I work with solar technology. Trust me, using it would boost the cost of the phone exponentially. There is no way they will introduce this.

Dumb me, when I first read 'charging', I thought it is referring to a different way Apple is going to charge money for the iPhone ;)

Ditto, especially considering the way the thread title is phrased.

...'New Way of Charging' for 2012 iPhone

It would be cool of the new standard port would be thunderbolt.

At which end? There's billions of $ invested in integrating via the Universal Dock Connector. Integrated car kits, docking stations, etc. At the computer end, they'd have to ship a USB adapter with every phone.

it better have more features than that. really the iPhone for 2011 needs to be really good for apple to gain some ground back from android.

Android is software and comparable to iOS, not rumored future iPhones. Compare iPhone hardware and how well it works with iOS to the top of the range android capable phones running the latest software and you will see Apple is well on top.

This is not to mention the service offered by apple for phone repairs etc.

Liquidmetal

Does anybody think Apple may finally release the Liquidmetal fuel-cell battery they patented earlier this year. If it has a thirty day battery life, who cares how you charge it..

Very well said!
Kinetic is an option, but what about the people who don't move their phones around?

I'm barely chugging along with my iPhone 3G, so i know for a fact that i'll be upgrading to the iPhone 5. But I plan on selling my iPhone 5 for the iPhone 6 at the rate these rumors are pointing to an awesome upgrade.

Can someone who has sold their iPhone n-1 device for the iPhone n, tell me how the procedure goes? Because i'm stuck in a long contract once i get my iPhone 5.

Hey, don't feel alone, I did the same thing! I was kinda startled hoping it wasn't something too bad.

As for the kinetic energy idea, if they could pull it off, that would be pretty cool. Gotta agree with the first person who brought that up, Apple does tend to like technology that has matured enough to be more feasable.

I love the idea of kinetic energy but I believe you missed one point..practicality. It works for watches but for iOS devices it will be harder to implement. But if anyone can do it Apple will.

If this "new charging method" turns out being Kinetic based, it will undoubtedly be to supplement traditional charging, not replace it. So people who are behind a desk a lot with the phone just in a resting state will probably not benefit much.

It's about time. Next to my 3 year old MacBook with its MagSafe charger, the 30 pin connector for charging mi iPad looks like something out of the dark ages.

Regards the EU regulations, my impression is that it has to be possible to use the mandated standard, but I don't see this precluding an alternative being offered in addition.

I bet they will harvest existing radio waves (Radio, Television, etc) to continually trickle charge the internal battery.

Nokia labs have been experimenting with this. If they can inductively harvest sufficient milliwatts continually, then you would have a cell phone that never needs explicit (user initiated) charging. It could work because we essentially live inside of a big microwave oven.

Below is an old link describing Nokia's lab work.

What u are missing is the kinetic energy would require moving parts. In no way would Apple dare introduce moving parts to the iPhone. That would create massive warranty issues. Could u just imagine how much could go wrong with that device. I think if they could add a transparent layer of solar PV to the glass it could help "trickle" charge the device. Good idea but probably not worth the time & $ for Apple. Eliminate the port is more likely. Most devices now use BlueTooth anyway.

It already has moving parts. How do you think it vibrates?

Nope... it going to be a "kinetic" iPhone -- where you are the power source!

To keep it going you have to:

"Shake Shake Shake....
Shake Shake Shake....
Shake your bootay!" :p:p;)

>>>Oh man!!! You guys are already ahead of me. That'll teach me for not reading through all the comments first!

If it takes 3 days to charge, I might have a problem!

Solar or kinetic (or both) would be great, because if you get stranded somewhere you don't have to worry about battery.

Not denying that. People will buy it just to buy it. I remember the Iphone being the innovator, the technology leader that others followed. Now they got left behind in hardware but their superior OS and style is keeping them ahead (for now). I want it all and expect it all with Apple. Just seems like they got 'lazy' with the 5. Hopefully these rumors are false and Apple blows us away.

"Seems like they got 'lazy' with the 5"?

They haven't even released the 5 yet - how can you say they got lazy??
