Hope this story is false.

The moment they go ahead with this, there will be mayhem.

Its a pantent application so there is very little chance its false. However, this might be one of those patents that will never be used... What worries me is the fact that Apple sees something like this as worthy of a patent.

No No No!

Don't even think about bringing this.

I will switch to Linux so fast that it will make Apple's head spin!

Apple patented this so that Microsoft would get sued if they integrated it.

At least I hope that's the case.

I would accept ad supported free internet 3G or higher. If that is integrated into OS X. I'm cool with that. Ad supported hardware wouldn't work. Too easy to erase, repartition, install other OS, etc..

Poo

291 negatives :D

what a stinky idea

unless they are gonna give me a free MacPro then I guess I could cope with a few ads :D:D

If Apple did this to my computer I would go back to custom built Windows PC's. I would never put up with having to watch adds to use my computer.

What is all the negativity about?

Apple would never put this in their default OS.

This will clearly be an opt-in system that will help people get sponsorship for certain things.

It will be available to those who want it, but it will not be forced upon those who don't.

I'd love to see you try paying for all the content you get on television without ads. And no, paying for cable/satellite does not necessarily pay for the content itself. Yeah, that show is "free" because they show those ads. Without them, you'd be paying at least a dollar for every show you watch.

It won't be acted on... No chance.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again - Apple (like many other companies) patent hundreds of random ideas that are never implemented. That is, they don't implement the ideas in most of their patents. If you spent five minutes looking at patents, you'd see that 'worthy of a patent' really doesn't mean much at all...

Free 3G?

Could be for the tablet to provide free 3G connectivity. That would actually be kind of great.

I would love this OS, if they gave me a brand new $20,000 car with it.

Anything less and I'll never buy another Apple OS.

Whatever mind capable of thinking of such ideas should get fired. Frankly, I think that was the purpose of the whole thing, discovering rotten minds. I would happily turn to windows asap with **** like this. It's said that cocaine is one hell of a drug. Now, I am positive that it is. DAMN! the mere idea made me cringe, let alone implementing it.

Like glossy screens? Apple's never had a reputation for giving consumers broad choices.

I think it's unlikely to be implemented any time soon; the backlash would be far too negative. Even if they did release it, people would just take the free OS/computer and the advertising system would be cracked within weeks. Woohoo! Free stuff!

I like the idea someone had on page 1, that Apple patented this to stop anyone else doing it. If only..

People.....RELAX!

Apple is not going to put ads in OS X if you spend $1,699 for that new iMac, or even $599 for the new Mini.

This is clearly a patent to explore ads to supplement something mobile related or tablet.

Last time I checked, Apple has less than 9% market share in the USA (less than 4% worldwide), no way do they put ads in their main consumer OS. That's no way to win customers.

So relax with the "I'm going to Windows or Linux" comments.

I think you're all misunderstanding this.

Remember, Apple is about the User Experience. Given that Apple understands its customers better than customers understand even themselves, they won't do anything to impact the User Experience negatively to such a degree.

Those #1 in Customer Satisfaction ratings don't just happen out of thin air. It's safe to assume Apple understands this and hasn't suddenly gone mad.

Again, it helps to think outside the MR bubble now and then.

Apple aren't adverse to a l'il spamming of their own in their OS.

Remember when they added the QuickTime Pro upgrade movie? Every time you opened the QuickTime player the movie would pop up asking you to upgrade. It also put an icon on your desktop which you couldn't delete without it returning.

Or try browsing the iTMS without logging in. It'll regularly ask you to create an account/log in as you listen to previews.

(I could be very cynical, and mention that since DRM-free iTunes songs came out, I keep getting "Authorise this Mac" errors every time I try to play my DRM'ed songs on my (authorised!) Mac. Funny, I never got any such errors, until there was a paid upgrade path to go DRM-free.. )

I'm not equating these to an ad-supported OS. But Apple isn't all about the user experience; they're also trying to sell stuff and if they need to annoy the user in order to do so, they obviously have no qualms about it.

I wouldn't buy such a system/OS. I wouldn't pirate it. I wouldn't support it. I would laugh at it.

Davie; I want that report NOW!
Uh, I can't; I'm watching an add.
You're watching porn at work again?!

There is a time when software patents *could* be for the good...

If Apple patents the idea, then no one else can do it unless they pay Apple for the rights. If Apple makes the rights so expensive then no one will do something so ridiculous. I hope...

I remember getting paperback books in the seventies and early eighties with advertisements in them. That would be the first thing that I'd tear out and either toss it or use it for a bookmark. It stopped relatively soon after it started. We are like Brave New World, THX 1138 and 1984 all rolled into one...

'Be happy and buy buy buy!'

NO.
Not gonna let it happen.
I'll go back to Windows before I use a Mac with ads.
YUCK!
I don't care if it's free. I'll pay to NOT have the damn ads.

No way Jose

I would NEVER use an OS supported by ads. DUMBEST IDEA EVER! I will make my current Mac run forever and never upgrade if this were to happen.
Gosh or switch to Linux? Can't believe I'd say that!

If this happens rest assured I will never upgrade my OS and if it begins to hinder what I need to do I'll go back to windows. That's just the simple truth. I can remove bloatware but WTF is Apple thinking with the idea of placing ads in an OS?

This will never pass.
