More than a year ago, November 2022, I toyed with the idea of getting an iPad Pro and maybe even the 12.9 to replace my old 10.5 Pro. But ultimately I reasoned I didn’t need that power or features for my iPad use. I went for the Air 5 with M1 and 64GB and I’ve been quite satisfied.

But the idea of a 12.9 Air with a friendlier price could well be a tempting upgrade several years sooner than I would normally have been thinking of an upgrade.

Hmm…

Context matters. For the way many average people use a computer an iPad works just as well if not better than a laptop for them in terms playing games, texting, watching video, email and consuming media. In that context an iPad is an ideal replacement for mainstream use.

But as a professional work station an iPad isn’t, or at least mighn’t be, a good alternative to a laptop. If you do something requiring a lot of data input through the keyboard a laptop remains the superior choice. If you do video editing, music editing or 3D modelling a laptop (or desktop) is superior to an iPad.
Most professionals have digital drawing pad for example hooked up with their Mac etc... Maybe small number are using iPads.

A steep increase in price will definitely cause the sales to drop. Hopefully the new OLED iPad Pros will not be having a significant price hike.

Thats like saying most users have a desktop computer and a small number have a laptop. iPads are great when it comes to things like drawing so if you are into it enough to have a drawing pad, then you probably have an iPad for when you don't want to bring your computer + pad.

Funny how OLED is getting cheaper everywhere else, yet Apple are rumoured to use it as a reason to dramatically raise prices

For example: the MSI 4k 32" QD-OLED monitor was recently announced at $949.99. And for anyone wondering, that's the same "oh so expensive" technology that Apple is rumoured to use for the iPad.

The price of that display is irrelevant. What's relevant is how much more expensive that QD-OLED monitor is compared to their 32" 4K LED one because that shows if there is a price increase for QD-OLED screens. Besides, I thought Apple was going to be using a customized QD-OLED panel which means it's not an off-the-shelf component.

Bros, my PS Vita from 2011 has a beautiful OLED screen. And I'm supposed to believe that the cost of an OLED screen over a pretty good LCD is >xxx

While you are correct that the OLED Vita did not cost more than the LED PSP, Apple isn't planning on using OLED tech from 2011.

Ipads are dead to me personally, I don't use mine anymore. Im more likely to get a Vision thing, if they come down in price over time. Our only use case, is the cheapest ones for our kids.

At one point. But my kids outgrew them quick. I don’t see a need or want for another iPad. Oled is too little too late. I might’ve cared about it before and probably did but not anymore.

My sticking point is macOS. Make it boot camp at the least and Apple will sell me another iPad.

'Shall I buy the new IPP OLED, the MacBook Air, or for a few hundred dollars more, the base MBP M3 pro?'

You're going to really have to love using your IPP at those prices.

For that price increase Apple should throw in M3, 16GB RAM, 512GB or even 1TB of storage AND/OR option to run. MacOS apps, at least when docked to supposedly new magic keyboard or any external keyboard/mouse combo.
No sane person will buy an iPad for 1500$ or 1699/1799€ in EU pricing with barebones 8GB/128GB specs.

It's cheaper than existing OLED Monitors currently on the market, which offer a higher resolution. It's actually less than what I paid for a 32" Mini-LED display last year

How many are there really doing that? Millions?

not surprised with the rumoured prices.

apple likely expect more to go for 12.9 air if they want a bigger cheaper ipad.

Well, I have one of those massive TOTL pen displays hooked to the Mac, touch screen and all… but the past two years or so, I’ve done more than 75% of my professional and personal artworks on my 12.9” m1 iPad Pro.

It helps me get away from my desktop, and brings faint vibes of my traditional sketching process, thanks to its form factor and accompanying freedom to be anywhere and yet be productive.

If the price hike includes an even larger iPad Pro, I will buy.

Go for your life.

Come at me but even M1 is still overkill and not taken advantage simply due to restrictions by iPadOS. You can even argue how "sustainable" Apple actually is, releasing a new tablet "just because".

It's not even meant in a bad way, I guess I am just saying an iPad from 3 (?) years ago is still running perfectly, which is actually great!
I think they use M series chips mainly because it saves them the cost of bothering to develop a chip that falls in between the iPhone A series chip and M series Mac chip,
