This pretty much sums up this article. Say less!

I don't think Apple needs to be leading in generative AI. Apple's strength–and blockbuster products–has always been in taking technologies and products launched by others to the next step by applying its UI, UX, design, and marketing expertise. Apple can watch and learn from the current frenzy...then (ideally) come out with an :apple:GPT or iGPT after all the hype and starry-eyed media coverage recedes.
I agree. And what sort of "product" would "AppleGPT" be anyway? It's a feature to integrate across the entire Apple ecosystem and that will happen in a deliberate and thoughtful manner I think. It will also happen through improvements to Siri, not via a separate product. An example might be asking Siri to compose a reply to an email.

The problem I see for Apple is that they're already quite far behind everyone else and so far there's no indication whatsoever that Apple is capable of taking anything AI-related to the "next step." They were first to market with Siri and then got lapped multiple times by the competition. They simply don't seem capable of catching up. This also seems to be a largely self-inflicted wound because of their privacy-centric approach to everything. How can an AI assistant help you if it can't learn everything about you?

I don't think VR/AR is the next big thing. The next big thing will be a conversational UI/UX like the Star Trek computer. Phones aren't going away. The product that dethrones the iPhone the way the iPhone dethroned Blackberry and every other "smartphone" of that era is the product that successfully integrates a conversational UI/UX. I see no indication at this point that Apple is capable of building such a product. They also seems to be focused on trying to make "spatial computing" happen instead of building what people clearly want, an even more personal product.

Steve Jobs was right about touch. Multi-touch made the iPhone more personal. It made us feel a deeper connection to our devices. How do we take personal to the next level? Talk. We converse with our devices.

The first person I thought of when I read this was pro-Apple analyst Neil Cybart who made fun of Microsoft and Google’s recent keynotes because they mentioned AI so much.

Lol @ their stock spiking after this little article. Apple needs to mention AI in their presentations at least 100 times like Google. The hype boys will go nuts.

Runaway trains crash. The GPT hype will too.

It's already getting a lot less press and coverage, now that people have caught on to its limitations.
ChatGPT usage I think has gone down by 15-20% in past couple months. It will settle at a steady pace.

Well that was Google who said, 'AI' over 100 times.

Siri needs a huge bump in IQ. It’s one of the few Apple products that doesn’t live up to Apple’s usual high standards. More frankly, Siri is a bit of a disgrace to the company in my opinion. I have no idea why they’ve neglected this technology for so long.

I have a question: If Apple is working on 'AppleGPT'. Does Apple really know what to do with it?

Apple doesn't even have its own search engine capabilities. Microsoft has BING then you have Google Search Engine and so many other search engine platforms where AI GPT can be used.
Seems like they've been working on a search engine for a while now. Maybe their continued loss of talent to Google is rooted in their prior hesitancy with AI GPT? Certainly, would be interesting to see what they can do with a privacy-centered approach. Hopefully the end of Siri as we know it. https://www.macrumors.com/2022/12/19/apple-to-launch-search-engine-to-rival-google/

Nope. You have no idea what Apple GPT is or will be. If you think Siri is got model, I have a bridge to sell.
You're right - we don't know what (or if) Apple is working on a "ChatGPT" but to say Siri will have nothing to do with it is wrong. It probably won't be Siri as we know it but rather a kernel of Siri much in the way iOS was a fork of OSX

I know. I’m saying Apple would skyrocket if they followed what’s trendy. Nvidia, Google, Meta, etc. have been obnoxious with buzzwords in their presentations whereas Apple use their own terms.

Personally I prefer Apple’s approach, yes it is less functional than other AI assistants but privacy matters more to me in that area than functionality. I’m glad they aren’t abandoning their principals just to catch up or surpass their competitors. For people that don’t care as much about privacy they have other options they can use. I’m glad there is choice, and I’m glad there is a company that has similar priorities in areas that matter to me.

If Siri is an indication. It will probably be able to make screen recordings in about 10 years.
It could already do that in a beta. But then Apple took it away, just like they took away siri‘s, ability to search photos according to location, objects, etc. like visual lookup can do.
