Okay, I understand the notch on the iPhone because of the Face ID sensor. However, even though the MacBook doesn't have a Face ID sensor, I definitely don't understand why it's such a big notch. On a MacBook, a notch like this would be enough.

Here is the camera model from a MacBook Pro. There is more than just a camera in there. There are two other sensors and some mounting hardware. Does the size really matter in this case.

Ah, ninja’d by @darngooddesign

Apple isn’t just iterating away from notch to notch-lessness to address current hardware limitations.

It is concurrently introducing us to a future of fully free-floating, multi-dimensional, fully customizable Dynamic Islands of varying shapes, colors and sizes that pop-up and disappear all over the screen based on application need and function.

Dynamic Island was chosen as a design feature because of its key role in the future of iOS. Once everything goes under glass, it will reach its full potential and glory. We are watching evolution of software under the guise of addressing hardware limitations.
One of my issues with DI is that everything you described here can be done with a simple rectangular display. Punching a hole in the middle of the display is not required to do any of it, or to evolve the software in any way. All the fully customizable islands of varying shapes you mentioned could happen today if it were not for the fact they need to mask a hole they decided to physically punch in the screen.

If the idea is to eventually do away with the physical cutout (as technology allows) as you say, the scheme looks even less intelligent or forward-looking on Apple’s part. Having to work around an unnecessary hardware decision (hole in screen) is not “evolution” of the software IMHO.

And for what? To do away with all bezels? To have an edge2edge display? If Apple had instead decided to keep a short bezel on top, how many here would have gone to an Android phone because of it? I know the answer to that question can’t possibly be zero, but it’s probably pretty close to that. Probably about as many as went to Android when Apple decided to punch a hole in the screen.

Thanks for reminding me - gave it a try when migrating to the MBP back in 2021 but had some issues, mainly with JetBrains and Docker causing Bartender to crash. I see version 5 is out and will give it a try.
Let's say those two still have an issue with Bartender, you can probably keep them in the Menu bar and put the rest on the floating window.

Personally glad they decided against the permanent black bar. Never found the notch a particular issue right back to iPhone X, and I like having that little bit of extra screen realestate.

The island makes zero sense to me. Why didn't they just keep it as a notch? Video gets cut off so much more with the island than the notch. You could also make a notch a full taskbar via software. I don't know, the island just seems like such an aesthetically idiotic decision.
I’ve been saying it since the moment they announced it.

It’s the Touch Bar and butterfly keyboard of the iPhone.

It’s the reason why I’ll buy a folding Samsung if the 16 comes out with a l Dynamic Island l …. And I’ve had an iPhone since the 3G.

When they announce the 16 and it has a Dynamic Island I’m going folding oled android.

No thanks Tim. You keep your horrid design choices.

Love Dynamic Island and hope it stays.

You literally just said that. We get it. You’re getting an android lol at this point you might as well go ahead and get the Samsung. It’s not leaving iPhones anytime soon

Top right purple was how I envisioned Apple’s final product after seeing the original construction of the screen panel.

If Apple were smart enough they could just give users all the options available and keep them in settings. Let us choose what the island does and how it should look instead of locking all settings in pre-installed functions.

But that makes the phone look ugly because it makes the screen look like bezel, so makes the bezel look much bigger than it is.

IMO the change from the notch to Dynamic Island was pointless. DI intrudes more into the screen than the notch and is a backward step. As for the fancy DI animations and uses, they could have just as easily achieved that by expanding the notch via software in the same way.

I hate it, it gets in my way when I’m viewing a video or some photos I took with iPhone 14 great lenses.
In landscape mode, it’s visible while watching a video, that’s poor design placement.

This is how apple should have done it: The notch moved to the bottom, swiping over it brings you home/to the app switcher, you open controlcenter from bottom right and notifications from bottom left.

Up top there is space for a great ‘menubar’ with all info visible and edge to edge screen when looking at images and text.
When taking a selfie all you do is turn around your phone and the selfiecam opens automatically.
Also one handed use will be more comfortable because all the controls on the bottom you want to reach with yout thumb are a little higher up above the notch and the cramp will be gone.
