My first thought was something like hulu or apple tv where this applied to media content.

In the OS no.

If there were a free version of OSX I don't see a problem with it. Although I wouldn't use it.

i love the idea. If steve jobs came up with it..sign me up..

but for real...i know a ton of people that wouldnt mind getting some ads built into their OS if it meant they get 15-25 bucks a month back. We all on macrumors tend to be pretty privileged and dont think twice about paying bills like internet or new tech instruments.

Interesting idea or not, I'd never go down this route. I'm already using adblockers, I record TV so I can skip through adverts (most of the time they break up good shows) and I arrive late at the cinema as to avoid them there too. Can't stand adverts. I'll make up my own mind about products thank you very much!
Even hacked Live Messenger to remove the adverts from that.

It's my personal computer. I don't want you selling your shizz here.

While this looks tacky, I'd like to give Apple the benefit of the doubt. Lots of companies file a ton of non-sensical patents.

Without any context we cannot know the real-world application of this, if this thing ever gets into the wild in the first place.

Another way for Arn/MR to make $ on MacRumors with 'negative' article with lots of whiners and complainers :)

BTW - I don't mind having ads on iTunes or MobileMe. Nothing else. I wouldn't switch to Windows or Ubuntu if this happen.

no no no, a thousand times no. I hate the whole "ad-supported" model. I'm even sick of google and their "we'll give you everything free... but mine all your data and target you with ads." I'm to the point where I'd rather just pay than be bombarded with ads all the time.

I wouldl go back to using Windows 95 before I'd accept that in an OS.

This is probably just a CYA filing for something else. There's no way Apple would pull something like this.

We'd hack it out os the OS anyway.

macrumors is ad-supported, and i don't find their ads bad at all. When I was shopping for an iphone, the links to third-party case-makers really helped in my decision.

Perfect example of ads being mutually beneficial. I get to use this website for free, they get money, I get USEFUL information that I want.

In my mind it makes more sense for an application (like MS Office) where you might not use it enough to justify the spend, but might use it intermittently and not mind seeing an ad to use it for 30 minutes.

I agree, if a company offered a free or very cheap version of an expensive program which I would like to own but don't have a huge need for, i.e. Adobe Creative Suite, I would definitely buy it.

I don't see it making much sense for an OS, unless it's used to help reduce the cost of netbook type computers.

It doesn't necessarily say it is used to sponsor the OS itself, per se, but merely that it is incorporated into the OS to sponsor goods or services.

I gues one of my first thoughts was for the iPhone or iTablet type of machine.

Free to users who accept ads....I like the idea of a tablet but not at the ApplePrice. an iTablet free with ads does sound good to me.

Regular OS....NOPE. I especially do not want a pop-up when designing something, I hate to be interrupted when pathing something out.

I'd love to see you try paying for all the content you get on television without ads. And no, paying for cable/satellite does not necessarily pay for the content itself. Yeah, that show is "free" because they show those ads. Without them, you'd be paying at least a dollar for every show you watch.

TV licence in the UK.

No. Just no. I would erase Mac OS X and install Windows. I would never buy a Mac again. And my family has always used macs.
