Yet they managed to run MacOS on the Mini Developer Kit with the A12Z
That must have been quite a magical machine.

Either that or iPadOS is so badly optimised that you need the hardware to make up for all its faults.

This shouldn’t need explanation. It is obvious how much more resources the M1 iPads have available to them and that the older models would be resource starved and not just on RAM. Apple need to be able to put out new features without having to wait for devices that can’t support those features to go obsolete.

Given that my very first PC with Windows 3.1 did support resizable windows almost 30 years ago (a feature even older Macs also supported even long before that date), this statement that 2020 iPad Pros do not have enough memory to support such a desktop does not speak highly about the efficient use of modern hardware.
The older iPad Pro only have just enough RAM to run a very few things at once. Your computer always got more and more RAM to support multiple applications. It isn’t magic.

Maybe, but why try to make new features work with old hardware that is approaching end of support?

I get it, nice for the customer, but as far as apple is concerned, it is adding complexity to the codebase for hardware that won't be viable for many more years.

And un-necessary complexity in software is a major source of bugs.
That’s not it at all. At one point apple chose to support their products for a reasonable amount of time, thus making their customers more likely to buy apple products again.

It’s not (only) about old machines. The latest and greatest iPad Mini 6 isn’t supported. Apple either intentionally gimped this product knowing full well it wouldn’t support short term software updates, or they are full of **** about needing M1 and they are up selling.

Either way, it’s total bull crap for Mini 6 owners. Previous Pro owners too, but at least that is on a 4 year old chip and is no longer for sale. Nothing about the Mini is older than the M1 Pro.

we stick to mini . if mini got m1 next year then we think again. for now ehmm aa

the crap is stages itself , over complicated . Just give full view external monitor without multi tasking !

Well of course. The good thing is this means moving forward with every new release that even lower end iPads that get hand-me-down chips, the iPad experience is only going to get better and better with close to feature parity to full blown Macs.

One of iPadOS 16's key new features is Stage Manager, which allows users to resize apps into overlapping windows for an improved multitasking experience. Stage Manager also fully supports an external display, allowing users to work with up to four apps on the iPad and up to four apps on the external display simultaneously.

To the disappointment of some users, Stage Manager is limited to iPad models with an M1 chip, including the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air. In a statement shared with Rene Ritchie, Apple explained its rationale for this limitation by asserting that the Stage Manager experience "requires large internal memory, incredibly fast storage, and flexible external display I/O, all of which are delivered by iPads with the M1 chip."

Apple's full statement, as shared by Ritchie:For example, the M1 iPad Pro is available with up to 16GB of RAM, compared to 6GB in the previous-generation iPad Pro. Apple also said the M1 iPad Pro has 2x faster storage than the previous-generation model.

While the Stage Manager feature is limited to iPad models with an M1 chip, iPadOS 16 as a whole is compatible with all iPad Pro models, the third-generation iPad Air and newer, the fifth-generation iPad and newer, and the fifth-generation iPad mini and newer. The update is currently in beta for developers, with Apple planning to release a public beta in July. iPadOS 16 should be released to all users around September.

IMO this whole argument is disingenuous. macOS managed to have full free form window support on an A12Z in the developer kit.

I’m sorry but this is total ********. My 2020 12.9“ iPad is so under utilised it’s ridiculous.

It’s lose/lose — everyone will just comment they are “lying” as if they know the intricacies of their inner workings, engineering pipeline, or business track. Whether we like it or not, there’s a reason they are a multi-trillion dollar company and it’s not listening to Redditors or MacRumors commentators.
I suspect they really do listen to Redditors and/or MacRumors commentators. Wouldn't be at all surprised to find they have a "social" media monitoring unit at least looking and likely producing statistics of what is posted.

What they then do with that information is another matter. And lack of comments might be at least as important as large numbers.

There are changes which just happen and almost no-one ever mentions. (Possibly the "must find every tiny difference" brigade of commentators reference them - but real-world user hardly at all.)

Ok Stage Manager doesn’t work due to lack of RAM I get that, although I still think its BS and a way of forcing upgrades.
I don't know who would be stupid enough "upgrading" for just this feature. An iPad is something you upgrade every 5 years or so. Anyone with a 2018/2020 iPad Pro being conned into an upgrade because of this deserves to keep wasting their money quite frankly.

This statement would be more believable if Apple simply showed us how bad it would be running it on the A12X/Z (eg super choppy animation, apps crashing due to low RAM, etc). Simply demo it and say “see, this is why we require the M1.” Done. People would be more than willing to accept and even upgrade. Be transparent.

But no, Apple won’t do that, because they probably know it can be worked out if they wanted to. Put a limit on how many apps retained, and/or cut down some of the eye candy, or just have it not support external monitor in the older iPads.

It would be hilarious if somebody managed to jailbreak the older iPads and then enable the feature, and then it worked fine.
Lol. Apple is not going to demo anything to convince anyone. The tiny minority of users unwilling to accept it, can buy a new iPad or get another brand.

My old MacBook had 512 MB and it was able to run iTunes, AOL, MSN and AIM simultaneously just fine. Either that is BS or Apple lost the plot when it comes to how the iPadOS architecture is built
