro-work needing higher processing power and software I purchased years ago.

My prediction is that the iPad 2 could go one of two ways:

1. Major improvements with a price increase

- retina display or fairly close to it.
- dual HD cameras
- major reduction in weight (From 1.62 lbs to 1.1~1.3 lbs)
- gyroscope

2. Minor improvements at the same price

- modest resolution increase (From 132 ppi to 180~220 ppi)
- a front facing SD camera. Maybe a rear-facing SD camera, too.
- significant reduction in weight (1.62 lbs to 1.3~1.5 lbs)
- gyroscope maybe

As long as there is a resolution increase and a weight reduction of some sort, I will get whatever Apple puts out. :)

Your #1 is purely insane. There is NO way to get that resolution AND lose weight. Unless you want a 10 minute battery life.

I think your #2 is there, and the gyroscope is a good probability.

I want an iPad, but will hold off until 2.0 arrives.
My 2011 wish-list:

1. iPad 2.0

2. Apple stock

I've had an iPhone since 2007, but may not keep one once the smaller iPad debuts! Maybe I'll get a trac-phone for emergencies!
2. I've owned my Apple Stock since 1991.

1. That makes the iPad 2 I will be purchasing FREE... :)

I think option 1 might cut into the MacbookAir and the Macs a little bit. So it's option 2. Apple will probably keep the 3G option available. So $499 for the cheapest WiFi iPad with the above improvements. I would get one if the display resolution went up enough.

Let's suppose Apple went with option 2. It would be like having a Pro option for the iPad. This is not entirely out of the question. One could even consider the iPhone to be the Pro option of the iPod Touch. They could make modest improvements to both models by next summer and then repeat the process every year.

As long as there is a resolution increase and a weight reduction of some sort, I will get whatever Apple puts out. :)

1 is about 3 generations worth of updates for apple.

2 is still too much:

-gyroscope
-Fronfacing camera ipod/iphone style
-512MB ram

Is about it I think.

Dont see resolution change or significant reduction in weight in this version

I wanted the first gen, but I was going for iPhone first, I have that now. And am patiently waiting for second gen.

The iPad 1 is certainly quite awesome, why not buy the second gen? I can only imagine it will be an improvement, no matter what. Unless of course, they make it 5 inches and remove the 9,7 inched version. lol

You answered your own question.Buy the first one because it's quite awesome.
My question is why do without for at least a year because the next model *might*be a compelling upgrade.Start playing that game and you'll never have one.

Lot of newbies astro-turfing to dampen xmas sales I see...

Reality Check - iPad 2 will be feature incremental improvements the way iPhone does, and is unlikely ship prior to June...

The fact that Apple is adding two more panel suppliers indicates that the panels will not be anything special.
The article mentioned touch panel suppliers. Touch panels and display panels are two separate components.

It'll be likely imo that Apple moves to a dual-core chip at a lower frequency, which should offer more performance and less power usage than the A4.
While the average clock speed of a dual-core chip could be lower for a given workload I don't think they would lower the peak clock, as that would potentially reduce performance for single-threaded workloads.

Your #1 is purely insane. There is NO way to get that resolution AND lose weight. Unless you want a 10 minute battery life.
iPhone 4 doubled the linear resolution over 3GS, has better battery life, is faster, yet weighs only 2g more.

I wonder just how much better the display will be? A Better display is about the only thing that might get me to get one. Depending if I can sell my 64gb 3g one for decent money.

I don't believe that there are that many people that are holding out; more along the lines of this is one huge tech wave that is still in the process of hitting everyone... after seeing what the first iPad can do I believe this will be the future of computing. Eventually we will all use cloud based computing and I could see us carrying our iPad from one place to the next and using it as a medium anywhere we go. It's not news that for the size and price point the iPad is outstanding, were doing things with this I would have never imagined 3 years ago.

Truthfully I can see this turning out like a cell phone it's just a matter of time before this becomes a "have to have" device rather than a "need to have"... i can see it now, "I'll send you the PDF to your iPad; just throw a digital signature on it so we can send up the report."

what about business/enterprise purchases?
people may be forgetting many businesses are buying these. perhaps the businesses out there have tested a few iPads in their current network and realizing everyone loves them and the ease of use, they are opting to upgrade their whole company in 2011. that can easily bump those numbers up.

Exactly. I know where I work we are currently testing ipad's. I can't say anything more than that.

Definitely looking forward to some of the upgrades that will go into the iP2.

I'm saving up to grab one. I'm in Canada, so I reckon I'll drive down to the States with some mates and lineup and grab one, just for the heck of it!

When people see they could buy a brand new 42" flat screen TV, or two Xbox360's, a quite high power laptop etc for that same amount of money, the iPad can't help but looked very overpriced.

On the contrary, the iPad is quite fairly priced. When it was just a rumor, people assumed it would start at $799 or even $999. There was quite an uproar when it was released starting at $499. The competitors ran back to the drawing board in a panic.

As for your examples, that's apples (ahem) and oranges. A TV or an Xbox cannot do what an iPad can do, so what's the difference how they are priced. If you want in on the tablet revolution in the new Tablet Era of computing, you get an iPad. If you want to vege out on the couch, you get yet another TV or game console.

Count me as one of those waiting for iPad 2.0
I finally mustered the discipline to wait.... doing good so far. ;)
I will be buying one first day..even if the new features are not "wow."
I will have waited more than long enough by then!
Delayed :apple:Christmas for me.

We have an iPad (wife got it as an award)...it's fine for our web surfing and email but I wouldn't plunk down $500 for the current 1.0 version.

If the next one has a video camera/Facetime as well as being a little snappier/quicker all around, I would spend the $500. I could see buying 2 of these...1 for us and 1 for the grandparents so they can see our little guy in action.

Or you could just order one online and save the humiliation of being seen/photographed in a queue outside a shop.

I truly think that if these expected sales numbers are to be achieved, the only way this will happen is with a price reduction. Most likely some will be at current price points, but look for the lowest current model to be offered at 100$ less or something.

I'm already getting iPad envy! ... I happen to know my wife is getting me a personalized 1.0 for xmas (saw the part number on the outside of the Fedex box). I'm sure there are plenty of others in the same situation.
