Do we need a doctors prescription for READERS?

Also if cannot do this all before 5 AM its going to insane luck to get one of these.
All you need to know is your number. Like are you +1.75 with Readers? Then order that prescription. Or, call the last place you had an eye exam and get your numbers there.

I wonder if the Apple Store app can directly upload the prescription added into the Health app. I added my current prescription into both my iPhone and iPad, which contains a photo of the piece of paper the prescription is on. Hopefully that's enough and that I don't have to re-enter all that information again when ordering.

No, it is an incredibly versatile standalone computer, and is mid-priced at that. Multi monitor capability is a feature as is Mac virtual connection.
Are you sure about that?
It seems to be disputed…

Mac and Vision Pro: What You (Likely) Can't Do

Create Multiple Virtual Displays
Another likely limitation of the first-generation Vision Pro is that it only supports mirroring your Mac's built-in display. In other words, it won't be possible to extend your Mac's screen or recreate a multiple monitor Mac setup in the mixed reality workspace.

If you have a doctor's prescription for your eyes, take a look at the Add field and add it to your prescription. For instance, if your prescription in one eye is -1.50 and your Add is +2.75, then your READER prescription for that eye is +1.25. Do that calculation for both eyes. You shouldn't need a prescription since you can buy reader glasses from any grocery store or pharmacy, but if you have one, it's easy to figure it out.

I wonder if you can buy both since I normally wear progressive lenses?

Is in-store pick-up mandatory or are they shipping to residential addresses? I vaguely recall a rumor of having to go into an Apple store for fitting.
I don't know the answer to this for certain, but the fact that Apple released a new Apple Store app just to scan your face and enable you to upload a prescription tells us that we don't need to actually go to an Apple Store. Otherwise, why bother with adding those features to the app?

So, you need a recent prescription completed before you begin the pre-order? You won’t be able to complete the checkout process without it, if you need it? You can’t just add the prescription to the order at a later time, or before the item is charged and shipped?

Second hand market will be interesting for these. You'll need a new light seal, potentially prescription Zeiss lenses and a custom head strap to fit your noggin... jeez. Women have an easier time tailoring a secondhand wedding dress.

If they ever ship a normal people iteration in the $999-1500 range, they're gonna need to tweak that bespoke stuff down quite a bit.

Do you need a prescription for the $99 reader inserts? I hope not since you can buy reader at walgreens etc.

I wonder how this face scanning requirement will work for scalpers. I'm sure they'll find a way.
The face scanning is for the light seal, which you’ll obviously eventually be able to buy totally separately.
Also, people seem to keep wanting to forget this, but there is a guest mode, so even at launch it’s not just for one user.
So obviously, multiple people are going to be using it, everyone is going to want their own custom fitted light seal…
Obviously, the actual headset part is going to be the same shape and size for everyone.

I went back and forth on wanting the Vision Pro headset but I think I am going to skip it. It still can’t replace a MacBook, it won’t run Xcode so it’s like an iPad in functionality. It’s a bit expensive for a media viewer or an external MackBook display (XDR excluded). So you can run apps that you would run on an iPad but in the air in front of you. It doesn’t sound powerful enough to run demanding games.

Are you sure about that?
It seems to be disputed…
Yes, 100% sure. Multi monitor is not disputed. You can have numerous scalable and positionable monitors. You can have these alongside an additional virtual mac monitor if needed/desired.

"With Mac Virtual Display enabled, you will be able to able use visionOS apps right alongside your virtual Mac screen. This will allow you to, for example, work on a Final Cut Pro project on an enormous Mac display while also viewing and interacting with separate screens displaying visionOS apps like Photos, Notes, Files, and so on."

Keep in mind that your virtual mac display is scalable as well and can itself display multiple apps simultaneously.

Tons of options!

If you're willing to spend $3500.... what is an extra $100?
It's not the $100 - it's the (apparent, but not sure) fact that I can only order these inserts at the same time as the Vision Pro itself. I don't have a current prescription, so I'd have to go get one before pre-order time. I'd prefer to be able to pre-order now, test it with contacts, and if it's to my liking, order the lenses later. I've done that for my Quest headsets.

I would really like to be able to scan my face and find my size now so I’m not scrambling to do that at pre-order time..
I had the same question, so I reached out to Apple support. For what it's worth, they said the Face Scanning will only take place at the time of order. Doesn't make sense to me, and they could be wrong. Let's hope.

Apple today emailed customers in the U.S. with some tips for pre-ordering the Vision Pro starting next Friday, January 19 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time.

First, Apple says to have an iPhone or iPad with Face ID nearby.

"When you order Apple Vision Pro, you'll need to scan your face with an iPhone or iPad with Face ID," says Apple's email. "This helps us determine the right size Light Seal and head bands, which work together to give you a precise fit."

Second, make sure your Apple Store app is updated, as the latest version released on January 11 supports Vision Pro face scanning.

Third, Apple says customers with vision correction needs will be required to upload a valid, unexpired prescription from a U.S. eye‑care professional after checkout.

"Because Apple Vision Pro is designed to be worn without glasses, we've partnered with ZEISS to create custom optical inserts that accommodate most prescriptions," says Apple, with fine print noting that not all prescriptions are supported. "When you order, we'll ask a few quick questions to find out if you need optical inserts. If you do, you'll upload a valid, unexpired prescription from a U.S. eye‑care professional after checkout."

You can add and store your vision prescription in the Health app on the iPhonewhat lens prescription
Following pre-orders, the Vision Pro will launch in the U.S. on Friday, February 2. Starting at 8 a.m. local time that day, customers are invited to sign up for a demo of the headset at their local Apple Store, with slots to be available through the weekend on a first-come, first-served basis, according to Apple's email.

Vision Pro starts at $3,499 in the U.S. with 256GB of storage. For more details about the headset, read our Vision Pro roundup.

My question to Apple will be: What precise distance should the Rx lens prescription be for? Currently reading, computer and distance are all different scripts for me. Presumably AVP will optimize at yet a different distance.

Interesting.
So MacRumours are wrong?
Simply read what they wrote, "With Mac Virtual Display enabled, you will be able to able use visionOS apps right alongside your virtual Mac screen. This will allow you to, for example, work on a Final Cut Pro project on an enormous Mac display while also viewing and interacting with separate screens displaying visionOS apps like Photos, Notes, Files, and so on."

They are absolutely right. Multiple monitors are 100% a feature.
